June 9, 2006 Amy, I LOVE this post. It embodies the best part of being in a support group, helping patients find ways to live a more comfortable life and manage their condition. Bravo!!! Well done! Love it! Love it! Love it! - Jill O.

Hi guys! I wanted to start this thread for everyone to share their helpful hints on things they do to make life in general or life with IC easier. Please add your tips to this thread. It can be anything, from cooking with a crock pot, to helpful cleaning tips, anything at all, except health related things (like using the heating pad or other things, as the health related IC things are on other threads elsewhere on the boards.

I'll start. These are some of mine:

1) Just a helpful hint for everyone who was taught to "hover" over public toilets to urinate instead of sitting them. Get some of those cleaning/disinfecting wipes and some disposable latex gloves and keep some in your purse when you leave the house. That way, you can clean the seat so you can sit without worry, and then just toss your gloves and used wipes.

2) Buy a crockpot and use it! You can throw in meats and vegtables in the morning, and come home to a home cooked dinner. It is also great for those who dont work, because if your meds make you drowsy, you dont have to worry about falling asleep with the stove turned on.

3) Try to double or triple recipes when you cook, and freeze the extra meals. Then, on days you dont feel well enough to cook dinner, you have already have one on hand. It is also nice to have something cooked in case you have to take a meal to a friend who is ill, or if someone dies and you need to take food to the family.

4) Make use of the public library. Try to go weekly and check out lots of movies for each family member. Our library lets us check out 10 movies or dvds per person and we are allowed to keep them for 2 weeks. It is great to have these on hand for the kids, in case you feel bad and need some peace and quiet. You can surprise the kids with your secret stash of videos, and you are pretty well guarenteed a few hours of peace and quiet. All for free!

5) Go get a few bottles of "The Works" bathroom cleaner from the dollar store. Ours sells it for $1 a bottle. Squirt down the shower enclosure and bathtub at bedtime. Let the cleaner do the work while you sleep. Then, tell whoever showers first, to rinse it off before they get in. Also, put the toilet cleaner in at bedtime to let it work while you sleep. When you get up, the bathroom will be clean!

6) Go buy an extra shower curtain rod. Layer it behind the other shower curtain rod. Assign a differant colors of towels to each member of the family. Then, after showers or baths, tell each person to hang their towels on that shower curtain rod. It keeps the used towels out of site to dry, and cuts down on doing laundry, since the towels can be reused.

7) If you enjoy reading magazines, this tip is for you! Go to a few local beauty shops and ask if you can have their old mags at the end of the month, when they throw them away. I have 3 shops that save theirs for me. I get Redbook, Cosmo, Glamour, People, Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Womans Day, Readers Digest, Parenting, and many more every month, all for free this way. So, I always have mags on hand for days that I dont feel well and just want to lay around. Plus, I always have reading material for the bathroom, for free! Then when I finish reading them, I take them to ladies in our community that are homebound. (Some are on bed rest due to high risk pregnancies, others are sick with cancer or other things, and others are just old.) They always love them, and if I have an extra meal in the freezer that I have made ahead, I take them one of those occasionly too. It costs me next to nothing to do, and they are so appreciative.

8) When you are in the hosptial and someone sends you fresh cut flowers, wouldnt it be nice to keep them forever? Well, now you can! All you do, is go to Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot (most any store with a garden center), and get something called Root Growth Hormone Stimulator. Then, take the flowers that you want to grow, (roses and carnations do well!), and dip the bottom of the stem in the root growth hormone stimulator and then put it in sterilized potting soil. (You can buy this in the garden center too.) If you start a single rose in the spring, it will be the size of a rose bush, ready to plant by fall. I did this with the flowers in my wedding bouquet, and every other occasion that I am given flowers. We now have flowers, and rose bushes all over our property, just from flowers that were given to me!

9) The next time you paint a room, go buy a bottle of shoe polish with a sponge tip applicator. Then empty out the polish and wash the bottle well. Then fill the bottle with the same paint that you painted the walls. Now, you have a convient touch up bottle on hand for touching up scratches or marks on the walls.

10) Put fabric softner sheets between the blanket and sheets on the bed in a hide-away bed or on the bed in the guest bedroom. It will keep the sheets smelling fresh until you have company again.

11) Want a tv in the bathroom (since you spend so much time there), but dont think you have room? Get a wall mounted tv holder from Lowes like the hospitals have. No more missing the end of a movie you have watched the whole way thru, just b/c of another restroom visit!

12) For dusty silk plants or flowers, put them in the tub, and spray with a hand held shower. It rinses the dirt and dust right off! Then, leave them in tub to drip dry.

13) Do you have alot of dusty knick knacks? Or dusty light fixtures? Put them in the dishwasher. (Just make sure they are dishwasher safe!) It will clean them right up and make them shine!

14) Place a layer of newspapers or paper towels in the bottoms of your vegtable bins in the refrigerator. If something ruins, rots, or leaks, then you wont have that slimy mess!

15) If you have long hair or shoulder length or longer hair with layers and want wavy or curly hair, just wad up damp hair and secure with a terry cloth, pony tail holder and sleep on it. You will awaken to hair that looks like it has been hot rolled.

16) If you dont have chemical sensitivites, self tanner can be your best friend. With the right product, (I like Neutrogena), you wont even need foundation. It will even out skin tones and give you a healthy looking glow!

17) For a fresh smelling house, buy one of those scented oil refills for plug in air fresheners. Just take a toothpick, or pointed object and push the wick down into the bottle. Then drizzle a few drops of the oil on your vaccum cleaner bag. The whole house will smell clean and fresh for days!

18) Speaking of vaccuming, while you have it out, vaccum ALL the floors, even the kitchen and bathroom floors. Why go to the effort of sweeping and dragging out the dustpan, when the vaccum will do the same thing, only better.

19) Does your gift wrapping supplies have a designated home? If not, go to Goodwill and keep an eye out for hanging garment bags. You can usually find them there for a dollar or two. Place tape, scissors, ribbons and bows in the zippered compartments, and hang the wrapping paper in the following manner: Take the leg off of an old pair of pantyhose and slide the gift wrap into the leg. Tie a knot in the top, and slip a coat hanger into the knot. When you need gift wrap, it wont be wrinkled! All you do to use it is, cut the bottom off. Because the pantyhose stretch, you can tie it again when you finish. It will keep stretching almost indefinately!

20) To limit dust in the house, get filters to go between the air conditoning vent ducts and the vent covers. They arent noticable, but really cut WAY down on the dust in the house. When I did this, I went from having to dust twice a week to only having to dust every 8 days! Also, you can put a fabric softner sheet on top of the filter to give the air a soft, clean scent.

21) Suck up the embarrassment, and use the motorized chairs at the grocery store and Walmart. This is what they are there for...people like you! It will help you to conserve your limited energy for something else later in the day.

22) When you are sick or post surgical, have your husband put a cooler beside your bed stocked with drinks, a sandwich and snacks. You are already going to be up alot going to the bathroom, so this helps you to keep from having to get up any more than necessary, while your body is healing.

23) An ironing board makes a great bedside table in a pinch, while you are sick. It is height adjustable, and can hold your meds, snacks, a drink, pitcher of water, and reading materials.

24) If you can afford Tivo, it is awesome for the IC patient. Before I got mine, I was forever missing the crucial parts of movies or tv programs when I had to go to the restroom multiple times.

25) If your house is really messy and you cant manage to get everything done, just invite your mother over, and she will insist that it be cleaned. Then, act completely incompetant on the first task she assigns you, and she will insist that you let her do everything else! :) LOL!!

Hi Amy, what a great list & great idea to post it! You could write for Family Circle or Women's Day!!

A few things I do...
1. Buy double preservative free breads & rolls & freeze half right away.
2. Keep "flare food" available in freezer & pantry (chicken breasts, veggies, rice).
3. Keep "earthquake kits" with safe food (canned chicken, Triscuits, pear pear bars from ICN store) @ home, car, work - in case of natural disaster or human error (forgetting my lunch at home, etc.).
4. Netflix subscription - always have a movie at home without having to wait in line at video store
5. Buy boxes of greeting cards at Michael's (craft store) - to always have some on hand. The boxes are pretty too.
6. Keep a shelf with any-time gifts, so that if a b-day or bridal shower sneaks up on me I have something handy without a trip to the mall. This way I also get things on sale. Gift bags & tissue on hand also. (Also buy these on sale & keep around for when needed).
7. Learned to say "I'll get back to you on that. Need to check my calendar" before committing to too many things. Waiting overnight on decisions means I more thoughtfully decide what really fits the schedule.

Amy - what a great post!! The rod for the towels in the bathroom was ingenious! You've given me lots of great ideas to simplify things around here. (My favorite was the last one, tho! I know from experience that works every time!)

These are some excellent tips!

Number one is especially good since there is nothing more ignorant than urinating all over a public toilet because you refused to sit on it. Every time I see a toilet seat wet with someones pee I cringe.
If you don't want your butt cheeks touching the seat than put some toilet paper over it, or something, sheesh

Amy, what a great post! You have such a good heart for thinking of ways to help others! And what great ideas you came up with! I agree with everyone, this post absolutely 100% deserves the President's award! :) And a cyber-hug from all of us, too!

I feel so dumb, I can't think of anything to add...I just wanted to say, though, that when you are in a flare, you are sick - so please be kind to yourself. Treat yourself like a beloved friend. No one ever died from a dusty house, that I know of. So the housework can wait. Or maybe even the housework doesn't have to be as perfect as it might be. You have a terrible illness, and you may not always be able to meet the standards that you once set for yourself, back when you were healthy. So don't beat yourself up. Accept that you may have limitations now, and be kind and gentle to yourself, and give yourself credit for just surviving the day, and for doing the best that you can.

Blessings,
Lori

This is slightly off topic, but(t) do you know what the best thing about California is? Evidently, it's law that they have to have toilet seat covers there, because I don't think I've ever been in a public bathroom there that didn't have them. Yes! That and the no-smoking law is just about enough to get me to move there. Nah. But tempting.

Amy (Mrs. B) :bunny:

P.S.: Great post, Amy!

Those are particularly good features of California life, but the cost of buying a home & traffic kinda outweigh them, says a longtime resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, who rents.

Yeah, I'm sitting here in my 2,000 square foot home that we bought for $140,000. Our inlaws say our home is worth at least $500,000 in California. So I could buy a lifetime supply of my own toilet seat covers and still be WAY ahead. Guess I'll stay here for now.

Amy (Mrs. B) :bunny:

P.S. Sorry off topic! Here's my hint: Even if it's out of character, be an active participant in your care. Do your own research. Don't be afraid to question what your doctor says. It's your right as a patient! And if he/she can't handle it, find another doctor.

Hi Amy, as always a GREAT POST! Your ideas are ingenious! Kadi your ideas are great as well, and Lori that is a different spin on it all, but JUST as important.

It took me along time to be able to not completely "stress" if my house was out of order, I was a neatfreak to a fault. I got over that with a very good friend who was my roommate...she was always nagging (in a good way) that the dishes, the laundry, the cleaning, the yardwork could all wait!! It sure wasn't gonna go anywhere if I took a much needed break from it all!

GREAT, GREAT IDEAS LADIES!!! :)

Great Post-- I have to agree, no one ever died of a dirty house (I don't know who said it) but I hardly have time to clean my anymore- let alone the energy). I HAVE to clean it tomorrow as family/company is coming Friday for my son's graduation.
As to the toilet seat covers, I keep a few extras with me (take them from the office, but -- I have to agree, if you are going to stand at the the toilet, and make a mess, at least clean it up. I see this even at work when there are plenty of seat covers!!)

Those are great tips, Amy! :D

I actually DO use a few of those and am intriqued (and will probably adopt) some of them.......especially the shoe polish/paint one!! I have a very colorful house that is frequently in need of touch ups.

Thanks for taking the time to post that. You rock!

I loved all the tips!! The shoepolish one is great, those new rubbermaid paint toucher-uppers (pretty sure thats not the real product name)are expensive. so that is a great idea. Loved the bathroom cleaner tips too.
My tips
Get over the guilt and have kids do more around the house, make sure hey understand how to do the chore given and then dont criticize if its not done ecaxtly like you would do it (guilty here )

Big calendar to keep track of family happenings (especially useful if you are on sedating meds)

Dont buy paperback books at regular store go to Goodwill or Salvation Army and get them for 25cents and them trade them in at a used bookstore after reading!!

When you are having an ok day, take the time to stock up at the dollar store for all the things your family hates to run out of....toliet paper, papertowels. feminine hygeine products, school supplies cleaning supplies etc.

Keep a list on fridge for family to add what is needed at store *that way even husbands can figure out what is needed)

Keep a notebook at bedside to wrte letters, journal in, keep a voiding diary etc

Copy all your Drs phone numbers and adresses and what you see them for and keep a copy in your wallet and give one to your husband or parent or trusted friend

Keep a current list of meds you are on in your wallet BD AS ABOVE GIVE COPY TO OTHERS.

My best advice......get an Advanced Medical Directive/<edical Power of Attorney and fill it out, they come small enough to carry in your purse and it could save your life. (I am a living testament to that)

Have a mantra for really bad days....I use "I am strong and I can control this"
along with Lamaze breathing it has got me thru some awful days.

These are great tips!!! I do several of them already, but learned a lot. My mantra for those bad days (and this is one of them) is "and this too shall pass . . . "

You can also (in some areas) download books. Check with your local library and see if they have the online programs. I'm upgrading my computer so I can do this for my mom. She can't see well enough to read at present and the ones I've found on line are very expensive.

Sonja, Roma tomatoes are lower in acid than regular tomatoes. Also, I've read somewhere that home-grown tomatoes have less acid than those sold in stores.:)

So Happy this thread got kicked oped again!!!Thanks.
I have added some tips now that school is back in and things around my house can be hectic at times. Plus a couple others that , well, just help out.

Arrange for carpooling aroung your meds schedule(this may seem obviuos, but how many of us have HAD to run and pick up a kid while on pain meds?)
If you know afternoons you are ok for driving offer to drive then, alot of your working friends will love you for it.

Buy a seat cushion from the ICN shop for the days you feel ok to go watch your kids plays sports (the bleachers area killer, but the cushion is GREAT!!)

Make a few playlists, one for a good day when you are cleaning, one for a bad flare day when you need solace, one for you to share w/ kids, my son and daughter and I have had many a bonding moment started by listening to music (plus it keeps you up on what they are listening to w/o seeming judgmental!!!)

Since it is hard to reach the low shelves for many of us, I have put my pots and pans in my pantry shelves at eye level and only light things like Tupperware down low so it doesnt hurt to get them out.

Teach kids to cook, they will really find alot of satisfaction in being able to to it and they can make a healthy meal when you cant do it.

Put a dry erase board on kids doors to leave notes about things that need to be done and always a little message about how much you love them and are proud of them (my son is a senior, but he still looks forward to seeing what is on his board)...anything to keep the communication going.

Along that line...We have a monthly family pajama party on moms bed, kids make popcorn and snacks, we rent movies, get magazines, play board games. My kids and my husband and I love it, it is our favorite night of the month.

Make a "complaint box"..anything goes.

I know all of these suggestiond include involving children, but I strongly feel that the more that our kids learn about our illness and its limitations, they will understand it is not a choice we are making to "back off " from being as involved as we might of been before. Plus we are giving them the gift of empathy, which is sadly lacking in many youths.
Also helping with my care and the household is prepareing them for when they are out on their own, and my daughter has done alot of bandage changing, med scheduling, meal planning, cath care etc...so much so she wants to get into the medical field, she says she has a head start.
Don't underestimate your children, or feel guilty (easier said than done , I know). Give them the opportunity to step up.
Lots of love to all
Sonja

Sonja, Thanks for posting those! They are really great! They are the kind of things that make me think, "Now why hadnt I thought of that by now!!" (The one about the tupperware needs to be on the bottom and pots and pans at eye level, really got me kicking myself that I hadnt thought of this one yet!)

I also loved the dry erase board on the bedroom doors! That one was another piece of genius!

They were all great! The only one I dont see myself implementing very soon would be the complaint box!! :smile tee I get enough of those without having to solicit them!! :smile tee But, hey! I am impressed that YOU guys are able to have it up there!!

Thanks for the great suggestions! Hugs, Amy

Most people probobly do this one already, but for those that dont.....try keeping trash bags at the bottom of the trash can.

Also, keep an empty tissue box to store plastic bags.

For those who have a whirlpool tub, clean it by filling the tub with hot water and adding 1 cup dishwasher detergent and 1 cup bleach. Then, turn on whirlpool jets and run for at least 20 minutes. This will clean and disinfect the tub.

If, (like me), you often must use the restroom out of necessity while on the phone, (because the person you are talking to never pauses to takes a breath long enough for you to tell them to hold on a sec), you can use the restroom privately by simply pressing the mute button on your phone. (This enables you to hear them, but they can't hear you).

Consider planting a few favorite veggies in the Topsy Turvy (or it's knockoff's, like those at Walmart, etc.) I like the low acid tomatoes. They dont bother my IC. (Though not all ICers can eat them, but I have been lucky with them.) If you dont have the time, space, or energy to grow a conventional garden, this is a great invention for you! (There isnt even any weeding! :) Gotta love that!)

Oh! I almost forgot! There is now a product on the market that will sweep and/or vaccum for you! It is called Roomba. You just turn it on and let it loose and your days of sweeping and vaccuming are over! What an invention!

Now, they are are getting ready to market Scooba, (if they havent already begun to sell it.) It will wash and dry your floors too! So, with this product, we dont even have to do that chore! (Not sure how much these cost, though I am sure they will be expensive! But, for those who can afford them, they sound like a luxery that will be worth the money, IMHO!
