I thought I should mention this one since it happened to me right before I was diagnosed with IC.
When I went to my second Uro - before he scheduled me for my cysto/hydro, he did a swab test for Ureaplasma. OBGYN's do not test for this, I was told. I tested positive for this and was told that it is transmited through sex but not considered an STD (I know, I was confused too).
He wanted to test for this mainly b/c many women have this infection and do not know it, since only some have symptoms. The symptoms are similar to IC, and often when you treat the Ureaplasma, symptoms go away!
I do have IC, but perhaps this infection triggered it? hmmm
My fiance and I had to take 2 weeks of antibiotics (can't remember which ones, but they were strong!) Once the antibiotics were finished, I went back for a swab and was told it is gone. Just a thought for those of you out there that are experiencing frequency and urgency - this may be one of your contributors!

Thank you so much for this - I have never been tested for ureaplasma. I will have to bring this up at my next visit with the doctor!

I saw several urologists who never tested me for ureaplasma urealyticum. Finally I saw a chronic fatigue doc who tested me for it and I was positive. I took antibiotics for it and it's gone but my symptoms have persisted. So now I am investigating Lyme disease for which I also had a positive test.

My symptoms have persisted as well. In fact, I expereinced a flare shortly after finishing the antibiotics. Very confused why OBGYN's do not test for this. One reason I was told was becasue so many women have it that if they tested everyone, there would be a lot of women testing positive that show no symptoms. However, I read on the internet that a Ureaplasma infection could relate to infertility! Am glad I know I treated it and that it's gone...but that just irks me that they would not test every woman - at least once every few years like an HPV swab.

I was explained the same thing - that so many women have it but so few of them have symptoms. What confuses me is why the urologists I saw who KNEW I had symptoms - why did they not test me for it??

The medical profession is a bit crazy:dizzy: :dizzy: :dizzy:

I agree! It also seems with IC that there is no clear line of yes you definetely have it or you don't. Nothing is black and white. NOthing makes sense - especially why they wouldn't test for Ureaplasma - it takes a second - in fact when I went back to retest - they had me go in the bathroom and swab myself!!:loco:
