Hi, I have good friend who has a phd in nutrition, he's also an exercise physiologist, former 2x Mr. Universe, owns his own gyms, and is the picture of health and fitness, only mentioning this because this guy knows a LOT about how to get healthy, stay healthy and how out bodies are supposed to operate..
Most of his advice is hard work and common sense like Jack Lalane (don't eat the twinkie, lol)

When I told him I had IC, and what else was going on, wacko heart rate and increased blood pressure etc, he said suspected my body was in an acidic state and I needed to get it neutralized, asap ..So, he me got some of the same medical grade urine ph testing strips used at Dr's offices and hospitals, and I know it's a crude measurement, but my first strip showed me to be in what the chart on the box showed very pale green "dangerously acidic" state! :dizzy: He reccommended a supplement to buffer my ph and help regulate it, he said it will help get my minerals back in balance. I've been using it a few days, and I think it's helping because today it was still on the acidic side, but it was up a full point to a light green, as opposed the pale yellow green it was 3 days ago..it has gotten a little closer up on the scale each day to the desired state of 7.5

Has there been any discussion as to whether the ph of urine is affecting IC or you think this might be a coincidence? Could acidic urine be causing damage to the bladder lining? Just a curious cat! :cat:

Healthy urine is slightly acidic. Alkaline urine is a breeding heaven for bacteria; my reference books say that alkaline urine almost always indicates there is infection present.

My suggestion would be to talk with your physician about the program you are on.

Are you checking your urine when you first get up in the a.m.? I have IC & my PH has always been normal.

Em,
Yes, he told me to check it first thing in the am's. And it was extremely acidic, it read in the "dangerous" level for several days, then edged upwards a little each day.
I've been using the buffer for about a week now. Today, I've had my first normal reading. I hope it means I'm on the right track. Funny enough, since I've been taking this buffer thing (I don't even know what it is exactly lol) But I'm finding it
easier to stick to the diet!!! :hmm: Like I don't sit and think I'd KILL for a diet soda:evilsmile ..
He told me it would help me get my minerals balanced, so maybe that's it..maybe I feel better so I don't crave that caffeine picke me up?? Heres hoping it continues on this way..

i researched that whole PH thing. My PH was like 5.5 according to a couple old urinalysis test i had when I was really flaring. i brought it up with my urogyne. she said that was still normal within the population she sees (that's gotta be skewed, though), and she saw no need for alarm. I do take PH Control (i think they sell in ICN shop, similar to Prelief, but work better for me) pretty religiously whenever i eat/drink anything vaguely acidic. Most recent urinalysis 5/5/06 showed my PH is 6, and my frequency is way down. i honestly don't think it is down b/c of that. it does make urination burn less for me. The doc said even with the supplement PH won't go up much, but your situation shows it has.

I also take calcium and magnesium and i think that those kinda help with the whole PH/acidity issue as well. Once in a while I even buy that PH balanced water, Evamor brand in the healthy aisle, if I feel like my bladder is irritated. I have no idea if it works, but it doesn't hurt me, and even if it's placebo, it's worth a few extra cents:)

p.s. i have NEVER had a yeast infection, so i guess my PH has never been high enuf. I guess I lucked out in that regard.
