I am having a hysterectomy on monday . They said they will put a cath in me for 24 hrs and every time I have a cathter I flare and get uti's and kidney infection. I just was wondering did you all flare from the cathter ?and get uti's.

You are gonna flare from the surgery alone, don't think you can blame it on the cath alone. I flared for 6 weeks from the surgery itself, and I might add the most miserable flare ever.

See if they can put a small gauge catheter in you -- might be less irritating for the bladder. If you are prone to UTIs you may also want to ask if they can give you antibiotics for that at the same time to reduce the risk.

You are already going to be in pain from the surgery, so I really dont think you will be thinking about any other pain besides the hysterectomy pain. With your having the infection right now, and your history of infections, I am sure that they will have you on IV antibiotics to prevent a UTI or kidney infection from the cathater.

When I do get UTI's they tend to be from caths. But like Leslie said you will flare not only from the cath but the surgery itself. Also they will have you on antibotics to prevent infections. Good luck

it most have been really hard on you having reactions to caths, and getting utis, and flarers, when you had to cath all the time for rention.. yikes..
I too don't think you will be thinking too much about your bladder after surgery.. your bladder is going to be pretty ticked off about all this re-arranging.. I thought my flair was never going to end....

I had a FIT, and kept demanding the cath be removed. I even told them if they didn't remove it i would take pair of scissors and deflate the ballon and remove it myself! The Dr. on call of course wasn't the Dr. who did the surgery. Luckly the Dr. who did the surgery knew my case and when the RN's told them what type of fit i was having he told them to remove it!
I then had a rescue treatment i was ask to bring. kept ice on me in the bladder/stomach area. this seem to help a bit, but nothing is going to stop that flare until the bladder and all the other organs find a place to settle back down. It did take me any where from six to eight weeks just for a little relief from the bladder flare. My uro expected three to four mths. He was the one who kept all of this under control. My uro was the one who even gave me my pain meds after the hy. surgery since the gyn "knows about IC" but doesn't understand those chornic cases like me.
all and all it is worth it.
sending you hugs and prayers.
