I just had my 3rd rescue installation this week. My doctor wants me to do six of them because I've been in a flare. I told him that caths hurt, so he used the smallest (child's) cath. But each one has gotten progressively more painful... today I can barely sit down I'm in so much pain. It feels more like my urethera & perhaps the area where my urethera is connected to my bladder (is there a valve or something there?). I'm in way more pain that I was with just the flair. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem... I can't even imagine doing this at home like you all do!
:bonk:
any suggestions for getting rid of this pain!!!

Thanks,

you may have tracked a UTI anytime anything enters down there we are at a risk of bacteria entering causing an infection to get started.

a few things you can try, but you really need to ask the Dr to check your urine and ask him to plz send it to the lab to make sure if any bacteria is in there they will know which germ it is and it can be treated right.

in the mean time try a warm sit bath, heating pad or ice. I like ice in a case like this.
you can try something like AZO over the counter medicine.

It may be the cath that is causing you this problem and not the installments. even if you don't have a latex allergy for some reason a lot of people not just me has reported that latex can irritate that area. ask your uro about switching to a non latex cath ten french child size is what i use.

if i can help you any other way plz send me a p.m i will try my best to help you anyway i can.
sending you hugs and prayers
Rhonda

There are self lubricating caths LoFric they are expensive but worth it.

In my experience, cathing just fricking HURTS! And I didn't get any relief from the "rescue instillations." But a lot of people do.

My pain has always been the worst in my urethra. So shoving something there is bound to hurt! :cussing:

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I feel much better today, and the pain I had yesterday seems clearly some kind of pain just from the cath itself. I'm going to talk to this doctor on monday about it, and I'll ask about the non-latex caths... this guy isn't the most flexible doctor in the world, though, so I am not sure if he'll be open to anything new.
It's all so frustrating!!

Hi Amy,
what do you use instead of rescue instillations for a big flare??
just curious...

He shouldn't have no problem with trying a latex cath to see if that will make your installments any easier. At least you are trying some icer would go the other way and not even give it a fair try.
There is a lot of people even non-icers that has latex allergy's so this shouldn't be a big problem for him to handle.
good luck hon and please let us know how things goes. We are here for you.
sending you hugs and prayers

BJT,

I have sort of a weird case of IC. My doc (and me) think that in my case, my nerves are more of a problem than a leaky bladder lining. That would explain why putting lidocaine in my bladder doesn't make my pain go away.

I don't really get bad flares (cross my fingers.) I'm not taking anything for pain right now. I've just learned to live with the constantly burning urethra. Fun!

Amy, have you tried Pyridium? I had that constant burning pain like you have when you have a bladder infection. My burning pain and urethral pain are gone since I had my bladder removed, but the pelvic pain is still there. Good luck, that burning is AWFUL!!! I was on Pyridium for 9 years, and that was one of the main reasons I wanted my bladder out. Pyridium is not good for long term use. I have bad asthma and pulmonary hypertension, and I was worried that the Pyridium was making it worse.

Carly,

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, neither the orange pee pills (pyridium) or the blue pee pills do anything for my pain. I think they just help if the pain originates in the bladder. I think my problem might be with the nerves that go into the bladder. Not sure what to do about those! I asked my pain doctor about a transplant from the waist down, but he wasn't sure that would be my best option ...

bjt - you might benefit from pyridium or Urelle after the instill. Also, have the uro insert lidocaine before (and wait a bit) doing the instill. That should help with the discomfort of insertion. Mrs. B is right, it just fricking hurts unfortunately.

Ok, here is an update:
just got back from the doctor again. He was in a better mood than usual, and I think I made some progress! :) (do you ever get the feeling that your not exactly your doctor's favorite patient??)
I told him how terrible Friday was, when I got my 3rd rescue treatment. I told him that you all had suggested a non-latex cath, and lidocaine or something in the urethra first. I also told him I thought the technician who did it was rather rough, or had struggled to get the cath inside me.
so... even though he didn't respond to the non-latex cath idea, he agreed to the lidocaine approach and he did the procedure himself (and was way more gentle than the female technician was! surprising me for some reason).
It's been about an hour since, and so far so good. the lidocaine really make the whole thing very very easy. I didn't feel a thing. I'm assuming that as it wears off it will feel somewhat worse, but I haven't taken any pain killers yet just because I want to have some sense of how bad its going to get.

thanks again for all your suggestions! I am keeping the non-latex cath in the back of my mind to fight for on another day, but one step at a time.
