couple ques for tens unit veterans

Hi, I just got my tens unit yesterday. I have a few questions. I asked my physical therapist if it helps for frequency also and she said no, it's just for pain. I was kind of confused by that because isn't the interstim the same idea except put inside you? I have read many have had relief from frequency from it. Also, is it supposed to be instant relief or gradual as I keep using it? And one more question is does it help even after it is shut off or is it something that always needs to be on in order to help? I really hope to hear from people who have been using this and can answer my questions! Thanks, Ann

I think it does help in a way with the frequency. I know the more pain I have the more times I have to go. I don't know anything about interstim. With me I could tell the difference as soon as it was turned on. It only helps me as long as it is turned on. Two minutes after turning it off I can tell. I wear mine 24/7 and do know without it on at night I would be up all night with pain and peeing. I would give it a try. Can't hurt or won't they let you have it? Hope I helped some.

Ann - pretty much a TENS unit simply creates an alternative stimulus to keep your mind off of your bladder. If you're thinking about (or feeling) the electrical charge you're getting elsewhere, you won't think about your bladder pain. In addition, it can help release endorphins in some cases that will also assist with the pain issue. I've used it for something else, but I don't think it would help with frequency. Perhaps urgency, because if it feels like you have to go but don't, then the TENS should create a distraction to stop you from thinking about the urge to void. The distraction doesn't work if it isn't turned on because you're not getting the electrical stimulation. By no means is it cure, it's just something to use for pain management.
