just started Elmiron-peeing way more

I just started Elmiron yesterday, and I usually do not have urgency or frequency. I have noticed today that I have been going pee at least 3x my regular amount. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this or if this was a normal side effect.
Also, I have been talking the capsules whole, but have read that this causes stomach upset. Is this something that gets worse over time, or is this something that starts right away.

I think the GI problems typically start right away. If you've been OK so far you'll probably be fine. :)

Hi Tannis,

I am not sure about why all of sudden your urgency is more, however IC can be like that.

Some people take the capsules, some don't. I took them w/the capsul for about a month b4 i started having stomach probs, so now i take it out, so far so good.

I am one of the minority of patients (a very small minority, I think) that actually got worse on Elmiron instead of better. When I discontinued it, my frequency decreased by about 10 voids per day.

A few of us react so badly to nearly every medicine that way...don't know why but it's awfully discouraging.

Tannis - I'd make sure you get your liver enzymes checked as well. Elmiron can elevate those enzymes. I tested normal two months ago, and they were slightly elevated this week (after a blood test), but it was so minor, the doc said to continue. I haven't noticed much difference at all with the Elmiron, but I know it takes some time to determine if it works or not.

I took Elmiron for about 4 months. I just quit about a week ago. I too, thought I was *worse* on Elmiron, but I just don't know......it's so hard to know what was making me "worse" when I've been really altering and trying meds to try to stabalize.

I think Elmiron made me pee *less*, but caused more pain :hmm: Because I seem far less bloated since I stopped.

I agree w/ Rosesitty.....be sure to have your liver function monitered! It is very important! :)

I was one of the FEW people that did better taking Elmiron IN the capsule, when I took it out and mixed it in water it gave me AWFUL heartburn and really made my IBS act up. :(

I may try it again here soon.......haven't decided.

Thanks guys! Well, I have tried it both ways..with and without the capsule. I actually almost threw up with just drinking it with the water outside the capsule and was really sick for a few hours. I seem to be ok with the capsule, so I will keep taking it that way. My frequency has decreased somewhat, but it is still a little more than usual. No change in pain or urethral burning. But, it sounds like it takes a long time to work. I will hang in there. I will also ask my doctor about the liver tests. Thanks again.
