Hey all,
In the grocery store today I spoted some preservative free lunch meats by Hormel. They are called Hormel Natural Choice Deli Sandwich Meats. They are preservative free. They come in these varieties: Oven Roasted Deli Turkey
Smoked Deli Turkey
Honey Deli Turkey
Honey Deli Ham
Smoked Deli Ham
Cooked Deli Ham
(As it says on their website: http://hormelnatural.com/default.asp#)
I'm not sure about the ham. I looked at it in the store and there was an ingredient I wasnt sure about I dont remember what it was.

But anyways I picked up the honey turkey. It looks like it should be fine. It just has some salt, some kind of sugar, honey and something else. No sulfites or acids. I'll have to post again telling you what the exact ingredients are. I'm too tired to get up from my computer at the moment....lol. Haven't had any yet, I will keep you posted on my reaction to it. (Which will hopefully be no reaction.)
Thought I'd let everyone know so they can check it out for themselves.

When I looked at the ingredients listed for the ham, it listed lactic acid, which is an acidified food additive. It's used to retard the growth of some micro-organisms, which maintains the products quality and/or freshness. Bacteria does not like and acidic environment. Raise the acid level, slow the growth of bacteria. That's how the product can claim lasting freshness on the package. It is free of artificial preservatives, but they have raised the acid level of the product for safety reasons and shelf life.

Some may be able to tolerate this product, some who are super sensitive to acid, may have a reaction to it. I would suggest using caution and only trying a small amount to begin with.

I have tried the cooked deli ham and had no problem. I was so excited to see someone made something with such a few ingredients. I get tired of going to special stores for my food it was great to buy something in the regular grocery store.

I had the turkey-no problem. I did tear the skin off of it though.

Hey guys,
Glowbug you are probably right....I was wondering what they were doing to make it stay fresh. The turkey doesn't have any lactic acid so hopefully it will be ok although you are probably right that the acid is higher for all of them. Your right when I try it I'm gonna drink a lot of water and only have a little bit. Gayle and Pac its good to hear that they worked out for you!

I think I'm gonna wait a little while before I try them cause I am kinda in a mini-flare from going to the urologist the other day and having him poke my bladder. So I'll let everyone know once I finally give them a try.
