View Full Version : First missed period in my life!

First off let me say, NO I am NOT pregnant, haven't had sex in ages...So, that is not an issue. I had very light spotting around midcycle with severe lower right pelvic pain and back pain. I had a pelvic exam and intravaginal and pelvic ultrasound. The OB felt my right ovary was "swollen" and it sure felt tender when she pressed. Anyway, the ultrasound showed nothing abnormal (no cysts etc.)
The pain went away after one week and the spotting was very very light and only lasted one day. The thing is I am now over 1 week late on my period and I have NEVER in my whole life missed a period and I am very very scared about what is wrong? How would all the pieces of what I described above make any sort of sense? What on earth could be going on to make me miss a period?
Is it possible IC could make me miss a period, I did read sometimes chronic illness can cause missed periods. Also, can endometriosis or pelvic adhesions cause missed periods? I don't know if I have endo, but since the intravaginal ultrasound ruled out a lot of stuff and endo can't be seen on ultrasound I wonder if I could have endo. Also, the pelvic pain I was having for a week as I described above is gone, but I do have very short flares of the pain, sometimes lasting only a few minutes and then it passes.
I hope this isn't too complicated. Basically I am wondering about why I would miss a period when in my entire life I have never ever missed one, how the spotting and/or pelvic pain could be related and what it all means.
Can you help shed any light on this? I am scared.

I guess it would depend on a lot of different things
is your cycle changing? mine use to switch from beginnig of the month to the middle then to the end.. I just gave up keeping track
your age? could be meopause
Stress? that can make you miss your period.
I really would not be concerned at this point, but if you miss next months please call and get in to see your gyn..
(((hugs))) things will be fine

Ok, I should have said, I am only 39 (just as of last week), I am no more stressed than usual, no weight changes, exercise etc.
Could this be a symptom of IC or Endo or Pelvic Adhesions?
Has anybody else ever missed a period and then things resumed normally?

Actually, I was only 38 when I started having some menopausal symptoms. It's pretty young, but does happen occasionally.

Hi:
Does anybody know if IC can cause missed periods? I don't see how there could be a connection there other than the stress the body is under having chronic pain...
More, I am wondering if Endometriosis or pelvic adhesions can cause menstrual irregularities, I know they can cause spotting, but what about a missed period?

I beat you Donna! I was 30yo myself!!
My doctor reacted the same way .... If he'd asked me just one more time if I was sure I wasn't pregnant I would have bopped him one!!
Peaceplease,
If it continues, it's a pretty easy thing for the doc to figure out if it's menopause by doing some blood tests.

I was between Liz and Donna. Menopause symptoms began a little before 35 and I was through it and post-menopausal by the time I hit 40. It really is not that unusual to begin having the symptoms of menopause before age 40. None of us can diagnose you, however. There are numberous things besides menopause that can cause you to miss a period. Illness, extreme weight loss, stress (physical or emotional stress).....many possible causes. I think the others are right in suggesting you talk to your doctor about this. Anytime we see a change in our physical condition, we need to discuss it with a qualified physician.

my first missed period was when I was 33 years old. I had been going back and forth between urology and gynocologist for years. Previously, my periods had been very heavy and severe lasting a good 7 days with painful cramps and passing painful blood clots. I had bladder frequency since I was a small child so when my periods ended for good, my bladder symptoms became most severe. I went to so many Drs. and even a world famous clinic and not one Dr. could diagnose me or explain why my periods just stoped suddenly. They ended up saying that It was a mental problem that I had and my family believed them. Well, a relative who lived far away heard about my illness and that it was a mental problem. She said she immediately knew that I had the same disease that she had suffered all her life, saying that Drs. had her going up and down like a yo-yo. The disease was hypothyroidism and yes they have blood tests for that and my family Dr. did them on me and also on my husband. My thyroid blood tests were low normal range but my husband who had no hypothyroid symptoms came back severely low and needed thyroid hormone. But, my family Dr. felt so sorry for me being so sick and having them say I was crazy and that I would need my bladder removed one day. He decided to experiment and give me a trial of thyroid hormones and see what happened. Well, I felt the first thyroid pill and day after day I improved, and most of my symptoms began to go away. My husband did not notice any change at all. When my Dr. saw me in a few weeks I looked so much better that he kept telling me it was that famous clinic at fault, that they were not careful and it was not his fault. He told me later that after seeing the change in me he helped a lot of his patients get better by treating them the same. I ended up with a prolapsed uterus and had an unneeded hysterectomy as a surgeon told me he could have saved my uterus. I have been blessed with three beautiful children and my daughter has just told me that I will be a grandma later this year, finally! :birthday:

You are probably sick of hearing from us early memopause women, but I was 39 when I began missing periods. Thought I was pregnant because I was always regular. Doc told me I was perimenopause. I was 43 when I had my last period. Like Annie said, this is not unusual. Seems like more and more women are beginning the change earlier in life.
I was already post meno when I was dx with IC. Am not sure if IC can cause missed periods or not, but somehow I doubt it. I don't remember ever reading any posts about that and we talk about everyting around here. I do not have any of the other things you spoke about.
Please check with your gyn about this. He/she is the one who can tell you what is going on with your body.

Thanks for the replies. I do not have thyroid problems, infact my thyroid was just tested about 1 month ago and my levels are excellent. What I am wondering and sorry to obnoxiously keep asking it over and over is if anybody knows if
(1) IC can mess up the menstrual cycles pattern
(2) If endometriosis and or pelvic adhesions can cause skipped periods and cycle disturbances.
Thanks a lot
