Okay.... so I get to work this morning SLOWLY. Just not feeling top notch... kinda thought about taking the day off... decided to take it easy.
I'm sitting at my desk at 10:30AM when I hear someone walk up the stairs and then down the hallways of my building. They are quietly jiggling every door. Then, "he" finds my closed door, walks in and shuts it behind him without saying a frickin word. I turn my head, see a large scary man that I don't know standing in my office. He hasn't knocked... but he has invaded my personal space. He's holding two frames and says that he's a wholesaler trying to sell stuff.
Inside, I felt intimidated. I stood, kept my desk between us, and firmly told him to get out of my office. (Went back to the time I worked for the feds and had to raise my voice a time or two) He tried to talk back several times about selling stuff. I raised my voice and told him to get out three times. He did... fled down the stairs to his car and drove off. I got his license plate and am waiting for the police.
You just don't walk into someones private office, door closed, and then shut the door behind you. This happened a month ago to man in the same building who was also very intimidated when the door was shut. Why was he trying all the doors??? Why was he ignoring signs??? Why did he offer different stories to different tenants??? I don't know... but he could have been rapist, or anything. Our building was broken into two weeks ago again too.
Dear gods... this is one hell of a way to start the week. Talk about stressed out! I think I should have pepper spray under my desk... and a gun doesn't sound half bad too. Oh well! :::sigh:::

Oh my gosh, that IS scary. I'm glad you got the license number of the car he was driving. Hopefully that will help the police find him and figure out what is going on.
I'm so sorry that happened.

Oh cripes Jill!! And I thought I was having a day from hell!! (I must say though, my worst Monday in history so far - and not even health related, ugh...) But wow, nothing like that! I would have been shaking like a leaf! I agree, it sounds very very fishy - you don't walk into someone's office like that 1) with out knocking 2) and close the door behind you when you haven't knocked or announced yourself... That was fantastic the way you handled it! And getting the license plate number - BRAVO!! Do keep us posted as to what the police have to say! Tomorrow morning, lock your door, k? ;)
Hugs!!!!!!!

OMG! That is VERY scary! I would have freaked out! I am so proud of you for handling yourself with dignity, strength, and composure! I am also glad that you had the presence of mind to think to get the license plate number. I hope they catch this freak and are able to find out if he is the one responsible for the break-ins. You should be very proud of yourself for remaining calm, firm, and authoritative. Good for you! Please update us after the police have gone! Hugs, Amy

Wow, that's messed up. Sounds to me like that guy might've been on drugs and was desperate to make money without really being sure what he was doing. I'm glad you didn't freak out, who knows what would've happened if you hadn't kept calm?
Keep us updated on the case!

I am so glad you were not hurt. You handled yourself well. I am not sure I would have been able to stay as calm as you did. It is a lesson we all should take to heart and learn from.

Hells Bells! As if there isnt enough to deal with on a daily basis....thankfully it didn't escalate into anything more. Great job on standing your ground, its hard to be that way under the circumstances...but that's what he gets for being so forward by walking into your office....yeeeeeeeeesh!!!
I'm really Glad you're OK...maybe you could get one of those "canes" or wedges to keep the door from being opened while you're there.(???)

OMIGOSH! That is scary. I really think having a pepper spray in your desk where it's easy to reach is a very good idea --- you might even get two so you can have one in your pocket.
Hugs,
Donna
Geez! That's just about the last thing anyone needs! Hopefully the police were helpful & that will be the last you'll ever see of that guy!

Glad you're okay too....that sounds too damn scary and too close for comfort! Did you report him to the police and if so, what did they do/say? I hope they arrested him or at the very least held him at the precinct for a good long chat..

Jill - I am so sorry that this happened to you! I have had very similar things happen at my office several times.
The first time we had someone come saying that they were from some sort of religious group, it was while most of the employees were in a meeting. He got past everyone, made it to my office and stole my credit card and $50 (I had $75). He left enough so that I would not notice immediately and he took a card from the back of my wallet (one that I don't use very often). He immediately charged more than $3,500 to the card. He bought a big screen TV, a dvd player, $250 in porn (can you believe?), and $300 dinner to a restaurant that I can't afford.
The second time it was a group of men trying to sell massages. Tell me they weren't up to something. Turns out that one of our employees had several of her checks stolen. They really knew what they were doing because they stole checks from the middle of the checkbook, so she would not notice. He wrote a check for cash and got $800 from a girl making a little above minimum wage.
Then, a month after that someone else came in around lunch wanting to sell pictures. He was carrying frames and tried to push his way into the building. After than we got surveillance cameras and posted signs everywhere. We haven't had anyone try it since.
Anyone trying to force their way in is up to no good. I'm so glad that you are okay and that you called the police!
