My doctor gave me only about a weeks worth of Hyoscamine after the procedure on friday. I took my last one yesterday and today I feel a little discomfort. I just went to the restroom and now i have a little urethral discomfort and the feeling I could go again. Did anyone have a problem not being on the hyoscamine? I don't know if this could be a flare from meatloaf I ate two nights ago or not. It only had a little amount of ketchup on the top. I am pretty uncomfortable and frustrated because I have for the most part been following the diet (except for the meatloaf). Any advice?

If hyoscyamine keeps you comfortable, my suggestion would be to call and ask about a refill.

Ketchup is a killer for me, but I'm allergic to tomato in addition to IC. I make meatloaf without any tomato and it's delicious according to my family.

Well, I do know that's an antispasmodic - quite a few of us have it around, lol. I took Ditropan (does basically the same thing) and for the longest time it was a definite gotta have, couldn't do without. Now, I take it if I need it, I even know how long it takes to kick in due to an experiment when I first started it thinking I could do without it, lol. Do you have any pyridium or OTC pyridium? (AZO Standard or Uristat) That can help with that feeling until your bladder calms down..Or you could call your doc (I would do this as well) and tell them the situation, and see what they think! I do know that quite a few of us are on antispasmodics, and they can be a huge help!!!!!

Hugs!

Thanks ladies! I needed a little encouragement of what to do. I will feel fine, then I get that uncomfortable urethral feeling, the hardest in the world to explain, and I get depressed about it. I dont even want to go out to eat for a co-workers' birthday cause I am afraid I will be uncomfortable after eating. Basically I get down whenever I have a symptom.

Also, another question here. Will Detrol help with the urethral discomfort after going? I guess I don't understand how the bladder and the urethral discomfort are related. But I am totally getting down about it.

Detrol and Ditropan both work to control the bladder contractions, spasms etc. When I first saw my doc (before IC diagnosis) I went in for what were just urethral spasms (granted they were horrid!) and I was given Ditropan - and it really helped, I had forgotten what it felt like to urinate with out pain - and without painful spasms afterwards, and those could last 5 minutes to hours after...ugh.

But eventually my bladder got into the act, and that led to my IC diagnosis, starting Elmiron and Vistaril. My Ditropan was a key player in my med combo - I believe they all worked better as a team, then each one would individually. The bladder and urethra are connected so what's bugging one can bug the other, sometimes I had a hard time distinguishing between the two - as to who was acting up, lol. Here's a link to a diagram to show you just how they relate to one another! ;) Hope this helps a little bit!! :) :) :)

Hi Dawn, I take hyoscyamine (wish I new how to pronouce that!! LOL) for spasms. I get spasms that I can actually feel in my pelvic floor....all around my urethra/vagina/rectum. The hyoscyamine really helps me with that.
I also have alot of urethral discomfort. For that I take Pyridium. It doesn't help much, but helps a little bit.
It is very difficult sometime to NOT let it get you down, I know it's hard. We're always here for you! I hope you feel better soon!

When I went to my first urologist he thought it might be overactive bladder. So he tried me on Vesicare, Enablex and finally Ditropan. They helped a little with frequency but not with the urethral discomfort. Of course he wasn't even thinking IC. Do you think it is a lost cause to try another now that i have been diagnosed? Sorry to be so questioning today, I am having a down day because of this. On top of everything I am trying to lose a little weight but find it hard with my colitis diet, the IC diet and being scared to exercise after having the scope last week.

As for what happened to me, if you are on other meds, adding this one in just might help it work better. For me each of my meds by themselves didn't completely cut it, but when they are all together, they do the job nicely! It will get better, in the beginning there is just so much trial and error - with foods, with medications, etc.

Yep! ;) I was taking it for my colitis, and it's also an ingredient in Pyridium Plus... :)
