I have both IC and IBS. I have had IBS for many yeats. The IC is more recent.

I was in agony with IC and made radical changes to my diet because I couldn't live with the pain. I guess I had more tolerance for IBS. I have always been constipated. Sometimes i would have a bowel movement for 3-4 days. I would end up drinking a laxitive tea which would give e miserable cramps, but do the job, if you know what i mean.

I have been on this diet for 5+ weeks, and not only is my IC in remission, but so is my IBS. I am regular for the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE :woohoo:

This is what I did/do: I eliminated caffeine, dairy, sugar( including chocolate :-(
tomato products, gluten, all processed and fried foods, and soy. I also took a month of probiotics and experimented with organic herbs.
I have a theory that years of having IBS and the pressure it causes does have an effect on the bladder, urethra, etc. Just my own theory.

What I eat: In the morning I usually make oatmeal. I add fruit and ground flax seeds. I use rice milk or almond milk. Some days I make eggs. I use 2 eggs, but disgard one yoke. That is the dairy I allow myself. I use gluten free bread that I buy at a health food store.
I try to use free range chicken and eggs, and as much wild caught fish as I can afford.
I eat a lot of vegetables which I usually steam. Occasionally I will stir fry.
I buy fresh herbs like rosemary, dill, basil, and oregano. I use a lot of lemon. Yes, I know lemon is acidic...but it turns alkaline once ingested.
My big treat is a rice cake with cashew butter and rice syrup. The rice syrup is also from health food store, and is a very good sugar replacement.

I make brown rice, and limited amounts of cooked beans. No canned, because they are processed.
I use organic extra virgin oil. Occasionally I cheat and use real butter.

Before I did this diet I would feel sick from IBS. The toxins would build up and I would get flu-like symptoms. Now that I am regular, they are eliminated.

It is a lot of work, bit sooooo worth it.
Feel free to email me about herbs I use, or whatever

I am so glad to hear you are doing so well!! It's a nice feeling isn't it when you know what you are doing is working!!!!!! I tend to agree with you on the bladder/intestinal connection - now a days, gas or constipation is really the only thing can aggrivate my bladder... And ever since getting my colitis under control, my bladder has been doing surprisingly well....gotta wonder!!! ;)

Hi Traceann,

Now that you responed that constipation also affects your IC, I am really wondering if studies have been done on this.

I really feel like the diet change I was forced to make was a blessing in disguise. I will never eat like I used to again now that I know that I can feel good. Glad you are in remission too

I noticed too that when I had IC trouble years ago, but never got to the point of diagnosis - kept going to the doc, but by the time we decided a uro was in order, it mysteriously went away --- But the surprising thing is I was having intestinal troubles as well, right along with it. That too went away...it's always been in the back of my mind since it all acted up again in 2004, if there wasn't some kind of connection...for me they seem to be hand in hand..... Reminds me of the chicken and the egg thing!!! LOL

I do whatever I can to avoid constipation, my daily regimen of fiber (soluable mostly) and fiber rich foods I will never ever give up!! LOL!!!!

:)
