Hi everyone,

I'm on the phone right now with Gaye Sandler, author of "Patient to Patient: Managing IC & Related Conditions." She has a problem that she wants your help with, if possible. Gaye has very severe forms of osteomalacia & osteoporosis which means that her body is having trouble absorbing Vitamin D. Normally, a patient would spend alot of time out in the sunshine, which helps their body get Vitamin D. Gaye, unfortunately, can't do this because she also has a sun sensitivity. So, she is now desperately seeking IC friendly forms of Vitamin D. She is also lactose intolerant and can't drink milk.

Have any of you found any IC friendly sources of Vitamin D that do not involve milk or sunshine?? If so, please let me know!

There are new forms of Fosomax and Actonel now ( drugs for osteoporosis) with extra D.....supposed to be helpful in cases like hers. Hope this may help!

how about just taking vitamin D capsules? They also have the Viactiv chews that have vitamin D in them. I've got osteopenia and Lupus, so I cant go into the sun either..I get sores and very ill.

Lactaid is another one....

The one that immediately comes to my mind is cod liver oil. I remember as a child being given this during the winter months when there isn't much sun. Some fish are pretty high in Vitamin D, but I'm not sure which ones have the most --- I think salmon is one, but not certain.

I've heard that vitamin D3 is a higher quality than D2 which is used in cheaper vitamins. I think D3 is what your body makes in the sun. Verify this by reading on the net. PV

I take vit D suppliments with no problem. I'm allergic to fish but I hear oily fish are a good source.

I take allergy D caps, by twinlab. They are the D3 form and are water dispersed,
which just means your body will get rid of what it doesn't need, so you don't have too much. They work for me :)

My doctor has me taking prescription Vit D because mine is really low. He said my body is not absorbing it. He told me not to take over the counter vit d except what I get in my calcium. He also said it could be dangerous if you get to much so he has me come back every 3 months for bloodwork. He started me out on 3 days a week which brought my level up some and then he put me on 7 days a week. I do have osteoprosis so I'm hoping this helps.

Just a comment for the rest of us, since it's very difficult to get the Vitamin D you need from anything other than the sun itself, health officials are suggesting that people get some sun exposure. But by "some" the truth is all you need to do is to expose your face and roll up your sleeves to your elbows so they can be exposed, and expose them for 15 minutes. That should do it. (Too tired to edit that other sentence; it's 1 am)

It would be a good idea to do some research for osteoporosis. My findings are that not only is vitamin D important for calcium absorption but also many other factors. Magnesium, boron, vitamin k, manganese, zinc, copper, etc. Some vitamin companies make a tablet for bone building that includes most of these.
