? :help: My MD just prescribed B&O Suppositories for pain and bladder spasms because I have a severe kidney infection and suffering from horrible retention issues. I'm not excited about putting anything "up there".

I don't know anything about these suppositories. :hmm: After you put them in, how long do you leave it in? Do you leave it in? Are they gonna make me sleepy? The doc said they're VERY STRONG and will probably make me sleepy. Sorry to sound dumb but I just don't know? (Call me dumb, just want to make sure I'm doing correctly).

Please let me know ASAP, as I need to use one here really quick  .

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer my question. ;)

The B & O is inserted into the rectum and left there. I was told it helps with bladder/urethra pain because it is inserted very close to the painful area. I have only used them in the hospital, but they were very effective. I can't say whether they made me sleepy or if it was the relief from the pain that allowed me to sleep.

We called them "magic bullets" because they were so effective so quickly.

I wouldn't plan on going anywhere after inserting one until you know how it's going to effect you. Hopefully you'll get some much needed rest.

Warm hugs,
Donna

Thanks Donna, I appreciate the info. I really had no idea. Turns out all the info including instructions was in the sheet attached to my prescription sack. I've never used anything like this. They really do work well for bladder spasms and pain. My MD prescribed them because the Pyridium and Prosed dyes were really aggrevating my kidneys on top of the infection.

This by far is the worst infection I've EVER had. I really think my bladder prolapse is aggravating things and causing the retention problems I'm having. I'm on bedrest starting yesterday through the weekend so I had better get back to "resting".

Thanks again Donna for the info. I felt stupid :hmm: asking but needed to.

I have only had a B&O once. My diagnosing urologist in Memphis inserted it when I was still under anesthesia after my cysto/hydro because he was afraid I'd be in horrible pain when I woke up -- so I don't remember the insertion part at all, but I know I never had to pull anything out :)

I DO know that, with that thing in there, I had no spasms. 'Course, I'd just had anesthesia and post-op pain injections, but things felt pretty calm down there and I didn't have to pee very badly at all for a while.

I hope it keeps helping you!

Thanks for the info. They're definately helping me today. When I woke up, I could hardly walk to the bathroom and since I put one in and took my other meds - things are much more comfortable. Good to hear from you. I sent you a couple emails and hadn't heard back from you, thought maybe you weren't feeling well or something was really wrong.

Have a good weekend. Take care of yourself and don't work too hard.

Love from far away,
Tracy K.

I to have only had them a couple times after surgery. Glad to know they are helping you and that the doctors listened to you about your pain. Although I am not happy hearing you have another kidney infection.....Otherwise hope things are looking up.... :kissing: :grouphug:

I use them for spasms and just when the pain gets unbearable (like its getting now  )
Im glad this thread was started. When I insert mine (btw, this may be too much info, but I gotta ask!) it's like I can't get it in far enough and if I don't lay on my stomach for 30 min it kind of leaks out , not a lot but Im wondering if Im doing something wrong. It KILLS me to lay on my stomach, but if I do then it doesn't leak. That probably sounds wierd, but I just thought Id share and try to see if I'm not doing something right.
Thanks!!!! :grouphug:

I don't want to offend anyone here. My instructions were to lay on my left side, insert the suppository far into the rectum and what I found is the muscle in there would eventually grasp and pull it to where it was comfortable for me. I know what you're saying about it leaking, mine felt that way the 1st time I used them, cause I had NO clue what I was doing. I had never used a suppository for ANYTHING, EVER. So I was really apprehensive and nervous. I got through it though and if I had to do it right now, it would be a sinch.

I have a question, my doctor told me I could only use them for 2 days MAX, did anyone else's doctor say this and why? My instructions said can be used every 6-8 hours, other than that - nothing. I've found personally the day after using even one, I get stomach cramps BAD and diarreah (sp?) that whole next day. Maybe it's just ME, I'm always the odd one in the bunch. :)

THe same thing happens to me sometimes (I'm the odd one in the bunch as well!). Last night I used one and this morning was having "bathroom cramps" and had diarrea then I started having bladder spasms (I was hurting before the bathroom thing) and had to use another one. Sometimes I feel that muscle you were talking about and it works great, just the past few I've used I ha a hard time. This morning though, it worked the right way and no leaking. My dr never told me a maximum number of days to use those. My box says the same: every 6-8 hours. I try to use only one a day (when things are really bad like thay are right now) I used one this morning and if I need to I will use another tonight. Although my insuranse co will only let me have 15 a month my dr always writes the rx for 24. Insuranse says I have to have cancer to get more than 15, I think that's a bunch of bull! But that's the first Ive heard of drs saying use for 2 days max. I hope someone else has an answer. :grouphug:

Thanks for your info. Glad someone else can relate. Sometimes I feel really weird talking about this kind of stuff. I am on Oxycontin and Darvocet for pain so maybe that's why he said I could only use them for 2 days.

I'm flaring sooo badly today and sooo sleepy. I need to lay down. I need to use another one of these because my bladder has shut down again and having spasms cause I just cathed, ugh. Another fun filled day - oh yay!

I dont know why your doc said only for 2days. My doc gives me 4 a day but I try to never use more than 2 a day. I have actually been able to use only 1-2 a week lately, which is nice. What size are yours, the 15A or 16A? I have the 16 A and they are bigger than the 15A, which isn't much fun!!
I also get the leaky thing, it isn't cool! I don't know what is from, it is weird. And the next day I get a bloated tummy and bathroom issues too. It is nice sometimes because I get very constipated from the Oxycontin and those help move things along.
I love b & o though. I am SO happy I heard of them here. I read of them and asked my doc about them that day. She said yes right away.

I got my script and finally had it filled after carrying it around for 2 mos. They worked great for my bad flare but the bathroom issues are awful. It was so bad, when I passed gas, I had some "other" stuff come out. I am still having a really lose stool and I took my 1st B&O Sunday. What in the world is in those things that would cause such bad diarreah. I did sleep like a baby though. Oh, I think the reason why your Dr says no more then 2 days in a row is b/c they are highly addictive. My package info says it causes a "true opium" addiction. Whatever that means. I am going to try to make mine last. I was really worried about taking my other meds w/ them at the same time. Like my zanaflex and my vistaril. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I always wondered why they couldn't make one of these that was inserted into the VAGINA instead of the rectum. Then perhaps the after bathroom effects would not be so great? Wonder if anyone has ever inserted one in the vagina while staying laying down and if so if it hurt them, was dangerous or did no good? Just curious...I haven't been prescribed them in decades personally.

I was just gonna post this question today to see if anyone was having the same problem. When I use them, the day afterwards I have severe cramping and don't leave the bathroom at all for a few hours. I can't for reasons I'm sure you can all guess. Man! I only use them when I'm having spasms which is why my doctor prescribed them to begin with.

I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone...I wish we could take them without having the horrible after affects, huh? They work really well for me. I don't use them enough to see any addictive behaviors so I know I'm okay there. ;)

I hope things get better for you.

Just want to jump in here...

My URO told me that I COULD insert it in my vagina...I never did, but she said some people feel uncomfortable inserting them in the retum, and it is perfectly OK to insert it in the vagina. I quess that would be your doctors call. Intersting though hah?

Someone here has to try this. I might try 1/2 and see. I used 1/2 of it yesterday and 2 hours later, I had the diarrhea again! What is in them that does this? Then all the next day, every time I pee, I have a little something extra!!!!!!!!!!! Why can't we just have 8 hours w/o something wrong w/ our plumbing?

This is an older post...but...did anyone ACTUALLY use the b&o vaginally???!!?? Starting to have diarrhea here too from the rectal suppositories...

Not condoning vaginal use, mind you, just wondering...
