I have a question....How long do rescue instills last for? I had one yesturday and i was pain free for a couple hours then it came back. Ever since the pain came back its been 20x worse!!! My instill consisted of lidocane and a steriod. Thanks a bunch!! i was just soo curious about how long they last cuz i think it helped while it lasted!!!

It varies for me...sometimes I'll get relief for up to 48 hours depending on how badly I was hurting to begin with. Other times I'll only get relief for a few hours after I release the instill. My instills are heparin, lidocaine and sodium bicarb and I've found that the longer I hold it, the longer it works for me. My bladder actually becomes so numb that I can't tell when I've got to pee, and when I try I feel no sensations at all --which is absolutely wonderful!

I dont know how long you're supposed to hold the instills when there's a steroid involved, but you might ask your doctor what's the max time to hold it, and try that...see if it helps you get longer relief.

Also, sometimes there is a cumulative effect with instills as they help to 'heal' the bladder lining.

Hugs, Sandy

It varies.....sometimes I think it has something to do with how long I hold it and what condition I am in before hand. Seems when I really need it they don't last as long as when it is just to keep me at my norm. Do Steroids really fit rescue?? :grouphug: Sure hope you feel better soon and that you can have a therapy that keeps you feeling well long term! :grouphug:

Well today was horrible!!! Im in soo much pain,meaning...burning and pelvic pain. Do u think its just irritation from the cathater or do u think its possibly an infection? I had some cipro left over so im takin one a day for 3days to see if it will work. I cant handle this anymore....its been hard on me and my family. I told my mom i cant wait to post in the "remission" section. You are my best friends and i love you all for the support and prayers!! Thanks again!!

i agree it can varie depending on the person and how long they have used the installment what is in the installment etc.
My installment is of heparin, marcaine, and s. water.
at first they didn't last very long at all, but some days they will last up to six hours. heck i've had the relief feeling to last a few days to be honest. I was in remission one time for eighteen months!
but i'm the odd ball who does them any where from three to four times daily at home. (with the dr's approval) that is what i did before when i was in remission. Hopefully when this blockage is out of my left double collecting system. (i was born with three kidneys) that remission will soon find me again.
Good luck hon and don't give up. your dr. may be able to adjust the medicine for you.
you may want to ask him to make sure your using a latex free cath. even if you don't have a latex allegy sometime it can still borther us down stairs. you may even ask him to change the installment all together until you find something that seems to be helping more then keep at it.

Oh it wouldn't hurt to be checked for a UTI. any time after we are cath we are at high risk for those. after each treatment ask the dr about a sample of anti. or for him to give you an RX to fill so you can take one after each one to wared off any unfriendly baterica.
sending you hugs and prayers

I would want to make sure it isn't an infection....everytime you use a catheder the risk for an infection goes up a bit.

One other thing I think I should mention is the one side effect I had from rescue instills was that if I held it too long I would get retention....which also can increase risk of infection.

If it turns out that this is irritation from the catheder than I would look into allergic reaction to latex (some people don't find that out till their bladder reacts), size it right for you (is it too big, too small?)
