Hi everyone. I was wondering why my doc would put me neurotin? I dont have seizures, so what is the deal with this medication and IC? I told him I get relief from some of the pain when I take bendryl but he put me on the elmiron, neurotin, and enablex. I havent started any of them yet, as Im waiting to see my new gyno and hopefully he will do his surgery for my endometriosis and then I can deal with the IC and the lovely side effects of this medication. Im also on femara and a progestrone pill and the femara is causing major shedding in the hair dept lol. Which is one reason why I dont want to start the elmiron until after Im off the femara. Is anyone else on the neurotin for their IC? does it help??

Brooks,

Neurontin is indeed a seizure medication but like many other medications, it is also used to treat other things. In this instance, the thought is since many IC patients experience neuropathic pain vs. visceral pain (i.e., visceral pain is like when you burn your hand or cut yourself...its a different pain than neuropathic pain), the neurontin helps "coat" the nerve endings, and in doing so, blocks the pain signals sent by the nerves to your brain.

Its a hit and miss thing however, as it works for some people yet not for others. I myself cannot take it nor anything in that family because I went into major seizures when the dose was upped - but that is just MY experience. So many out here do take it and it helps.

Hope this answers some of your questions.
