Good morning everyone. I recently began doing the rescue instills (actually, my husband does them). Typically, I have very little pain while it's being done. We did one last night, and this morning when I voided, it burned very badly and there was a fair amount of blood (enough to cover the toilet paper). Has anyone else had this experience? The strange thing is, when I voided about an hour or so after the instill, I had no pain and no bleeding. I am thinking maybe my urethra is just a little irritated, but it still worried me a bit. Help!!!

I would have your doctor check your urine for infection first -- it's pretty easy to get a true UTI when doing instillations; any time something is placed in the urethra, it can carry bacteria. Anytime you see blood you should be checked to be sure.

If your urine is clear of infection, then yes, it could be just inflammation and irritation. I have poked myself in the bladder with my catheters before, and it hurts - the tip of the cath comes out bloody if I do that, and it burns more to urinate after for a little while. However, as I mentioned, I usually see the doctor just to make sure there isn't an infection brewing when that happens.

YOU REALLY should call your Dr asap. Might be an infection. Might be something else. Keep us posted.

Thank you for responding. I have called and left a message for my doctor. Will keep you posted. The pain and bleeding are better right now, so I am hoping it was just some irritation, but better safe than sorry!

I would call the dr too but also use the Lo-Fric caths. They prevent you from poking your bladder in anyway. Plus they are painless for me. A little discomfort after but I was doing it every three hours. When I had the regular caths they hurt so bad going in and coming out. Plus burning and infections.

That was my first thought when you said you seen blood the following morning after an installment. I hope you was able to get into the office today to be checked. I would also ask the Dr. to give you a mild anti. to take once a day to avoid these infection or at least UTI down the road. I do rescue treatments four times a day at home and must take a low dose of anti. nightly.
if you wasn't able to get into the office today and the pain is really bad I would call the on-call Dr. and go on into the E.R if your lucky hopefully your uro will meet you there if not he can at least call ahead of time with some orders or tell them your own your way so you don't have to wait as long. The e.r then can call the dr. on call with some results and then he can tell the e.r Dr's how to treat you. Also if your in a great deal of pain they should be able to get it under control there. its also a good idea if you can take proof to the e.r you have IC. They seem to do more if you have proof in your hand that you have it.
sending you hugs and prayers
