How long are you put under for the hydro/cysto? How long are you at the hospital? Do they give you pain medication before sending you home? Obviously getting nervous!
I think it was about 40 minutes. Reading my bill later, I discovered they'd given me morphine during the procedure. (That was a surprise to me). They also gave me Darvocet for pain for a few days after. That was all I needed & I only needed a few doses. I was back to my prior level of discomfort (pre-surgery level) within a few days.
I didn't get any real benefit from the procedure, beyond having a diagnosis & photos, but many IC patients get relief for awhile after they recover. Hope you are one of them!

I wasn't under very long...the whole thing was maybe an hour..I was sore a couple days, nothing bad at all...It didn't help me at all except for giving me great photos ( See them here on the ICN under the name of Lesa) to help me find a surgeon to remove my bladder ( 2 months ago)

I was under for an hour. They gave me pain medication to relax me while I was waiting to go in. Plus I'm allergic to laxtex so they gave me 5 differnt medications in my IV made me very very tired. they gave me pain meds to take home.

I'm under for twenty mins and that is with my uro removing my hunner ulcers also and I always have at least four huge ones.
after you wake up from the surgery they will treat your pain while in the first recovery room then you sent to the next one to make sure you can pee and keep liquids down. After you're albe to use the restroom they will let you get dress and send you home. Normally All Dr's send there patients home with some thing to control there pain issues while there recovering.
but some people wake up from the surgery and all there pain is gone! they go into remission. remission last for different lenghs in time depending on the patient.
Hope this helps. Its normal to be nervous hon. I've had it done God only knows how many times since I was dx almost four years ago, and each and every time I'm scared. I just had one Feb 7th of this year.
Hope you have a speedy recovery please keep us update on how you are.
sending you hugs and prayers

When I have a spinal, it takes about an hour for it to wear off; a general takes about the same length of time, but I'm left very sleepy for most of a day. I spend one night in the hospital.

I'm under for abut 20 minutes. Altogether in there for about an hour. They do give me something for the pain while I'm there. I go home after an hour, after I go to the bathroom.

WOW...I can see we are all different. I was only out for about 20 mins. BUT I was kept in the day surgical unit for 6-7 hours afterwards. I have a problem with nausea, so they always had to make sure I was stable enough to leave the hospital. They would not let me go until I could pee (THAT was never a problem with me LOL) and they like you to eat something. I just had crackers and ginger ale or water.
PS
I know it's hard to hear this, but don't be nervous everything will be ok. ;)

I'm with the others in the 20 minute category although I believe I was asleep for about a hour total, gotta have time for the anesthesia to wear off. It burned like *ell when I peed for 2 days, there was blood in my urine too. I could tell exactly how far that scope was too! I had mine done on a Friday morning & was back to work on Monday. I'm glad I scheduled it on a Friday otherwise I would've had to call in sick to the 2 days following. I remember waking up & asking #1 where's my husband? #2 when can I go home!!!

Jen,
That is to funny. The first thing I always said was "I have to pee!" they would say "NO you don't!" we would go back and forth, of course, I always won, and I didn't really have to pee! LOL. It was just pressure from the procedure.

Glad you found that funny! Ever since I got married & I've had surgery, those are the only 2 questions I can recall asking!!! When I had the Hydrothermal Ablation done in August, I REALLY had to pee!!! once I took care of that, they were practically pushing me out the door & I was still sleepy from receiving too much anesthesia...which I TOLD them that I have had issues with in the past!!

I didn't mean that in a disrepectful way. I'm sorry if you thought I was out line for saying that.
I do understand what you mean about them wanting to push you out the door. Even though they used to keep me for a few hours after, It would of made me feel better if I could have spent the night. It was the drive home that always killed me. I have always had issues with anesthesia, they don't seem to listen when you tell them that.

I think my procedure itself took about 20 minutes -- but I was under about maybe 45 minutes or so? They put you to sleep and then prep stuff, and then afterwards it takes you a few minutes to decide to wake up. ;)
However, be prepared to be at the hospital for at least 6 hours. There's always a wait before the procedure while you talk to the nurses, anesthesiologist, and your uro... plus, there are usually several other people in line for surgeries by the same uro that day.
Then, you will have to spend time in the recovery room -- mine was good, it was quiet and dark, and the hospital I went to provided one nurse for each patient in recovery, so if you needed anything she was right there.
As for pain control, I was given a B&O (belladonna and opium) suppository while under, then some Dilaudid in the recovery room, and Percocet to take home with me.
After a while, they moved me to another recovery room where my hubby could come and see me, and then they made me drink a little water and pee while I was there to make sure I was not going to need a Foley cath (I didn't, I peed just fine on my own :) )

ICDonna, when you have your hydro/cysto you usually have a spinal anesthesia. Is that a spinal or just an epidural? I've never had either, but I've had a spinal tap (about 18 years ago) and the worst part was having to stay flat on my back for 8 hours to avoid the dreaded "spinal headache". (The nurses kept telling me to drink water to replenish the spinal fluid, but most of the water ended up in my bladder, and using a bedpan when you can't even raise your head is not easy. And this was before I had IC!)

The procedure took about 45 minutes the first time and then I had it done again 5 months later. I can't say it provided to much relief, but it was worth a try. I did get pain medication during and after the procedure. I did have some buring afterwards. I will say that once I came back from the anasthesia, I had to pee really bad and really felt good... My stay was just in the recovery room and then went home with Celebrex for the pain and continue to take my medications i.e Elmiron, Santura and Cymbalta. Good luck...Carmen

I am so afaird of getting the hydro done i have to in a couple of weeks. I am a nervous wreak. My doctor has explained everything in detail and I have read everything about it. I am so scared of being put to sleep and waking up in pain. My mom really thinks that i should not do it and I keep telling her that it is the only way that i will get a true pic of my bladder to really tell if I have IC. She says that I shouldnt rush into things but I have been dealing with this for six years trying to find a doctor to tell me what the heck is wrong with me and finally I do and she feels like everything is moving to fast. I am overwhelmed but I am ready for answers. I dont want to take all of these meds if it is not IC. No matter what I say to her she does not seem comfortable. Which does not help my situation of calming down. I am a nervous wreak all i do is worry about this and want to know more and more and I think that this will ease something knowing and seeing.

Jamie, it's normal for you and your mother to be nervous, it is after all a surgical procedure. I just had my first one done four weeks ago Monday. I got my prescriptions filled ahead of time so my husband wouldn't have to deal with it the day of the procedure. My uro gave me Norco #10 and Pyridium as well as Cipro (only for three days). I had mine done in a surgical center close to home. The recovery nurse called me on Friday before to go over somethings with me and the anesteciologist (sp) called me the night before the procedure. The both were very reassuring. They gave me a sedative to calm me down when they took me back and put me in bed. Then they took me in and the next thing I knew they were calling my name and I woke up. I really don't remember leaving the surgery room and going to recovery? But I can tell you the first sensation I felt was that I had to go pee. The nurses assured me that I didn't need to and gave me some fentanyl (sp) and the sensation went away. I then got dressed, they gave me some more fentanly and I went home. The real pain didn't start until later that evening. I had a biopsy done as well so maybe that is why it hurt so bad to urinate, but by the next morning I was feeling pretty good. Just remember to take your pyridium and pain meds so that your pain won't get out of control.
I felt relieved (?) I guess knowing that it was IC and not something else. Hopefully your mom will understand this, but of course she is worried about you, after all you are her daughter and she loves you and she doesn't want to see you in pain, or having to have this or any other procedure done. Hopefully it will be therapuetic for you like it is for others (not me yet!).
You will be fine! Try to think of it as a positive step towards your healing.

Everything will be fine. I had my second hydro.cysto April 6th. I was under for almost 30 minutes. The first thing I asked after coming out of it I have to pee. Glad to hear someone else had the same situation. It has not helped with the peeing but has helped bring the pain down half a notch. The only problem that I am experiencing is fluid retention. I had this before the procedure then it went down but now I have a belly that looks like I am at least 3 months pregnant. Has anyone else had this problem??

JM, the day of my hydro, March 16th, I weighed myself in the morning and I weighed 127, the next day after the procedure, in the morning, I weighed 135?! I have lost 5lbs of it, but it took awhile. I read that Pyridium causes water retention, which it sure does for me. Most days now (last two weeks)I am able to get away with only one pyridium per day. So, yes I did have a preg belly and still do, but not as bad.

Wow! How different we can all be??!! I had the procedure done a few days after Christmas, so it was easier for my husband to take me to the hospital and my mom could be here with the kids. I was nervous and took a Xanax before I went. Everyone was nice, but it was hard waiting to go in to have it done. I was under for over an hour.
I had ulcers and there was a lot of bleeding. They had put a "cocktail" of meds in my bladder when they saw how bad it was and I guess that made it take more time. I had expected to go home that afternoon, but ended up being catheritized and stuck in bed in the hospital for 2 days. I was nausaus from the anethesia despite being given something to help me not feel so sick. The doctor was suppose to do a biopsy, but she said my lining was too bad and they couldn't do it. But they certainly knew for sure I had IC.
It sounds like most people get pain relief and feel much better after the procedure. But for me, it just flared everything up 100 times and I felt miserable for the next 5/6 weeks!!!!!!!!! Did anyone else have that experience where it made things worse??? Maybe I was just the lucky one! LOL. I was sent home with pyridium, ambien cr and percocet. Unfortunately percocet makes me itchy and sick to my stomache, so I can only take a little...but after that, I hurt so much I didn't care if I itched or felt sick from it!!! I took it.
My abdomen was so swollen after the procedure, and it is still a little swollen and gets very tender. So, I am always wearing loose fiiting clothes. I also weighed 5 lbs more afterwards. I went from 123 lbs to 128 lbs. But then after that and starting the other meds (elmiron, urocit-k), weekly bladder instillations and the IC diet I lost the 5 lbs and another 4 lbs...down to 119. I gained a few pounds back on vacation now, but they seem to be coming off qickly. But I still look "a little pregnant" too! That is so frustrating.
I don't think I personally could ever go through this again. I don't know why it had such a huge impact on me and most people seem to get relief! I must just be the odd one! I don't do well being catherized either and that causes a lot more burning too...any test or bladder instillation that uses a cathater just seems to aggrivate me so much.
My husband had given me a book on IC and the mind/body connection and I finally got around to reading it. I haven't finished it quite yet But now I am trying to see how this could be a blessing in disguise and see what I am suppose to learn from it. My physical therapist has been a big help. I also have pelvic floor dysfunction...and she is always on me to take care of myself, eat the right foods and do the right exercises. So, maybe I will learn to take better care of myself than I have ever done before!! There has got to be a silver lining somewhere!!
Am I the only one who had trouble like this with the cystoscopy and hydroextention????
Hugs and best wishes to all!!!

Hello. Well I dont get my hydro till next week, but still a little nervous but I really feel for you. You sound like you have as much luck as I do with this yucky mess. My doctor and nurses keep telling me how easy the hydro is and it is a piece of cake. They make it sound like I will be up and about the next day. I know that everyone is different but all the letters that I have read no one is ready to do anything anytime sooon after. Are my doctors just trying to make me feel better? I guess it helps for the time being but sometimes its nice to know what to expect afterwards. Especially since i wont remember much before and then waking up maybe in alot of pain. I am trying not to let this get the most of me for the next week. But I am really scared about the whole process. I know that I need to do it to actually get a clear picture of what I am dealing with and get some answers. But sometimes it sounds to painful. I want answers though. I have waited so long for someone to tell me that they beleive what I am saying. Lots of deep breathing for me.

Oh jamies,
I really don't want to scare you! Maybe I should not have even written how miserable the hydro made me feel! But, I wish I knew that it could be like this, as I wouldn't have been so surprised...but I guess most people get relief from it and it is not this bad for them. So, chances are really in your favor that it will be OK. I had cooked extra meals to have on hand for my family, so I didn't have to do it when I came home. And since I spent a few days in the hospital I am really glad I was that prepared. And probably most people don't have a problem with anethesia. As my physical therapist told me when she was adjusting me after the procedure, my body reacted to the anesthia like it would to a poison or having eaten loads of chocolate or something else that doesn't react well in my system. But again, I'm probably in the minority.
I am glad I did it because now I have no doubt what is wrong with me! I just wouldn't do it again as a way to get symptom relief. It served its purpose to give a more definite answer to what is wrong with me so they could use the appropriate medications. My doctor would not put someone on Elmiron in less she was sure that it was IC.
Maybe you can get something to take for the anxiety before you go. I know the Xanax really helped with that. I only took .5mg but it really helped! And the doctor and hospital said there was no problem taking it before hand at all. So maybe you could get something to just help you feel calmer right before hand.
You are in my thoughts!! Take good care and many hugs...Good luck! I'm sure you will do fine!

i like to know a little of what may be a head for me it may not be as bad as your situation but i know that it is not going to be as comfortable as the nurses are saying to me.
I was really suprised that my doctor put me on elmiron already Yeah I have all the symtoms of IC and have for sometime now like 6 years but it could be so many other things as you learn with dealing with this that there are so many things with the same symtoms. She wanted me to get the interstim put in before we even talked about the hydro or any kinds of meds. I was like NO WAY. I really like her but was really taken back by this last appointment and her approach on things.
I think that I will feel better as soon as my mom gets here she always understands everything and knows what to do without me even having to say a thing. Unlike my boyfriend you have to write it out for him.
Thanks for all your help.

Hey Amy (Mrs. B)! I see you just joined the boards in March '06. When did you have your first one done? I just had mine on the 16th of March. It took me about five weeks after before I started feeling better (bladder wise), now I am dealing with multiple other symptoms, but at least I haven't had the throbing achey kidney pain for three days nows, so I haven't had to use any pyridium. Of course my bladder still feels like it might start spasming at any time, but hasn't!

I just had my 40th hydrodistention on February 23rd. I am one who also gets nauseated from anesthesia so I usually have a spinal, which doesn't cause as much as a general. I also get nauseated from pain meds so I routinely take a phenergan tablet any time I take a pain pill of any kind. The only drawback is that it does make me a little sleepy so I can't drive.
The vast majority of people having hydrodistentions don't have any lasting problems from it --- and in about 50% of individuals, it helps with symptoms. Hang in there. It's normal to be nervous about any surgical procedure; I still am after 31 years and my 40 hydros.
Sending warm healing thoughts,
Donna
And for pingpong: They don't keep me flat after a spinal (and it is a spinal); as soon as I'm out of recovery and in my regular room for overnight, they adjust the bed with my head up a bit for comfort.

Hey Fig,
I actually was diagnosed back in 2004. So I haven't had a hydro since then.
I know it helped for six months at least. Nothing else has really helped. Elmiron, Elmiron instills, rescue instills ... argh!
I'm glad you're feeling better from yours!
