I was hoping to get reassurance from another ICer. Let me start by giving a brief history. I was born with VUR and had corrective surgery at age 8. I have dealt with reacurring UTI's my whole life. I was diagnosed with IC 6 months ago after being admitted to the ER for passing large chunks of fatty tissue the size of quarters in my urine. My doctor performed a cyctoscope and concluded that the tissue was the lining of my bladder, falling off in clumps. I've been on 600mg of Elmiron ever since.
I have been experiencing something completely different. It started about a month ago. I was playing with my daughters when I had a sudden onset of horrible pains, both in my lower stomach and between my legs. When I went to the bathroom, I was passing dark blood in my urine and it also felt as if I was passing air. The pain and blood lasted for about 20 minutes and went away. Well, about 2 weeks ago I was at work and I got up and walked away from my desk when this horrible pain came back. I ran to the bathroom, which was very hard to do since I was in so much pain. Just like before I started passing blood and air. I tried to call my doctor, only to be told by the nurses that it was no big deal.
I have heard that having blood in your urine can be normal, but I'm scared because it is always associated with horrific pains, and I'm barely able to move. Even with all the things I've been through with my bladder, I've never bleed with it or had a flare up like this.
Does anyone have any advice, or am I just overreacting.

You are not over reacting and if your URO office is not taking this seriously, I would get myself to another URO for an opinion. Obviously something is bleeding in the UT and you need to find out what!
Most IC ers have a little blood in the urine, many only microscopic, but not the large amount you with the pain you are describing.
Hope you get some relief soon Barb, and dont let the nurse, receptionist or anyone put you off.
Hope you will soon be pain free.
Hugs,
Sammie

I'd tell them you want an appt with your uro (or get one with your primary doc) and don't take no for an answer. Just do it.

Most IC ers have a little blood in the urine, many only microscopic The amount of blood you are describing is not normal....get a second opinion. Be careful not to get iron defincient, :grouphug: Describe what your blood looks to a doctor. With my pouch I took pictures of the toilet (with all the blood in it)....my doctor took things a lot more seriously than. :grouphug: :kissing:

You are not over-reacting! You need to see your doctor very soon. Please call and insist upon an appointment ASAP. If you can't get in to see your uro, call your primary care doctor. They may be right and it's nothing serious, but you need to know.

Thank you so much for your replies. I have an appointment in 2 weeks with a new uro. I hate to leave my doctor, he's so caring and sympathetic. Getting through his nurses to him is the hard part. She insisted that I was mistaken and that it must be coming from my female area. I think I know my own body better than a nurse on the phone. I'm kinda used to it though. With the IC, I spent 1 1/2 years in pain and no one knew what was wrong. After awhile you start to feel like they think your lying. I even started to think that maybe it was all in my head. I just praise God for the diagnose. Atleast now I know I'm not crazy, well, maybe not. lol
Thanks Katrina for the advice on the picture, I'll remember that for next time. I'll let you know how things go. Thanks again for everyones support.
