I'm so confused...Everything I've read says exercise helps IC. So I've been following a good, clean diet, been feeling ok, and Monday, I started out the day by walking on my treadmill for 40 min with an incline. Aerobically, I felt fine...was able to work up a decent sweat but still had energy left. However soon after I finished, I noticed my pelvic pain returned with a strong intensity and hasnt let up since. I used to be pretty active prior to IC (ran a half marathon and a few 10ks). Are these days over? I'd like to slowly build up my endurance and start lifting some weights again too. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Walking for an extended period of time causes me to go from NO symptoms to back pain and bladder burning within an hour. Crazy, huh? You'd think that walking would be the best exercise...but it creates problems for many of us! I'm thinking about trying cycling.
I can't use the treadmill (causes instant flare for me), but I LOVE the elliptical trainer and the rowing machine. I'm now up to 35 minutes on the elliptical and 15 minutes rowing. That's a pretty good workout, especially when I add a little strength building and stretching with a personal trainer. (Treated myself to 5 sessions to set up a program that I can do independently.) I've had appts #1+2 and am now up to double what I started with 3 weeks ago...
Hope you find something that works for you!

The treadmill is what i was doing when all of my symptoms started so I'm a bit leary now (3 yrs later). Whether its a problem for me, I dont know because I havent had the nerve to step back on it.
good luck

I have to say that in the beginning of my diagnosis of IC (2 years ago this month) I could not do the treadmill. A good year after taking my meds and following the diet, I was able to do 30 minutes no problem on an incline. Today I am doing 60 minutes daily. I think it takes time to heal and do a little trial and error in a few months from now. Until that time, plain waking for 30 minutes at a moderate pace worked for me. Good luck. liz

Sugar, as I said in my PM to you...if you start out SLOWLY, you can work your way up. 40 mins. at in incline is to much.
For everyone else (again sugar...in my PM to you) start out with 0 (zero) incline and only walk at a 2-3 or 3-4 pace, for only 10-15 mins. Try that, or try the same thing on the EFX which is better for your joints and not as hard on your bladder and inner thighs.
Good luck!

I gave up the tredmill also. Elliptical machines and recumbent bikes (the kind that you pedal out in front of you instead of below you, bigger seats for my seat too lol). I also picked up a tai chi tape and have heard hatha yoga is good. I also have an indoor walking tape, its more like walking in place, some low kicks, knees up etc. that I do here n there. I know most of that tape so I kind of do it w/out the tape now. I can take a nice walk when the weather is good, but I dont take a very fast pace. I also have one of those yoga balls, I use it to do squats, I put it against a wall, then I lean my back on it and roll down to squat then back up.
Whatever exercise you do, definately take it slow, just like what had already been suggested. I hope you find something that works for ya. :)

Using the treadmill for me makes the IC pain worse as well. Most I can do is 15 minutes on a small incline. Walking outside is different. I can do up to 30 minutes before the pain gets to where I have to stop.

Just this week for the very first time I said to my husband, I think the treadmill put me in a flare. I had never noticed that before. This is upsetting because I can't imagine giving that up. Giving up good food is bad enough! But, I have to say that the day this happened I was not feeling good and very fatigued. I have had a rough month. I think there are times when our IC bodies tell us enough is enough!

The treadmill isn't good for me either. I posted previously that I thought exercise was a trigger for me. I slowly started getting back to exercise by doing yoga. I currently go to a gentle intro class once a week and use a video (Yoga Zone) another 1-2 x a week. I try to get to the gym 2x a week and have finally been able to work up to 20 min on the elliptical trainer. I find it less jarring than the treadmill. It probably depends on which program you use though and I don't add extra tension. I also use the treadmill but not on an incline yet. I took baby steps with the elliptical starting at 3 min, then 5, etc. I haven't added in much with weights yet and do mostly the two machines and stretching/yoga.

Hi there, walking on incline on trademill is no no for IC suffered, because most IC suffered also suffered from pelvic floor dyfunction. When walking on incline it through your pelvic floor into abnormal gait. When I started walking on trademill my Doc. said that I should start with walking slowly for 15-20 minute a day and slowly work up to 1 hour a day of flat surface not incline, and I was told not to jog because joging mean I lifted my knee.He also make me a shoe slip for me to wear due to flat feet, and that help a lot.Flat feet and high arch feet always cause problem with back, knee, hip and shinspleen after excersive that what I was told.To correct it, use specialy made slip just for individual feet.
