View Full Version : My hydrodistention last week

Well, my latest hydro (I believe this is 40) is behind me now and I am recovering.

I had some problems this time, but not because of the hydro. It was because of an anesthesiologist who just plain didn't listen! I told him I experience severe nausea from general anesthesia and his response was that he would give me medication so I wouldn't have a problem and that the general would be much easier. He was soooo wrong! After having my procedure on Thursday, I got up to get ready to go home on Friday and was so horribly nauseated I couldn't stand alone. I ended up vomiting all over a nurse who was trying to help and I really felt bad about that, but he said it was okay and I shouldn't worry about it.

I finally came home on Saturday about noon, still feeling pretty rocky --- and still feeling some nausea today.

The good news is that my bladder feels great! and I have decided that I will never, ever, listen to anybody telling me that I don't know my own body! Today is my day to volunteer at our local library and I will have to call and let them know I can't make it.

I'm so grateful for having my excellent urologist and can't say enough good about hospital staff.

Glad to hear that your bladder feels great and that you are on the mend. It's too bad the anesthesiologist didn't listen to you - you would think after 40 hydros that would listen to you.

I hope the nausea goes away soon! Otherwise I am glad to hear that your hydro went well and your bladder feels great! :)

You are an amazing lady -- the idea of having gone through 40 of those procedures makes me a little weak in the knees (even though I know that you have said they are so beneficial for your bladder)!

Donna, glad to hear you are doing better. I react the same way from anesthesia. You are right, some of them just DON'T listen...it kills me. I just had a procedure done in december (birth mark removal) told the anesthisiologist about general anesthesia. Did she listen? NOPE! Got sick as a dog.

-ANYWAY-

I'm glad you are doing better!

Donna,
I am having my first hydro the week of March 20th and that is one of the things I'm nervous about. I too get sick from anesthesia and the last surgery I had on my sinuses I was told they would put something in the IV and I also got sick. Is the Hydro usually day surgery or can you request to stay overnight? I'm just so afraid of the naseua as well. I'd rather stay overnight.
Hope you feel back to normal soon. I'm not sure how long to tell work I'll be out. Any suggestions?

Donna, I agree.....sometimes we have to listen to our bodies! We do indeed know them better than anyone else. I'm sorry you got sick, but I'm glad your bladder feels great and the hydros work so well for you! :woohoo:

Yay!

Oh, Donna! I'm sorry that you threw up on the nurse! Hope the nausea goes away soon. You're absolutely right - we know our bodies better than anyone else! We live in them! Glad your bladder feels better.

I'm one of the very rare people who just don't react well to general anesthesia. Sometimes it's hard for me to explain to anesthesiologists just how bad it can be. I have learned now, however, and if I have to have another hydro, I will make it very clear from the beginning that I absolutely will not have a general. Most people do just fine with general anesthesia --- not sure why I am the "chosen" one.

Donna,
sorry to hear they wouldn't listen to you. Even my uro said today that I know my body better then any lab or any body will ever always listen to my body. Anyone in the medical feild should listen to there patient when it comes to thes type of issues. I'm so sorry you had to go threw that, but very glad to hear that your bladder feels so much better.
no matter how many of those i have done i'm always scared. I thought it would get easier but i don't think it ever does.
Glad to hear your at home and posting again. Take it easy hon give your self time to heal.
prayers on the way for you.

I react yucky to anesthia and have to be given zofram ( I think is what it is)to stop it with anesthia. Sorry you had a bad time this time around.

Donna, I hope you're feeling better soon. That is miserable to be so nauseated, especially since it wasnt necessary. Glad your bladder is feeling better, WOW, 40 hydros, that must be some kind of a record.
Take care,
Bianchi

Donna, feel better soon! I know what you mean...I barfed when I got home after the general too. But I found the next day that the Tylenol 3's they were giving me also made me nauseated, so next time I'll refuse those!

Hope you are doing well again soon!

I have the nausea problem also but Zofran in the IV usually takes care of that problem, but the worst problem is that it makes my heart start doing the cha cha and they think I'm having a heart attack. That's why I'm hesitant to have Botox injections. I think you are so brave to continue having the hydro's. Does this seem to give you the most relief? I've only had two but didn't get much relief.

God Bless,

Donna.. Glad you are on the mend and your bladder is feeling better... I also get very sick with anesthesia.. when I had my Hydro/cysto in Aug 2005 I told the doctor about me getting sick in the past, with that told they decided to put the tube in my throat...I asked not to have anesthesia that way and they said that way they felt better, as they didn't want me to get sick during surgery and aspirate..so maybe next time I will not tell them I get sick afterwards... also they gave me through the IV med's for nausea that made me get a funny feeling in my chest as they put it in...
Donna... I thought you were getting a spinal for anesthesia????

Too bad you couldn't vomit on the anesthesiologist. Maybe that would make him listen to his patients!

OMG PingPong -- that would be ...outstanding!!! :biglaugh:

Donna, I think of you as such a tough cookie, it is strange to imagine you so vulnerable, even though you have made other allusions to it in various ways before. i am lucky in that I can handle anesthesia just fine, but when anything does make me nauseous, I get hysterical (even just on the inside sometimes).

I am so glad your hydros are continuing to serve you well. I was also wondering where you were lately!

Basically, my plan is this: I am recording my experiences with this hydro and anesthesia/nausea/weakness and will take a copy with me to my pre-op visit when I need another hydrodistention, and another copy with me to the OR (even if I have to hide it under my gown) to hand to the anesthesiologist in the holding area. I think that should cover it.

I have to admit I did have some thoughts about various bodily secretions and the anesthesiologist, but I need to remember that he is just a human being, subject to human error --- who just needs to learn to listen a little better to his patients.

Actually, I don't believe it's the medical profession --- just one fairly new anesthesiologist. And I continue to feel better every day.

Glad to hear with each day your getting better !!!!!!!! That is away a nice plus after going threw a hydro/c in the O.R. I only wish i could say they do me that well that fast.... but once i do start to heal i will get at least a good month out of it.
i think the reason it takes me longer is because the removal of hunners. Yet it is so nice to get them off.
sending you hugs and prayers Donna.
