Hi everyone. Heather, over at Spiritual Fitness, has agreed to help us produce a line of teeshirts & hoodies that will help promote interstitial cystitis. I'd like your thoughts on colors, slogans and designs.

Basically, what I was thinking was that we could continue the white & teal color scheme from the Awareness bracelets. So, some possible designs include a white tee (a nice girl tee, rather than the traditional mens tee.. that we can do those too)... with teal print that says "IC Awareness." Or, we could do a soft teal tee which, in white, says IC Awareness.

I'm not sure if we should say IC awareness. What about another short slogan... like "Got IC? Ask me!" or "IC Queen" or "Hope For IC" or something similar. Anyone got any good slogan or color ideas??

I'm open to all ideas!

Jill :)

IC Patients Do It Frequently??? Not really... but I think it's kinda funny!

IC - Hope, Courage & Healing

Do you believe in IC?

????

Honestly, I'm not "into" advertising that I have IC. Maybe I'm still in the denial stage. I'd much prefer calming themes, like butterflies/dragonflies and yoga-ish sayings. Teal isn't really my favorite color either....everything is pink pink pink for me. JMHO.

I like teal....don't like the "hope for IC" sounds a bit awkward if you don't know what IC is...than someone tell you...why would you hope for that? I think simple is best since we want to reach everyone. For that reason I don't mind the IC queen as long as there are IC king, princess, and such...don't want to leave the men or kids out. I do like "got IC, ask me" it gets people talking which is what we need...pluss it is catchy....I'll think more and subscribe to the thread. Looking forward to wearing the clothes! :)
P.S. Tracey you can subscribe to a thread without posting. :) NOt that I am not glad that you did.

Jill - if you need help with designs, that's what I do for a living. (I'm a graphic artist.) I'll be happy to donate some of my time to this, even if I don't want my hoodies to have "IC" on them. ;)

Thanks so much for researching this idea...I am very excited about it!

I live in warm-ups since I work from home, but I'm always running errands and going to my DD's school, so I'd wear these everywhere!

BTW, I hope they can do some capris type pants! It gets hot here in Texas!

Hope For IC is my favorite.

Or something like: You see I have IC

IC is a disease you don't see

Don't be sour because you can't have acid

TRUST that you will have better days
Hope that you will find the TRUTH
TREASURE the good days you have

I am thinking simple, but thats what we simple ppl do lol. I could see a tshirt w/just the letters IC, not in big bold print or anything, if theres a pocket, put it on the pocket, something like that, more than likely, someone's gonna ask about it. Maybe a light teal tshirt and/or a white or black one, for those that prefer something traditional, Ohhh, maybe grey w/darker teal writing? I'd like to see the website somewhere on the shirt too.

VickiB
02-22-2006, 01:42 PM
Hmmm, guess simple minds think alike, because I was thinking the same thing Windwalker posted! Simple can be elegant.

My first thought when I read "Hope for IC" was "I sure didn't hope for my IC!". I hope for world peace, to win when I sit at the blackjack tables, or buy a lottery ticket. Pehaps "Hope for a Cure" with the letters "IC" somewhere would be better?

Whatever is decided, count me in to purchase one and wear it proudly!

I love the idea! I really like blue better than teal, and I remember seeing a Navy Blue Awareness Ribbon for IC on a website somewhere.

I like "Got IC?...Ask Me!" Subtle humor is always best in these situations. I will definatly buy a hoodie and a t-shirt. What about tote bags to tote around all our "neccessities" we need just to go out of our house?? That would be something we could use every day.

Jill,
I found the site that has the navy blue ribbons for IC, among other diseases we share it with.

http://www.personalizedcause.com/sh...ail/c_blue.html

I think it looks really good.

I like the slogans
"IC Angel"
"IC-Don't Suffer In Silence"
"IC-You Are Not In This Alone"

I also thought maybe something spiritual would be nice, but I haven't quite come up with anything yet.

I can't wait until these come out!

I like something simple, such as the "Got IC? Ask me." It's a pretty clear message and I don't mind answering questions about it. Even a simpler - "IC? Ask me." would work for me. Teal is okay with me.

hoping4acure
02-23-2006, 08:17 AM
I like TEAL with white lettering, white clothing gets dirty to easy, and it's not "gym" friendly LOL...

I like windwalker's idea too...grey with teal lettering and something simple like just "IC". I agree with the others "hope for IC" doesn't sound right. The simpler the better. Anything to BIG would be awkward looking.

Cora

I like; IC Awareness

...and to add a bit of humor underneath,
by,
I P Freely and often

or; How long a minute is,
depends on what side of the
bathroom door an IC patient
is on.
then, put a pic of a small friendly toilet here:)
I can add a picture of a friendly toilet if you want to e-mail me...

I also think the tea shirts should be a very pale yellow with dark red lettering that represents the inflammed bladder (IC Awareness)....only we would understand how the colors came to be....

If it's decided to be IC Awareness on top (lettering should be red)
Pink could be on the words; Courage - Hope - Healing

The pale yellow shirts would resemble healthy urine (very pale yellow:)
again, only we would know...white tee's can be second option

Just another thought:)

Katrina
02-23-2006, 08:39 AM
I think when we think about colors we should try to not leave the men out. I doubt many men would be comfortable with pink and I suspect they often prefer darker colors. I like humor...but I don't know how many people want to give too much away on the t shirt itself itself about having a bladder condition....that is why I like the ask me? That way you say the amount your comfortable with.

ChristineW
02-23-2006, 08:43 AM
Plus I personally feel that we should stay away from pink because that is the known breast cancer awareness color...I do think we should stick with the colors of IC..blue. I have a IC pin and other items and they are all navy blue. (Except for the IC Awareness Bracelet from this site which is teal..Im all for teal as well..but I do feel we should keep away from pink.
Just my opinion.. :)

I'm with Katrina with this one. We do have to think about the men. Some people don't want to draw attention to themselves.

ChristineW
02-23-2006, 08:57 AM
After reading everyones opinion I do agree that "Hope for IC" sounds strange, NOW that I think of it that way. I did vote for that one..BUT now I agree it does sound like we are saying you should hope for it...definatley NOT what we are saying.

I am still voting for:
IC- Hope, Courage, Healing
or
IC-Hope, Courage, Faith
OR
IC-Hope, Courage, Strength (My favorite!) We do need all those and have them!
(Perhaps the word SUPPORT can be put somewhere.....)

ALSO I did like some others that were posted:
IC Awareness
IC Angel (I like better than IC Queen)
IC-Dont Suffer in Silence
and something having to do with
"U cant see, IC"

I am so excited about these and cant wait to hear what is the winner of all!!! I do agree a tote bag would be awesome...I have kids so I would use that for sure.

Hey there! Jill, Heather: your idea rocks :)

I'd just like to jump in and give a teenage girl's perspective on what would be cool and fashionable to wear.

Have you guys seen those breast cancer awareness shirts? I saw some really sweet ones at Here's a pic in case you haven't seen 'em:

http://www.pinkribbonshop.com/ProductImages/T_BLACK.GIF

Personally, I think that using that format for IC awareness shirts would be ideal.

First, I like the idea that it's on a black shirt. I wear a lot of black, and I think it's really a color that everyone can look good in. Black would be suitable for both men and women, and it would work well for all skin tones.

I would take the basic design of the above shirt and change the pink ribbon to our color, teal. I think that since we chose teal for the bracelets, it would be best to stick with that color and incorporate it into our awareness gear. Right under the teal ribbon, I would write out "IC-Network.com" in small, teal print.

Also, the lycra-blend style of the shirt is cute and trendy for girls. We could also have a regular one for the guys.

Overall, I think the best thing about this kind of shirt is that it's subtle and casual. People would see the teal rirbbon and go, "hey, what's the ribbon stand for?" Then each person could explain as much about IC as they are comfortable describing.

Well, that's my two cents. I will definetely be keeping tabs on this awesome project!

windwalker
02-23-2006, 10:27 AM
I like the ribbon on the shirt too!

Katrina
02-23-2006, 10:31 AM
I think that works for breast cancer because they are way ahead in promoting compared to IC....most peole know what the pink ribbon means......we are still at stage where very few have even heard of IC. It is nice but we are just not there yet.

PenguinK
02-23-2006, 01:18 PM
Cora- I am on the floor laughing! I actually scared my family with the "Roar" I let out. :biglaugh: I love your ideas.

All of the other ideas sound great too. I really like the idea of Black. It's true, almost everyone looks good in black. Not everyone lost weight due to this disease, I personally have gained 25lbs. and wear black and navy constantly.

I really think we should stick with the Navy Blue color that has been pretty much "assigned" to IC on other sites, it would be less confusing.

I also like the "U can't see IC" idea. There is another site that has "Invisible diseases Suck!" on their shirts, and I like the idea of bringing awareness to invisible diseases as opposed the obvious ones, but I really don't like the word "suck" so I haven't gotten one yet.

THey also have "Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired", which I have actually been saying for YEARS!!! Go figure!

Just some ideas.

I like the idea of a black t-shirt with the ribbon. I think people would ask more because it's not confusing or intimidating. I also love wearing black tshirts and that would be so easy to throw on. If it's not humorous I think it should be simple like the ribbon or just the letters IC. Maybe someone could design a pretty t-shirt that doesn't say anything about IC on it but that can be sold to raise money for IC research. That's probably what I like the most. I don't think that there should only be one option, maybe people can order ahead of time and then based on those orders they can be sent to the tshirt making place. Everyone is sooo different and everyone's comfort levels differ. There should a range of options like something that is:
inspirational
educational
humorous
thought provoking
just pretty and blank for research fundraising (that would be something that family and friends could also buy and wear without attracting unwanted attention)

For the research fundraising thing, if you could get a tshirt wholesale and printed for under $10 and sell it for $25 (something that I think is quite reasonable for a donation and you're still getting something for it) that would be a $15 donation to IC research with each tshirt!!! If we sold around 65 tshirt we would have already raised a $1000 dollars for research and the possiblities go on and on. This would raise more money because friends and family could buy them and wear them to show their support. Just an idea....

I'm with Katrina on this one too. We can't leave out the men, our children who are suffering. There isn't many men here, but I'm sure most of us has boyfriends, or husband who will be willing to ware the shirts so would some of children to get the word out for us who are suffering. I don't think the it would be a waste of time to order some to see how they sale if all goes well with the children and the men the ICN could order some more.
What ever you decide in the slongan will work for me as long as it isn't too girly so i can get some hoodies for my children to ware i know my three kids love hoodies. I personally will really like the tee's

My first thought was to use black as an addition to white. I was also thinking of just a ribbon on the front in teal with "hope for a cure" underneath in small letters and maybe in small letters "IC awareness" on the sleeve.

Please don't use lycra, it does not flatter those of us who are heavy and I'd hate to be excluded.

Kara Isabel
02-24-2006, 02:46 PM
Hmmm.......How about a black shirt w/ an aqua logo?? Teal is a bit dark! Aqua is like water.........the toilet!! lol

There are some cute, funny and original ideas, but if you really want to grab people's attention, go for the shock factor. IC w/ a toilet underneath,.

LOL.....

And please don't get offended anyone, we do have to live in our reality whether we like it or not!!

I think we should stay with the teal for our lettering or ribbon, or for whatever is decided. Teal could be like our signature color, standing for IC, the way pink is for breast cancer. I do like the ribbon idea with IC - Hoping for a Cure under it. I personally could also go for the funny ones or the off the wall ones. Heck I tell everyone about my IC and what it is. I have to admit that the male cook at work didn't really want to hear about it, but when he didn't tell me all the ingredients he put in something he cooked and it caused me a terrible flare, he heard about IC in detail.lol

From reading over these messages, it seems like the three main catagories people like are: subtly funny, inspirational, or simple.
It'd be like...

FUNNY
IC? Ask me!
or
U can't see IC
or
Got IC?

INSPIRATIONAL
IC Awareness
or
IC-Hope, Courage, Strength
or
IC-Dont Suffer in Silence

SIMPLE
teal ribbon design

I was thinking we could have all of the above in different styles...

LYRICA SHIRT ("babydoll" style)
CLASSIC SHIRT (this one would be great for women who aren't as comfortable in lyrca, and also for men)
HOODIE (this one would also work for men)

So... would that be alright? Maybe pick one from each catagory? Maybe start a poll?

Personally, I'm still voting for the teal and black color scheme, although teal and white would also work for me. Maybe another poll to pick color scheme?

Oh, BTW, guess what I found surfing the net...

Maybe we should have an IC awareness thong! LOL I hate thongs but that would be hilarious :biglaugh:

I was talking to my hubby over the weekend and asked him when we get the
t-shirts, will he wear one? and he said of course I would.

Soooooo....we do have to think about OTHERS wearing the clothing, not just us IC'rs. He's an electrician, and he goes to the gym every day, so, he knows and is known by a ton of people to get the word out.

His company also sponsor's organizations like this one.

What about unravel the mistery of IC with a ball of yarn as the logo. It is kinda like the ribbon but makes more sence to me being this is a puzzle. Or a thumbprint,IC there is no match.Or IC putting out the flames. Also people don't know what IC stands for I know Interstitial cystitis is a long word to put on a tee shirt but maybe on the back Interstitial cystitis awarness would be good. Or maybe in a smaller print. I don't know If I am keen on the white either, I think blue is a good color to use maybe shades of blue or bluegreen.Dark blue with the light blue for the logo and font.

Speaking about polos being better than t-shirts. What about polos and tanks tops, which aren't too skimpy that can be layered with other shirts. I bought this adorable new style of polo this weekend, which has six buttons down the front instead of just three. The sleeves were also a little puffed. I don't know if it is against the rules to post the thread???

I get tired of t-shirts too because I wear them at home so much to be comfortable and they are cheap (medical bills rule! LOL! We have to laugh because it doesn't help to cry...) So if I buy something new I want it to be fun.

^That one up there. I'd guess that's the logo.

I dunno how you could incorporate that on to a shirt, though... but you're pretty creative, so maybe you could think of something cool.

Loro,
If you have the image saved on your computer, you go to www.tinypic.com and upload it there and they will give you the code to insert in the IMG thingy that comes up when you want to insert a picture.

:woohoo: I think the shirt idea is is wonderful! Not only to get people aware of IC but then maybe when in public after you have used the bathroom for the 5th time in 30mins they will understand. Also I have an idea why not have a vote on the sayings we like most and print the top 3 or 4 so there is varierty. Heck I'd wear a different IC shirt everyday just to get the word out. LOL. But We need to stick to one color so when people see that color they know I.C. like when you see pink you think breast cancer awarness. And I don't think for all of the things I have seeen for awarness causes I havent seen white and teal. Personally I dont care if you all decide on pee yellow (sorry bad example) but these shirts are such a good idea and really need to be done. Please email me with any info on the shirts I will buy some and make anyone who knows me and my medical issue buy one! Justmelissa1976@aol.com

I love the idea of keeping it simple. I also am all for darker colored shirts, whatever their style. White T-shirts, in particular, can tend to be very see-through. Plus, I'm a very messy person, so I always end up with something on me when I wear white! Not to mention that white washes me out because I'm so pale.

What a lot of great ideas...I myself like the simple ones and of course the humor ones. Color I don't really care cause I wear anything. I like the idea of the website somewhere on the shirt like on the top of the back or something. And of course just don't have small sizes cause us bigger gals want to show off our shirts as well and hide our IC bellies lol

Can I throw in my two cents worth? I feel that for a fundraising tee shirt that using the ICN Logo (in varying colors) on the front of the tee and on the back the exact words we live by HOPE-SUPPORT-ENCOUARGEMENT-EMPOWERMENT on the flip side would be good. It is our ICN mantra, why not share it, and welcome the opportunity to educate.
I along with my dad used to be the proud owners of Banana Graphics which sold and designed tees, so I still have some contacts from the old days, and still get trade magagzines, if that can help.
Here are a couple of things that should be kept in mind......
single color screen prints are much cheaper to have made, each added color will increase the cost of the shirt by as much as 25% since it is then a two or three step screen print.
Also platsisol screening is less expensive but does not wear as well as a direct split ink screen which is the most durable.
Always use at least a medium weight tee with a cotton-poly blend. As a printer we liked the Beefy T which is made by Hanes and can be very inexpensive in bulk it is easy to work with, holds up the best, and keeps its shape in the wash.
I would also reccomend that a direct screen print be used so that the shirts can be put in the dryer, if we go with a cheaper plastisol print (the kind of transfer that feels plastic) it cant be put in the dryer and they just wont last nearly as long.
Also speaking of Polos the cost in comparison to a basic tee is about 3X the cost wholesale, which would have to be passed on to our buyers so to make a profit.
Sorry to ramble on, but this was my familys business for 14 years and I guess the old tee shirt saleswoman in me is coming out!!!!
Also I like the "got IC" idea, but that idea is copywritten and using the concept without permission from the coppywrite holder is a felony, and the ICN could be sued for copywrite infringement (and it happens all the time, this is a serious business since it has made then alot of money espacially).
So any slogan or design has to be copywrite free or we have to have written permission and we should copywrite our design also. (Ican help with that if need be).

A good quality tee with a single color process should cost the ICN about 3-8 dollars ea depending on how many you have made. Plus the cost of the setup and design which should be a one time fee.
Here are a couple of ideas in my head, other than the one I spoke of before:
This one would look similair to an eye chart;
IC (in bold print)
ASK ME (bold print underneath)
www.ic-network.com (small print as last line)

I would wear a V-neck tee shirt as opposed to the standard rounded collar. I also am not comfortable wearing very fitted shirts, I prefer looser ones. I also will not wear things with big logos. I liked someone's idea about having things on the sleeves. Gray with teal would look nice, or even navy with teal. Yellow is hard color for many people to wear- when I wear yellow it makes looks ill. While I do like black, if it is a Tee shirt most likely it will be worn in the hot weather, and wearing black in the heat will make you hotter. I like Unravel the Mystery of IC. I also like using the web site on the shirt, that way if someone is interested they can go to our site and find out about IC.

These are all such wonderful ideas! Just wanted to share a few:

What about a rising sun that says "IC the light" or "IC the sun" -- I always think of that Helen Keller quote, "If you look at the sun you cannot see the shadows" when I am trying to be optimistic in my pain. Or even, "IC a better day".

Also, I saw mention of butterflies in other posts. When I created www.art4ic.com I wanted to use a butterfly because I thought of it as emerging from pain but ended up with the hopeful starfish (if you know the story) since I couldn't find the right image...I'm just throwing this out there because I love butterflies (especially embroidered) but they aren't really a man's t-shirt thing!

Don't forget to order plus sizes! I am a plus size girl and am willing to pay those few extra dollars to get a polo or t-shirt in a plus size like 2XL. I bring this up because you so often see screen printed shirts in S-XL bcause of the extra cost of the plus shirts. I am so sedentary now due to discomfort and can't imagine I am alone in needing those 'plush' sizes. :-)

Angelina Jolie has the Latin phrase on her belly "Quod me nutrit me destruit" which means "What nourishes me also destroys me" I guess I have somewhat related my IC to that phrase. While I don't believe that IC has destroyed me personally, it certainly has destroyed my bladder, and eating the wrong foods will make this condition worse. What nourishes me also destroys me.

I think "IC Awareness" is an Okay slogan. Personally I don't like the "Got IC? Ask me" slogan, but I do like the idea of a short catchy slogan other than "IC Awareness" A butterfly would be cute. I think the "IC=2p" is very cute an d catchy. It makes me laugh, and I think that is really important for people who have this disease. :bunny:

How about a picture of a tombstone with the words ,"I told you I was sick!" written across it! :biglaugh: That would be the front, and on the back, we could have, "IC..It can't kill me, but your words can!" :biglaugh: (Just kidding!) I like the idea of the V-necks also. But whatever you choose, I will buy some. But I would also like to make sure that there are plus sizes and men's sizes available. The butterfly would be fine for us ladies, but men would not want that. That is why I think we kind of need to stick with a gender neutral design.

That is a very good point: men would not be comfortable with the butterfly. Scratch that.

Actually, it would be great to have some input from actual men with IC...

I'm a little late checking out this thread, but about the butterfly: it's the symbol for lupus, because of the "butterfly" rash that appears across the nose and cheeks of some people with lupus. I looked at the Lupus Foundation's website and saw that they have a fundraiser selling Current checks with a butterfly design - proceeds from the check sales go to lupus research or whatever. I like something to do with a puzzle. How about a design using jigsaw puzzle pieces or something like that?

Multi-colored puzzle pieces are the symbol for Autism Awareness. A navy blue ribbon is the sign for IC, as is the ICA symbol with a person inside a box with the last piece of the "puzzle" being attached.

Personally, I think that if we want to raise awarness by selling products, we should model ourselves after what I believe is the most succesful awarness campaign in America. I am talking about the breast cancer awareness campaign. It is just amazing how many breast cancer awareness products there are, and how much money these products have raised for the cause. I think we should strive towards that, even if we don't have the resources for that yet.

For example, I think one of the things that make breast cancer awareness clothing items popular is that you don't need to have breast cancer to wear them. My concern is that if we use along the lines of "Got IC? Ask me!", only people that actually have IC will feel comfortable wearing it. That would leave out our friends, families, spouses, etc.
My concern with the humorous slogans is similiar. While I use self-deprecating humor a lot when I describe IC to people, I'm not sure if our friends and families would be comfortable in shirts like that. If it's something like "IC=2P", I couldn't really picture a non-ICer wearing it.

Beyond that, I say we should start out by picking a color and sticking to it, like breast cancer did with light pink. If we want to keep on using teal, then that would be easy, because it would match our bracelets.
If we want to start using dark blue, like that other website has listed for IC, then we should stick to that from now on. In that case, we should consider updating the bracelets to match that color scheme.

On a similar note, I don't think we will be able to use the ICA's logo (the puzzle) due to copyright issues. It belongs to them, so it could very well be illegal for Jill to utilize it to gain profit.

Still waiting for input from the guys with IC out there...

EDIT: Hey, Laura D's website just gave me a cool idea for what our symbol could be! We could use a pear! How cool would that be: a cute little pear on a teal or dark blue shirt :D

Very good point!!!!!!!! I agree we will want something our love ones can wear too and feel comfortable doing so....granted a lot of my loved ones don't know a lot about IC so when thinking about that something that does get awareness of what it is started helps.
I like hope for a cure with the website.

I still say IC=2p is too humourous to take serious. But yeah I do believe they might log on and check it out. Would also help those out who know abt IC but dont know where to find help, so the addy is REALLY helpful.

Yeah, Katrina, I was wondering the same thing.

I guess the "Spiritual Fitness" line and the "IC Awareness" line are different? Like, they're both made by Spiritual Fitness, but one is just the regular fitness clothing and the other is the awareness line?

Actually, I'm kinda confused now. They're not the same thing, are they?

I also love the "hope for a cure" line with the website below. I'm so excited about this that I can't wait to order some for me.Do you have a timeline as to when they will be available? I'm pretty sure the IC Awareness clothes and Spiritual Fitness stuff are 2 different lines?? I got my Spiritual Fitness stuff today (LUV IT :) ) and I was under the impression that it was "the comfy clothing" for bad bladder days; especially since the pieces have slogans like "Relax" and "Just Breathe" on them to remind us flare-ers to take it easy.

I did however save money to buy the actual IC Awareness stuff when it comes out -- I want stuff from both lines, especially since I know my purchases support the ICN. My mom is sending me a check for my upcoming birthday, and I plan to put some of the money away to buy IC-Wear :)

Jill, do you have an update on the IC Awareness shirts/keychains/other suggestions?

i like v-neck t-shirts and the teal butterfly would be nice on black or gray. i don't wear a lot of colors. If i wear green, yellow etc I usually look ill. Black, gray and white are colors everyone can wear. A teal ribbon with a small teal butterfly on the front of the shirt at the left top would be nice. Small website underneath the picture .This way it would be nice enough to wear to work. I don't like large prints on the back.
