Hello,
My name is Cassandra and my 8yr old daughter is having symtoms of IC. She has had 4 bladder infections and then 3 episodes that myself and the Doc. thought were badder infections cause of the symts. but when they cultured her urine, it was normal. I have heard that IC can be heriditary(sp?) and have such a fear now. I am supposed to meet w/ a uro and go over all her symt. w/ them and talk about whats going on w/ her. She always takes about a back ache on and off and when she says "it hurts to pee mom, I probebley need to pee in a cup agian huh?" it makes me so nervous. Her Doc she had all her life never worried about it and just shook it off. We started Kaiser in June of 2005 and she has not been seen for anything yet untill 4 days ago. She had these symtoms and had a low grade fever too and so when I took her in to Docs. he did a dip and said it might be an infection cause of some white cells and some puss? Not sure exactly what made him think it was an infection, (I was busy comforting my daughter who was in so much pain in her back and stomach) He did say she had all the "classic" symt. and started her on Bactrim. He than said we need to culture her urine to make sure we had her on the right antiboitics for this infection. That was 4 days ago, and then they left a message this morning to say to stop the antibotics, cause she does not have an infection.?? He said if she still had symtoms of pain and discomfort, to call and discuss it w/ him. I just left a message w/ him and am waiting for a call back. Also, when I saw the other Doc 4 days ago, he said we should take a look at her kidney and bladder sometime because she has had so many infections and some that had mimiced infections to make sure everything is o.k. What does this all mean? Her other doc did not seem to be worried, even when I said I had IC. But this Doc seems worried ESPECIALLY because I HAVE IC.? Why are these docs worried and not the one who saw her all her life? Any input would be appreciated!! Also, I have Fibromyalgia and have heard this could be hereditary too? I have three daughters and a son, I am getting worried?
Thank you all so much and God Bless, Cassandra

Cassandra, I'm sorry to hear that you think your daughter may have IC. I know that's a tough one to carry. How long have her "UTI's" been going on? I would definitely push the doctors for some answers here. Poor little girl, I remember having this pain when I was her age. I really hope that it's not IC!

I agree with Karma I would find a dr. that will run some tests to find out what is going on with your daughter. You and your daughter is in my thoughts and prayers.

I absolutely agree that you need to find out exactly what's going on with her. That said, it's not unusual for little girls to have urinary tract problems. I'm not sure what causes it, but my niece's little girl had some really bad problems for a little over a year and was treated by a urologist. She's now grown and hasn't had any problems for at least 15 years now. My niece was adopted so there's no possibility it could be a genetic link to me.

And both of my sons had to have minor surgical procedures because they were born with tiny urethras. They are both adults now and haven't had further problems.

It's always possible that it could be IC, but there are also other things that could be the problem. I know you're worried.

Warm hugs,
Donna

I've read some internet stuff about obstructions that aren't necessarily IC. I worry about my daughter - one time it was hurting her to pee, but that passed. I will teach her before she gets sexually active (hope that won't be for years..) to take cranberry juice/pills or d-mannose to stop any e-coli infections (might be worth it if that is what is infecting your daughter as a preventative).

Cassandra,
I would encourage you to find a pediatric urologist. I'm not sure where you live, but any city with a children's hospital will have one. My six year old son has voiding disfunction (not related to IC) and he has a ped. urologist at Boston Children's. Good luck. I hope this resolves quickly for your daughter.

I hope your daughter can get a correct diagnosis and get some treatment. I can't imagine what this disease would be like for an 8 year old child. I will pray for you and your daughter.

Good Luck and Best Wishes

My daughter was going through some of the symptoms that you have mentioned and I too was very worried. However it turned out to be the bathoils she received as a Christmas gift. Make sure she stays away from anything perfumy there are a couple of things that both my daughter and myself have to be careful of ie:toilet paper we both use kleenex, laundry detergent and definately NO fabric softner! Hope these suggestions help!

She is going to have a ultra sound of her bladder and Kidneys and blood work done too. I will keep you all informed. Thanks and keep us in your prayers please, Cassandra

My daughter had her ultrasound yesterday, March 1, and they said it takes around a week to get the report to her Doc. She has not been feeling well. Her lower back and kidney areas have been really bad for her. Who knows, maybe she just had a random UTI that was a doosey and it is just taking long for her to recover? They cultured her urine 3 times and all 3 times they came out negative!! One time her reg. urine dip in office showed elivated white blood cells and some puss, but when they cultured, NOTHING! I am so frustrated. She also has been running low grad fevers and is so wiped out. All she wants to do is sleep and lay down. I am actually very worried. This is NOT like my baby girl. She normally is a very active 8 yr old. They want to do numerous tests if this test comes back positive. They even said they are going to test her for some forms of Cancer!! I hate not knowing whats wrong!:( I hope it is just like a nasty virus or maybe her amune system is just low or something. I can use all the prayers I can get for her PLEASE!!!! My husband said not to worry because they are just being thourough and that they have to say all the bad things it could be just to cover themselves. I'm sure he is right. I just gave it to The Lord and asked for peace and of coarse to get all the test back w/ NOTHING WRONG!!:) I will let you all know, Thanks and God Bless, Cassandra

Dear Cassandra - I hope all is OK with your daughter. I know how you feel. My daughter is constantly tired w headaches and stomaches. I'm having her tested again for a bunch of things and it is worrysome. Do you think your daughter's cultures are accurate? There has been so much discussion on the boards about this. Why would there be pus and white cells without something causing it? I think you are doing the right thing by having all these tests though or else it keeps nagging you. We will keep track and pray for you and your daughter. PeeVee.

Well, if there's anything good about IC, it does give us more compassion and understanding for those others who are having similar symptoms....I, too, am paranoid about my 2 daughters and my granddaughter maybe having IC. let's hope for all of our sakes that WE are the only sufferers in our families' gene pool. Keep us posted.

I started showing symptoms of IC when I was four years old. I had several ongoing uti, bladder and kidney infections during a 3 year period. I was not properly diagnosed until I was 23 and was told then that I'd probably had it my whole life. No one else in my family has it. My doctors told me that most doctors do not understand that IC can come at an early age so they tend to find other reasons for the problems and overlook IC. If your child is having the symptoms of IC tell the doctor to look into the possiblity thoroughly and if that doesn't work find a doctor that will look into the possiblities.

Once agian I would like to thank all of you who have been praying for my daughter and sending warm thoughts to us! Well, we did get the tests back from her ultrasound and :woohoo: :woohoo: it was negitive!!!!!!! They did an ultra sound on her bladder and kidneys and they said everything looked fine! I am sooooooooo happy. Now, the Doc. said she might want to do some blood work next and just check up on a few things that can cause some of her symntoms. She is so much better, thank God, but she is not her self yet. I was thinking maybe she is anemic(sp?) and that might be causing her fatigue and tiredness? She says her back still hurts and her tummy seems to be hurting her alot still. I am going to ask if her doc thinks she needs to see a uro or not. I am happy about the results, don't get me wrong, but now I am just wondering what is still causing some of these symt. I am going to make an appt. for next week to talk to the Doc about her symt. she is still having and see whats going on. Thanks agian for the support and I am defianatly going to remind her about me and my IC and Fibro and see what she thinks. I will keep you updated, sorry this update was late. :) Thanks Erika for the info, I will keep it in mind when I met w/ her Doc! :)
Take care and God Bless, Cassandra
