I had a cytoscopy today, plue urodynamics (I already posted in the urodynamics section.) They used a lot of numbing gel and it was pretty much a painfree experience. I got to totally visualize my bladder insides in color on a TV. I know that IC is diagnosed by hydrodistention, but I am wondering if any ICers out there who have had a cytoscopy alone had inflammation and redness etc show up JUST on the cytoscopy alone. My bladder is in very healthy shape with no evidence of any IC at all right nowbased on cystoscopy.
Can you please tell me if you have IC and you can see evidence with cytoscopy alone?
Also, I have MAJOR burning when I pee now and light blood which I think is normal. They gave me one antibiotic there at the office and said it would be in my system for 24 hours and ward off any infection. I hope that is true and adequate. Did anybody have just one pill given to avoid infection?
Also, could I take uristat (sp?) or something for the burning now? They didn't say, I don't have any peridium, but could get something over the counter for relief. It is so painful to pee right now. I have the procedure done this morning.

Most people diagnosed with IC, sometimes even SEVERE IC, end up with a healthy looking bladder on a regular cystoscopy (no hydro). This is very common and it is often why patients are sent away without help; if the doctor doesn't know this fact then many are left out in the cold, as they say.
I think it's fine to take a Uristat now to help with the pain.

I was on an antiobiotic for a week (before and during my hydro) and I still got a UTI. It took a few tries to find the right antibioitic, so yes, it is possible to have a UTI following this procedure even though you only had a one time dose. liz

Hum, should I call the dr. tomorrow and ask for more antibiotic to be safe, or should I just wait and see? Right now I have burning and pressure (unreal pressure) which is no doubt from the trauma of the procedure(s). I am not sure I will even know if it is a UTI since the pressure is so bad from the procedure and all. I wonder how much time I should give it before being concerned I might have an infection versus just the pain leftover from the procedure.

I have had cystos look normal, but hydro doesn't. I would also take some d-mannose in case it might help dislodge an infection just incase antibiotic not working (which then would mean you need a culture). Even a 2 minute cysto left me in agony for days.

I never had a hydro, but on my in-office cysto the uro could see some mild glomerations. She told me that that was abnormal and most of the time an IC bladder looks totally normal after an in office cysto. They are used to rule out other causes of bladder symptoms, like tumors or cancer. My cysto wasn't bad but my urodynamics was the worst thing I experienced. I drank lots of blueberry juice and took d-mannose afterwards, and did not get an infection. I was worried about that, because of all the catheters.

I have read about DMannose before, but never gave it much thought. Now I am wondering if I should try it. Is there any risk of it giving me more of a flare than I am in now from the procedure? What is it and where can I get it? Whole foods??

I just read some online and it says it DMannose works against E.Coli, but I know most cath infections are caused by Enteroccocus infections?
Any thoughts on this? Also, if it is a sugar couldn't that irritate the bladder and go against the IC diet?

That is untrue. 80% of all UTIs are from E.coli. Enterococcus counts for a very small portion of UTIs. Most people with IC can eat sugar without a problem. I can't and I can still take d-mannose. Only a very small portion of it get absorbed, the rest comes out in the urine, that is how it works! I think that you could get it at Whole Foods. I get mine online.

If you're not feeling better by tomorrow morning, my suggestion would be to telephone your urologist for advice. It's not unusual to have some pain with urination for a day or two following a cysto. It's not really a very good idea to self medicate following a procedure --- it's best to work with your medical professional.
And, yes, it's entirely possible to have IC and have the bladder look completely normal and healthy during a cystoscopy in the doctor's office; I know mine did --- but the IC shows when the bladder is distended under anesthesia.

I just had a in office cysto like 2 mths ago and they too gave me just one antibiotic to take right before they did it so I wouldnt get a UTI, and it did work for me. I know what you mean about how bad it hurts to pee its was the worst. I had mine done in the morning too and it hurt the whole day but when I woke up the next say I was fine. I hope you are feeling better....and hopefully you will feel a lot better tomorrow.

When the hydro is done they do a biopsy. That is how IC is diagnosed.
What you are feeling is normal for just having a procedure. Call your doctor and ask what you can take .
