I received a resque instillation on wednesday of Marcaine, Heparin, Sodium Bicarbonate and Sodium Cloride. I was feeling fine before I got the instillation, but my uro wanted to teach me how to do them myself for times when I have a flare. Well since i got the instillation I have been in a massive flare. Is this normal when you get a instillation and how long does it last. Thanks for listening to me whine

I had my first instillation last week and was in bed in pain for a few days! I ended up with a uti and ended up on antibiotics. I had my second one yesterday and was totally dreading it. Today has not been bad, not having much of a problem at all.

Hang in there. I hope they get better.

steelerfan - I've had approximately 30 heparin instills and never had a pain problem, usually they're quite soothing. I've had them not work, but never pain. Sometimes the cathing can cause urethral discomfort for a day or so. Other times, the process can in advertently cause a UTI, but it sounds like it happened so quickly. Keeping a pain journal for your uro can help. Hope you feel better soon.

HI and welcome :welcome: , my husband is a HUGE Steeler Fan , so next Sunday is a Holiday at our home!!
I do instills at least once a week, for about three years I guess, and I have been doing them myself for most of that time. Here are some things you may already know and be doing, but they helped me, first use the smallest catheter you can get, I use a 8 french, but started with a 6 french, use alot of lidocaine gel after cleansing with betadine VERY carefully (No UTI's) apply the lidocaine and let it set in for a few minutes. Add it as a lube to the cath it self too. Take long slow deep breaths, and relax your muscles, if you are tense or spasming really bad the cath can shoot right out!!
If you go to insert the cath , but feel pain, stop, and wait and repeat the above then try.
The key is relaxing (which is difficult when something is being pushed in your urethrea) but it really does help. Ans for me it helped to do them myself, I knew when to stop or slow down and I learned ALOT about how my body works, as did my 12 year old daughter who helped me when I was learning to do my instills. I am sure she is the ONLY girl in her school who can cath a person :biglaugh: , not sure if that is a good thing or not yet! But it was a bonding moment. :loco:
What are you instilling? Maybe one of the things is an irritant to you. IC bladders can be so d**m picky.
Well I hope I helped some and didnt make you more confused.
Again Welcome and for you and my Hubby Danny

GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I've never had a problem with these instills, but in some rare cases people have reacted badly. However, if the problem persists, see your doctor -- it's always possible to get a UTI after insertion of a catheter, even if your doc gave you an antibiotic after the procedure. Good luck :grouphug: and hope you feel better!
