Hi! I've noticed and embarrassing problem after my instills, body odor. My husband can still smell it even when I can't. He can still smell it even after I shower. Anybody else have this prob? If so, is there anything we can do to get rid of it, or does it just have to wear off? Please advise.

Yes is normal to have the ordor. The medicine comes out your poors. They say it can last up to 72 hours. Mine last about 40 hours.
They say it smells like garlic. my husband say it smells like clam juice.
I try to stay away from people during this time.
But sometimes I have no choice. so I alway say sorry I stink :biglaugh:

72 HRS! Wow! I am sitting here mentally going over every person I have ever been around during my "stinky phase". From now on I'll be going into voluntary seclusion. Kind of like how anceint peoples used to put women into menstral huts at their time of the month. :) Seriously, for the most part, I can't personally smell it, but my husband can, and normally, he can't smell anything. (Case in point, I was a closet smoker for the first year of after we married, and even if I didn't have time to shower after I sneaked and smoked, he still never smelled it. )

Amy - that's only if you get DMSO instills. The heparin instills leaves no odor - at least for me. Take your husband out for a good garlicy Italian meal -- then you'll BOTH smell like garlic!

Rosesitty is right -- the odor only comes from DMSO instills. When DMSO is instilled into the bladder, a little bit is absorbed into your system, and you excrete it through your lungs and pores. So, your breath ends up smelly and well, your BO does too.
When I tried these, my husband said I smelled like cooked corn with a little garlic in it. He actually LIKED the smell... yes, he is indeed weird. It was strong enough that when he came home from work he could smell it as soon as he came in the door, but since he liked it, he didn't care... he even let me climb all over him and sit in his lap when I smelled like that. I was embarrassed anyway, so we'd have things like garlic bread or something for dinner, so like rosesitty said, we both stank to high heaven ;)
Interestingly, my CAT liked it too. He'd lay on my lap, and he'd always lick my water glass where I'd been drinking out of it, as if he liked the taste of my saliva after the instills. We'd stop him in case it was bad for him, but he's weird too!!!
In 2001, I was doing my DMSO treatments and had to go right to work after my treatment. It was so embarassing. I smelled really bad -- like garlic. I went back to work 8 times like this. Glad those days are over, but miss working :(

I would go back to work after my DMSO treatments too and my co-workers would have a scented candle lit awaiting my return.
My co-workers were really nice and ignored it until I mentioned and explained. By that time I was sick it was going to be a miracle if I could keep working... Now that I think back several years, they were so kind and sweet -- bless them.

It is best to schedule your appointments on Friday if at all possible. Then you have time to detox and start smelling sweet again as well as recover from any painful effects. I also believe in letting the body rest, accept the treatment and heal. This seems like a luxury when working, but it is important and maybe one area where I could have improved.

I have DMSO treatments right now weekly and the smell is awful. My husband like
some of yours says I smell like corn too...Which I guess is better than smelling
like garlic...I am embarrassed when I go to work the next day for I know I stink but
my co-workers are very nice about it..One of my close friends as a joke put a ear of
corn and holders in my mailbox as a joke on day...I wish there was a way we could
get rid of the smell but like you I shower and spray alot of perfume and it doesn't
really help..I know the DMSO is the only one that has that odor though, I asked
about other instillations and my dr. said they do not smell...That is very good advice
to go on a Friday so you have time to unstink but sometimes I have functions on
the weekend and I would rather stink at work or bowling than be at a fancy
restaurant like that..Oh well what are ya gonna do..??

When I started treatments, the smell was pretty bad. It seems to wear off sooner now. I always cook something with garlic for dinner that night, and usually have my appointment on the way home from school or on a day I don't have to go anywhere.

I could always tell if I smelled like DMSO because I could taste it. The odor for me goes away overnight.

Remember, DMSO is NOT part of a rescue instillation as it can provoke more symptoms and bladder spasms. A rescue is soothing, not irritating. So, you could ask them not to use the DMSO at all.
Check out the chapter on rescue instillations in the ICN Patient Handbook.

When I was getting the DMSO treatments, I smelled like garlic. I tried to get these done late in the afternoon, this way I could take a shower at night and the next morning, this way only my family would smell me -- ( I know I had to go to work one day after I had this done, and people left me alone all day long!! They didn't want anything to do with me.

DMSO did nothing to make me smell when I had them done years ago and I've recently started rescue treatments thus far and both times I have tasted something that I thought I was imagining and then thought no, the Dr. didn't tell me. Well my Dr. didn't tell me about any side effects cause according to him, it's contained ONLY in the bladder. Well BCG made me sick and that was given via the bladder but that aside DMSO gave me NO side effects of smell and rescue treatments have made me have a foul taste. My husband would NEVER tell me I was smelling even if I were so I don't really know if my scent has changed but I can taste it in my mouth. I'm sure glad I saw the post cause I would never know that was a side effect and like I lot of what I go through sometimes I've wondered if I was imagining only to find out I really wasn't. OK, just going on and rambling here. PEACE

I found when I was told to hold the dmso for an hour during my first instill I did smell and I also smelled it when I peed for two weeks. During my second my nurse said to hold it for 15 minutes only. This time I hardly smelled anything. It only stunk when I peed it out. So far I've had one DMSO, one heparin and lido, and one DMSO and Heparin. I haven't gotten any better so far nor worse.
