Dr. Moldwin's book stated that for PFD that sometimes a muscle relaxer would assist in getting things quieted down. What one worked the best for you?
Thanks!

The 5 mg Valiums/diazepams work great for me, they work relatively quickly and last several hours but do make me a tad drowsy and loopy.

Hyoscyamine works for me.

A lot of IC patients are prescribed 2mg of Valium, three times per day during Physical Therapy - then they are weaned down after they start feeling better.
I suggest that you consult with your healthcare provider if you believe that the information above may be helpful; your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate treatment regimen for you.

Kara, do you take 5 mg a day or the 5 mg tablet 3x per day? My doc prescribe 5 mg. tablet once per day - and I'm confused.
Thanks.

Hi!
Cripey..I responded to this and it didn't show up!! LOL
No, Usually, I take the 5 mg once a day, either in the middle of the day or at night. Seems like my insides like to spasm in the evening for some reason. If I'm have a really rough day I've taken one in the morning and one at night. Or I've even been known to break the 5's in half and split it into 2 doses. Some days I don't need them at all! I love those days!! :)
Are the 5's lasting long enough for you? I know they have a 10 mg, but I've never taken that much at once.
hugs,
Kara

Kara - my IC also tends to be worse in the late afternoon/early evening for some reason. I wake up feeling a little bit better and then as the day progresses start to feeling cruddy. Maybe I'll break a 5 mg. into two parts and take it that way.
Thanks!

I am not on any muscle relaxers, but after reading the responses, I am getting angerer at my URO, sent me to PT with nothing. I can't tell you how bad I suffered to the point of complete bed rest after each session. I have alot of knowledge after reading everyone's post that when I go back to see the URO I will have a complete list of stuff to talk about. My pain always gets worse around 3:00 until I go to bed. This web site is awesome.

Kara - I'm taking 1/2 of a 5 mg. Valium in the late am and then 5 mg. in the late evening. I've only been on the warm baths/muscle relaxer treatment for 4 days. I took Flexeril for two (left over from something else) and then Valium for two days. For me, the Flexeril made me groggier than the Valium by far. How long before you had any change in symptomology? I'm SO patient -- I think I should be well after four days! :-)
littlemyrn - Dr. Moldwin's book has been very comprehensive about all the treatments that are available and the possible other problems that can go along with IC. I've also been frustrated at my uro. I'm the one who has to keep coming to her with suggestions and possible meds to try. It's like I'M the doctor and she's my assistant to write prescriptions! I want her to develop a treatment plan for me! Maybe it's time for another uro!

I noticed a different the first week taking the valiums, I still have that occasional surprising *spasm* that immobilizes me, but that is usually after I do some sort of phyically intense, like carrying something heavy! But the valiums definately take the edge off and my doctor told me that the benzo family works better for PFD than the newer drugs. I guess all docs have their own opinion. I see that alot of docs prescribe 2 mg 3x a day, but my script is for 5mg 1-2 times a day. Got lucky, I guess!! lol, easier to break those and make them last on days when you don't need them as badly.
I love my warm baths too!!!!! I break out my candles and favorite pictures and relax!
The only downside to the benzos is that they are habit forming and you run the chance of building a tolerance and having to increase dosage.
Hope you feel better!!!!

I normally take Soma 4x a day, with Zanaflex at night...but we are trying a new regimine because I was having lots of all over body spasms ---Zanaflex 4x a day (no more Soma)...I found that this has settled down the PFD, the bladder spasms, and the myofascial pain spasms...so, all in all, a very, very good thing.

I took Flexeril for two days (I had it left over from something else) and then I've been on Valium since Monday. Just an FYI - I notice I'm not as sleepy/rummy with the Valium as I was on the Flexeril, and that's something I've taken for years off and on.
