how much does the average bladder hold (one without IC)? how much does a bladder with IC hold? can you bladder hold alot and you still have IC? or does your bladder have to hold very little. just wondering. thanks

:) Hi, I know mine holds 500cc, awake and under aenastesia, it's the same amount, its got my doctor mystified, because normally a bladder would hold alot more if under.
Some Icers have normal bladder volumes, but most have very small bladders.
But to answer your question, yes you can definately have ic, and still have a normal bladder volume.

Normal healthy bladder capacity is around 500cc (about one pint) while awake and about double that under anesthesia. It is possible to have normal, or greater than normal, bladder capacity and still have IC.

:) Donna, have you ever heard of anybody who has the same amount of bladdervolume while awake and under aenastesia?? my uro said he could not stretch my bladder beyond 500cc, he thought it was strange because the bladder can normally hold double the amount while awake, mine is the same, awake or under.

I haven't had a hydrodistention but I know i have a bladder capacity of at least 1000ml because I have held that much urine. I imagine if my bladder was stretched it wouldn't go too much further than that. Yes, you can have a large bladder capacity and still have IC. The only time I pee really small amounts and have terrible frequency is when I have a UTI or having a bad flare (which feels just like a UTI). Thankfully, I haven't had one for quite a while now.

I have never heard of anyone whose bladder won't stretch at all under anesthesia, but that's absolutely not saying that it can't happen. Maybe somebody else here can answer that question?
