View Full Version : Finally Finished my Quilt

For those of you who have heard me rabbiting on about this quilt I was making for my nephew and his Canadian bride, I have finally finished.
http://community.webshots.com/user/gypsyrose52
The quilt is a maple leaf design where the blocks were made with Australiana prints. The florals are waratha, flannel flowers, gum leaves and flowers, banksia, grevillia, kangaroo paw and wattle which is Australia's floral emblem.
There are also kangaroos, echinda, platypus, cockatoos, wombats and crocodiles.
The execution is not of a very good standard but it was made with love for the couple and I spent many hours thinking about them and their future - wishing them much happiness.
I gave it to them on Christmas day and they seemed very pleased with the gift. Giving quilts isn't a particularly Australian tradition but from what I can gather it is in Canada and the US.
Mai told me that she has always wanted one and now that they have just bought their own home in Carlton, Melbourne, she has a place to use it. I am very pleased with the outcome.

:) Rosalie, I have replied about your quilt some where else, can't remember where, but anyway your quilt is beautiful, you must be very proud of your self.

I am indeed Martha. It's the first quilt I have designed albeit ob a common theme. And, unlike my usual practice, I actually planned it out on paper. I am prone to jumping in head first into a project without the foggiest notion of what I am doing!
Now I want to make some for the family members who are in longterm relationships. They never had the formal "wedding" gift and have lasted longer than some of those who got married.

:) I know what you mean, I tend to do the same thing, I have all these books about different crafts, but I never look at any instructions, I learn better when I see some one do it, I just catch on really quickly then.

What a beautiful quilt with so much thought put into it! I love it! My daughter's each have a baby quilt that someone made for them when they were born & I just love them. My grandma has crocheted for many decades & I have about 20 afghans that she has made. I don't use them, though because I don't want them to get torn up. They mean a lot to me & I'm sure this quilt will mean a lot to your nephew also.

Liz, your name Quiltz suggest you are a quilter. Is that right?

Hi Rosalie,
I knew you would catch that!! LOL .... Yes I am and I'm wondering if we have "met" before somewhere online. Do you belong to any of the groups, ie Yahoo quilters groups?
I actually have been feeling so rotten than I haven't been up to my machine and fabrics since before Christmas (diagnosed IC in December). I'm just finally (thank heaven) getting up to speed to finish my latest project and now, of course, I'm way behind!! At least I can give my heating pad a rest now. And most important I can enjoy playing again!!

Liz, I don't belong to any quilters groups although, I was in contact with a Canadian one when researching the wedding quilt.
Hmmm. sounds interesting though, I might have a look in.
