Hi everyone,
I just wanted to post for those of you wondering about the TENS unit or worried to try it. I got mine last week and I LOVE it. Currently my PT has me on at least one hour a day and these last few days I have had to use it 2 to 3 times due to the holiday stress I think, plus the physical therapy they are doing seems to flare my symptoms for a day or so.
It's kind of a massaging tingly feeling. I know it will help on car trips etc.
Happy Holidays!

My sister is a physical therapist and she gave me a hand held elec. stim unit to use at home and showed me where to put the electrodes and the right settings etc. well let me tell you~~~~~~~~~~~~ I accidentally turned it up too far and I felt a shock of lightening straight on my urethra so I know I am hitting the correct nerves in the sacral area, I am wondering if anybody else has tried one of these units????????

It sounds like the same thing I am using, just have to be careful to slowly turn it up to a comfortable level for you to where it is more a tingle than electrical shocks. It gets uncomfortable or painful if up to high. You may need a higher setting later if your body gets used to the lower setting.
Hope this helps, it is really helping me to use it. Doesn't take the pain away but preoccupies it for a little while.
Happy New Year!

I love my tens too. Like you Tina it does not take the pain away but helps to keep the bladder preoccupied. What is an electric stim? I'm not sure if I know of it or not.

I'm wanting to try it i go see my uro monday and I hope to talk about the unit again then. I've did my research on the unit and so far I've not found anything bad about it. I think it will be something safe to try without nasty side effects. wish me luck.

I really loved my TENS today after being really wound up because my husband backed into my car. I felt a flare coming on and I put on the TENS and tried to be calm. I think it worked!

I was just checking in to getting one today. My PT said they could get one but need a script from my doctor. I looked in Moldwins book and suggests using an internal electode??? It is used vaginally??? He only suggest using it extrenally only if that is the only way it can be tolerated???
So how do you guys you use yours. I think the thought of putting one on my lower back and pelvic area sounds relieving, internally a little frightening??? :toilet:

I use it in my pelvic area between my belly button and my pubic hair. I agree that a vaginal one sounds scary!

I also have one that I use on my hip and back -- don't know how long I will be able to keep it, as workmans comp doesn't want to pay for it, but the doctors and the company who is handling it is trying to get the Texas Board of Insurance to pay for it. If not, I will ask my doctor to give me a prescription for one and see if I can get one on my own with my insurance co. since I have other problems.

kimchi,
I have four and I place them on my lower back like this:
X X
X X
then I criss cross the lead wires - this helps me a lot. I tried it on the front first and it just irritated my bladder but when I put them on my lower back it helped a lot.
Hope you find a way that helps you!

I will have to try it on my back. When I used them on the front, I too had a bad flare. I never thought of that.

I place one of them right over the bladder and the other right above that one. Putting them on my back seems to make it worse. Bladder feels like it is being hit with small vibrations.

My PT just ordered my Tens Unit and I can't wait to get it. He said and I see potty woman does, that I can use it 24/7!!
How often do you have to replace the electrode pads?
Has anyone tried wearing one while holding and instill? I wondered if it would increase the benefits?

There seem to be a million kinds on the INternet. Can anyone give some guidance on which ones to consider?

The electrode pads I use (The throw away kind) last about 1 year. I reuse them. Don't throw them away. The wire is replaced every 6 months. Good luck with it. I think it does help a little so I can hold the heparin longer.
