Is anyone out there taking Cystoprotek, but also have seafood allergy? I have heard that some folks are able to take it with no problem. Just wondering, as I am about to try it (sitting in my doctor's waiting room) because I want to stop Elmiron. I can use Betadyne with no problem (has iodine so shouldn't be used if you have shellfish allergy). Just wondering!
Diana.
I am allergic to both fish & shellfish. I took 1/2 the regular dose of Cystoprotek one time & got a tremendous migraine & bladder flare out of it. My fish & shellfish allergies are at level "mild" per my allergist, I don't know what it would have been like if I had a a higher level of allergy to it...
Maybe someone will come along with a different answer. Good luck.

I have severe seafood allergies and was nervous about trying Cystoprotek or Glucosamine Chondroitin for that reason. I was accidentally "tricked" into trying Glucosamine Chondriotin by a guy selling Mona Vie, who told me it was "just fruit juice." After my initial stunned reaction when I read the list of ingredients (too late!) I waited and had no bad reaction. A few days later I rubbed half a Glucosamine Chondriotin tablet on my tongue and waited. Still no reaction, so I started taking Cystoprotek.
So far the only thing I notice is perhaps some itchy eye symptoms (which might be seasonal allergies too) but I don't think I'm having any other side effects.
If anyone is allergic to seafood, I would advise to test very carefully and proceed with caution, but I was told that Glucosamine Chondriotin is make with the shells, not the meat of the seafood and is generally safe for many people with seafood allergies. Your milage may vary, so test carefully!

The word I got was that if you're allergic to shell fish, you shouldn't take Cystoprotek.

Donna, you said you got word that people with seafood allergies shouldn't take Cystoprotek... I haven't had a chance to consult with any professionals about this. Could you please tell me where you heard this from? I am very curious since I have started taking it. Thanks! -Michele

The Cystotprotek product information states, "Patients allergic to eggs, soy, shellfish or olive oil should consult their doctor before taking the product."

I did some more research... I know that myy specific seafood allergy is to SHRIMP (I have not been tested on other seafoods) and I found this study that says in summary: "CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that glucosamine supplements from specific manufacturers do not contain clinically relevant levels of shrimp allergen and therefore appear to pose no threat to shrimp-allergic individuals. Again, I would encourage people to do as Donna and the label says and consult your doctor, but I think I am able to tolerate Cystoprotek OK.
