View Full Version : Anyone take acid reflux meds?
Does anyone take the following and how have they been with your ic?
prilosec OTC, aciphex, nexium, protonix, prevacid, zantac, pepcid? Or anything else of this type.
Thank you so much for your help. I am having acid reflux and think it may have caused the worse flare I have had in years. GI doc thinks I should try one of these but I am terrifed the med will make my urgency/frequency even worse.
Help!!!

Some ICers actually take antacids to help relieve IC symptoms. I've been thinking about giving Prilosec a try; next time I see my doctor I'll ask him what he thinks.

I take 40 mg of Nexium 2 x a day for very bad GERD. I love it, but my body sure knows if I forget a dose.

I take aciphex 2x per day and it really helps my reflux..if i cut down to once a day i feel it start to bother me....the nexium did not work for me because for some reason i can not tolerate any pill with a plastic like coating

Prilosec helps my IC, Nexium helped my GERD more but I am not sure if it helped my IC at all (it id did I think I would still be fighting to get my insurence to let me take it!) Most GERD meds are helpful to IC...I don't know of any common problems with any of them...we all are different though so start with small doses anytime. Good luck!

I take Prilosec. I haven't noticed any increase in my symptoms since I've been taking it, although, I have yet to control my IC symptoms...so, it's hard to tell.
Hope you get relief soon!

Prilosec two times a day. I also take bentyl, and Levsin for stomach spasams as needed. Dipentum at breakfast and dinner for Chronic inflammatory Colitis I also use Gaviscon for GERD when all else fails. Hope this helps. I agree with the rising of the bed and don't lay down after eating. If you still have problems see the Doc. Also don't eat foods high is aciddicly(spelling).
Thank you so much for all your responses and ideas. The only good news with having this is I won't gain any weight this holiday!

My family doctor suggested that I try OTC medication for Acid Reflux. She suggested with Pepcid AC 25 mg once daily OR Zantac 150mg twice daily. So I called the pharmacy where I get my prescriptions filled and explained to them what my doctor said. They suggested I start out trying the PEPCID AC first then if those don't work, then try the Zantac. I bought a bottle of PEPCID AC (50 pills) and I take 1 first thing in the morning and wait about 10 minutes (it says to take 10-60 minutes before eating or drinking anything that is going to bother you) before drinking my coffee and it really does help. I don't get the acid reflux like I was getting. So give the Pepcid AC a try.

Thanks Kim. I did try that stuff. Helped my reflux but flared my ic big time. I am glad it works for you!
Take care

Most Acid Reflux meds do help IC but some definatly more than others...and I don't know of many that take Pepcid or Zantac. I know that Prilosec OTC helped both my Acid Reflux and IC and I recall not being too keen on trying Pepcid for some reason. (can't remember what that was sorry...too long ago)
None the less...very glad something is helping you!!! Please keep us updated on how it effects your IC as well.

I take a daily dose of Nexium for my reflux. works great for that, but don't see any affect on the IC. I take also take pepcid every now and then, especially if I've eaten dinner later than usual, or eaten something that usually irritates the reflux. I've read that pepcid is a type of antihistamine and that it is useful for treating IC. I don't know if it helps or not but it doesn't seem to make it worse. The absolute worse trigger for me is stress, though. I'd guess the treatment that works the best for you would be the one that addresses your most common flare trigger. Good luck!
