Hi everyone. I have been scheduled to have a cysto/hydro done next Monday (in the afternoon). I just wanted to get an idea of your experience with recovery times. Has anyone had the procedure and then went to work the next day? Thanks for your input!

To give you a little background, I am 45 and have had a combo of IC and OAB for a number of years now and it seems to have gotten particularly worse this year, where I finally went to a uro and got diagonosed. I had a hysterectomy in 2001, so I'm not sure if that helped or hindered, although I know I was already feeling the symptoms before then. After several trials and combos of meds, I am currently on potassium citrate, which has reduced the acid in my urine and has given me a good deal of relief from the burning sensation. I am also taking Enablex, which also helps the OAB a little. ;)

I had mine in 1998, but I will think back to the lovely experience. I didn't go to work next day because my uro automatically sends everyone home with a foley cath for 2 or 3 days just to rest the bladder. I remember taking it easy for a week. But was still relatively active since I had two young children at the time. Was a bit flared for the first few days. I think that by the 7th day or so I felt fine. In fact I felt great. The procedure gave me a wonderful symptom free period of 4 or 5 months! I hope you get a nice boost out of your, too.

HI D,
I was back to my pre-cysto/hydro state within a few days. And had some lovely pictures to decorate my bathroom with. (Not really, but it was nice to finally have a diagnosis.) You might be a little flared (esp if they are doing a biopsy) & might be tired or a little sore from the anesthesia.

They recommended I take 2-3 days afterwards to recover before going back to work. I had it Wednesday afternoon & I went back to work the next Monday. I might have been ok for Friday, but I'm a teacher, stand & move around a lot & can't just go to the bathroom when I want, so the extra days off were a good idea.

Hope it goes well for you!

I had the hydro/cysto/biopsy done 2 years ago and had no problem(s) afterwards. It was a bit uncomfortable to urinate for a couple of hours afterwards--other than that, no problems. I had the procedure done (it took about an hour), stayed in recovery for about an hour, came home, slept off the anesthesia, then went to dinner with my family. While I dont work, I can still say that I would have been fine going back to work the following day.

stay well

I think it would be a good idea for you to plan to take two or three days off after the procedure. I have had many hydrodistentions and I always plan several days to rest.

It always takes me 2-3 days to recover.

Hi D, :)

I had my third cysto & hydro yesterday and am back at work today! I always go back pretty much straight away as I never get much pain. It always takes me a while before I can urinate properly and that hurts a bit, but besides that I think I'm pretty lucky. I get around 5-6 months of relief. I hope it just continues to work for me.

Hope it works for you as well.

I had the cystoscopy / hydro dono on Nov 23rd 2005. I had a laporscopy to look for endometriosis on the same day as well. For the first 4 days I was on 5-8 5/325 percoset a day. I didn't feel too much badder pain or urgency, mostly just pain from laporscopy. When I recoved from the lap I took the percoset down to 2 day. The bladder pain and urgencey were horrilbe. I was crying all the time. I didn't want to take more percoset because I didn't have much left. After about 5 days of that I began taking 4 percoset a day. It did help, but not really enough. This awful llasted about 3 weeks and I couldn't get anything for the pain. I was diagnosed with IC and they scraped away a small amount of stage 1 (lowest on 4 scale) of endo.

Though I do think instillations might be helpful in the future. I am especially interested in the heparin or elmerion combined with anegsic / anti-inflamatory ones becuase I have had a mini-gasteric bypass (stomach stapling) and I don't think I will absorp the emilorn. However, I can't see ever doing them without assurance of a proper amount pain meds in I have a flare like that again.

Has anyone else had a bad flare after this? It seems like most people recover in a few days. I think part of the problem may be because I had to do a bowel prep beforehad for the lap. I had done one for another unesccessary test - colonoscopy and it caused a flare (not as bad as this one) for 2 weeks afterward.

When I had my last hydro/cysto done I was down for several weeks. This is because I developed an UTI afterwards. Even taking antibotics I got a bad one. Have you been tested for that? I hope you start feeling better soon.

I though of that too. They checked several times and found nothing. I almost wonder if the doctor did something wrong, but there is no way to know for sure.
