I got a telephone call from a cousin earlier this evening to tell me that my last aunt passed away this week. She was my mother's sister and the last of her siblings. My father's siblings are now all gone as well.

I haven't seen this aunt for at least fifteen years, but I do have some fond memories of her. I now have addresses for some of my cousins I haven't seen since I was a child and I am looking forward to getting to know them again.

:grouphug: I am so sorry for your loss. All of my family elders are gone now, too. Besides sorrow, there are so many emotions that come along with the end of a generation. Each year during the holidays I get out old photographs taken during family gatherings when I was younger and spend a little time thinking about those who are no longer with us. I don't do this in sorrow, but as a way of fondly remembering and being thankful for those who were in my life.

I hope you find joy in reuniting with your cousins. I reconnected with some of mine and now, aside from being treasured family members, count them among my closest friends. We are cousins by birth, friends by choice.

I did reconnect with some of my cousins on my father's side of the family several years ago --- I exchange daily emails with one of them and letters with several others.

We always depended on the elders to keep the families in touch --- guess I'm one of the "elders" now so best get busy. I've been thinking about contacting them and doing an annual newsletter.
