View Full Version : Who prescribes Elavil?
Hi, I was just wondering for most of you on Elavil who prescribed it? Your family doc, or the one treating you for IC- like urologist or gyno?
I know I've been feeling pretty stressed and was thinking of going back on a ssri that I took before through my regular doc. Which my urologist said yeah, that's fine, and my regular doc would have to prescribe for me. That's fine because it would be like zoloft or something for stress/anxiety.
But what about the Elavil? Technically it's an old antidepression med, but if we wanted to try it for IC pain, not for depression, do regular docs even know about it or prescribe it for pain?
Thanks for the info

Its interesting that you would ask this guestion. I was taking 3 elavils at bedtime. I just got back from my uro. and he is wanting to also take 2 in the morning. If it makes me to tired we will do something else. We use it for pain not for depression. It is a muscle relaxer. I also get the thrill of dring DMSO starting Monday. Hope this helps you.

Pj77 - yes my family dr is very familiar with it being used in low doses for chronic pain purposes.
I'm actually completing a study for it next week. I believe the university hospital is going to write my prescription for it (urology dept),otherwise, my family dr will. It has helped tremendously with my pain, which was quite severe before I started - but has not done much of anything for frequency and pressure (except I usually can sleep through the night and not have to get up as much).
Bigred - you take three elavils at bedtime? What dose are you on?
It is normal for it to make you tired at first, or when you first increase the dosage. For me this went away after a few days, each time my dosage was increased.

I got elavil from my uro (since it is one of the common treatments for IC) but the uros usually wont prescribe SSRis. I got prozac from my internist.

I have been on Elavil for at least 15 years. I have had every type of doctor prescribe it depending on who I was seeing at the time. Never had a problem.

I did the increase of 25mg which is in the morning along with 75 mg. at night. I was tired at first but decieded if I am busy I can handle it. So I worked in the morning and took a rest in the afternoon. I will add the other 25 mg tablet later in the week and will see how that goes.
