View Full Version : IC + steriods?
Has anyone tried steriods for IC? A girl I know from the UK IC boards told me when she was diagnosed 9 years ago she was put on prednisolone for a few months and it zapped her bladder into being better. Since then she has two flare ups a year which only last a week or two, and are easily calmed down by anti inflammatries or a few days on the steriods again.
Can GP (general practitioner)prescribe steriods, or just urologist/specialists?

I may be wrong but I thought steriods were not IC friendly... I would do some research and see what you can find out.. I haven't heard of any one taking them for IC pain.
hopefully some one will have the answers for you.

PREDNISOLONE (www.bnf.org - I would sign up and visit for the full information, there is pages of it)
Indications: suppression of inflammatory and allergic disorders; inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, immunosuppression, rheumatic disease,
Cautions: adrenal suppression and infection, children and adolescents (growth retardation possibly irreversible), elderly (close supervision required particularly on long-term treatment); frequent monitoring required if history of tuberculosis (or X-ray changes), hypertension, recent myocardial infarction (rupture reported), congestive heart failure, liver failure, renal impairment, diabetes mellitus including family history, osteoporosis (post-menopausal women at special risk), glaucoma (including family history), corneal perforation, severe affective disorders (particularly if history of steroid-induced psychosis), epilepsy, peptic ulcer, hypothyroidism, history of steroid myopathy; pregnancy and breast-feeding
Contra-indications: systemic infection (unless specific antimicrobial therapy given); avoid live virus vaccines in those receiving immunosuppressive doses (serum antibody response diminished)
Side-effects: minimised by using lowest effective dose for minimum period possible;
gastro-intestinal effects include dyspepsia, peptic ulceration (with perforation), abdominal distension, acute pancreatitis, oesophageal ulceration and candidiasis; musculoskeletal effects include proximal myopathy, osteoporosis, vertebral and long bone fractures, avascular osteonecrosis, tendon rupture; endocrine effects include adrenal suppression, menstrual irregularities and amenorrhoea, Cushing's syndrome (with high doses, usually reversible on withdrawal), hirsutism, weight gain, negative nitrogen and calcium balance, increased appetite; increased susceptibility to and severity of infection; neuropsychiatric effects include euphoria, psychological dependence, depression, insomnia, increased intracranial pressure with papilloedema in children (usually after withdrawal), psychosis and aggravation of schizophrenia, aggravation of epilepsy; ophthalmic effects include glaucoma, papilloedema, posterior subcapsular cataracts, corneal or scleral thinning and exacerbation of ophthalmic viral or fungal disease; other side-effects include impaired healing, skin atrophy, bruising, striae, telangiectasia, acne, myocardial rupture following recent myocardial infarction, fluid and electrolyte disturbance, leucocytosis, hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylaxis), thromboembolism, nausea, malaise, hiccups
Dose:
by mouth, initially, up to 10–20 mg daily (severe disease, up to 60 mg daily), preferably taken in the morning after breakfast; can often be reduced within a few days but may need to be continued for several weeks or months
Maintenance, usual range, 2.5–15 mg daily, but higher doses may be needed; cushingoid side-effects increasingly likely with doses above 7.5 mg daily
By intramuscular injection, prednisolone acetate, 25–100 mg once or twice weekly

I have had steroids instilled many times and it is always soothing. I also took steroids for a severe allergic reaction. It did help, but the side effects of swelling, etc., which can accompany steroid therapy was the bad thing and I was weaned off the steroids as soon as the allergic reaction was settled down.

Hello! I am currently on Prednisone for my colitis. I have no idea if it's helping my bladder or not, honestly as it was pretty calm before taking it. But I do know it hasn't made it worse or anything. But Donna is so right, I am getting tired of the side-effects puffiness, water-weight gain (to the point of one day can fit into jeans, next day can't, it's horrible) but I have another few weeks to go. Ugh. I have been on them since the middle of July, and we discovered I am one who has to wean off excruciatingly slowwwwww..... Started at 20mg...just now at 2.5......
But back to my point, it hasn't made bladder worse or anything!!!
Hugs!
