View Full Version : New Addiction....

It appears to me and my family members, well, mostly hubby, that I have a new addiction.
Hi, my name is Tracey and I am addicted to new towels and new sheets, the sheets must be at least a 400 thread count or higher (preferable). I just ordered new stuff for me and hubby out of our wedding gifts funds, as we needed new towels. The ones I have are hand me downs from hand me downs. I have never had new towels all my own. So, I am on a towel binge now. Looking everywhere to get my fix, I just got 3 new sets from Penney's that I ordered, and that's not enough. I also got a set for the wedding and went out and bought the other color in that particular brand/collection that I'd wanted. Oh and I got the matching bath rugs from the same collection, one in each of the colors. So that's a total of 5 new sets... I.....must......have......more...... I have even just this week purchased two more bath towels from Kmart. It's nuts. And the sheets, well, good thing those are pricey, keeps me at bay, but I am now in search of a dealer for them as well.
Any ideas on how to break this?? LMAO!!!! :help:
Hugs!!

:)
I don't know how to break it. I don't have the towel part of the addiction, but I do have the sheet part -- my husband started it by buying me some 400 tc sheets for my birthday one year and now I refuse to sleep on anything less. It's so expensive, but soooo worth it ;)

Give yourself a restraining order that you can not be within 150 feet of Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Linens and Things. Hee-Hee

Oh, Tracey, do be careful! Like you, I started with the soft stuff....beautiful Egyptian cotton towels and high thread count sheets. But it didn't stop there. Antique linens crept into my collection. Then I made the move into the "hard stuff"......collecting china (so many beautiful, enticing patterns!) and crystal. I couldn't get enough. Hubby tried an intervention and threatened if I brought home one more new set of china, he would pick one to get rid of. That didn't stop me. When my closets and cupboards were bulging and couldn't hold another thing, I added storage units like china cabinets to my home. I would do almost anything to feed my addiction. Even developing IC couldn't stop me. How much better a bland grilled chicken breast tasted when served on a beautiful plate. And spring water in a gorgeous glass is so much sweeter! Now, here I am in agony. We're newly retired, ready to move and down-size. Family circumstances have delayed our move, but it is merely a delay. I am still faced with cleaning out and parting with much of my beloved collection. Now I have no choice but to pay the piper and recover from my habit. How I wish I had nipped this in the bud and not allowed it to grow into a full-blown domestic products addiction! Be very very careful, Tracey! You can control this before it takes control of you!!! :biglaugh:

Oh thank you all for your suggestions, I will definitely apply to myself for that restraining order....but since I live in the land of nothing (nearest Penney's a 35 min drive and that's the only department store within 200 miles....), there's this darn black box, that is enabling my addiction, the computer. It seemed so innocent at first, I'd just window shop, dream a bit, etc. Then my Mom-in-law urged me to register for our recenct reception/open house we had to celebrate the marriage back in June. That's where it all began.
I started adding things to my registries, and adding more...on one I had 3-4 sets of sheets, and towels, oh the beautiful towels...lots of them too. It was like fantasy shopping come true! But then, I began to believe I NEEDED these things, must have them, my birthright to own 600 tc sheets!! And duvet covers and shams, and blankets...I am afraid it even became more ingrained in when I stayed for an extended weekend in Royal Oak (Detroit area) with my inlaws... (they have $$) and mom-in-law had the most fabulous sheets I have ever slept on...I started to devise a plan to steal them...one sheet, pillow case at a time....mwahhhahahahahaha (evil, maniacal laughter here). But that was no good, she'd notice.... So, must get my own, but how? I am still trying to devise that plan...we do have one more gift card left to Bed, Bath and Beyond....I could just MAYBE take a peek at some of their sheets...what would one look hurt right???
Oh Annie, I am afraid it's too late to save me. I have spotted my hubby's antique bedroom furniture at his parent's place in his old room and mom made the mistake of telling me they were all his to take......I am now currently shopping for the little lovlies to put on the BEAUTIFUL mirrored vanity, oh it's heavenly something I have always wanted, but could never afford...right there under my nose...I am shopping for it, and we don't even have it here yet...I fear I am doomed. My mom-in-law created a monster who also is now in the throw of a full-blown domestic products addiction....she's a Master Decorator Afficianado Extrodinaire, and I have fallen prey to the seductive call of the housewares department at Marshall Field's.......
I type this like you too Annie, in hopes of reaching out and saving one person from this nightmare, if I can save only one, I have done my job....Hmmmm, did I "hear" china??????

China...hmmmmm. Oh how I want china. It's a good thing I don't have any room to put all the things this shopper could buy. What I think I will do is go to antique shops and pick up a piece or two...maybe three...better still four...or more. YIKES...Thanks alot...now you've gone and done it. You have created a China Monster. :evilsmile Please  for me.

I hesitate to tell you, but my addiction is shopping for shoes --- I love shoes and I don't even want to count how many pairs I have. I especially like the clunky ones, like my new Dansko's.
Donna
For sheets and towels, the store to go is Kohls!!! Most of the time things are on sale. In fact, I do not buy unless it is on sale! Plus, they have a linens/white sale often! We just bought wonderful sheets there! They had the best prices.

OMG Tracey, this is too funny. But I've seen your mother-in-laws house and since then I've been on a "have to have" binge too. Thanks Barb. It was likely a good thing that "the Store" was CLOSED. Heck I'd still be there.
As for your addiction, spend, spend, spend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing more comfy then getting out of the bath/shower to a soft towel. And sheets, oh ya gotta have the best there too. Problem is I never want to get out of bed. I have a feddish for blankets. Like how many does one need. Apparently in my house one for each day of the week.
What the furniture isn't home yet ? Ok, you distract Barb and I'll go in and grab it. Up the stairs, sharp left and go straight.

While I was giving Tracey suggestions I should have intervened for myself--My name is Barb and I am addicted to shoes and Longaberger baskets. I am like Donna, I am into the clunky clog ones, like Dansko, Land's End, Clarks, and Birkenstock. I have a sub addiction to colored clogs for work(which are in a holding pattern right now)and have pretty much every color of the rainbow of those. ICK which reminds me of my scrub collection where I have one for every single occasion, like pink ribbons for breast cancer and the Grinch for Christmas, and nearly every Disney character. And the baskets well, I have been on the wagon since Lindsey was born but man if I ever go back to work I may get the itch to buy another beautiful overpriced basket.

Ok I have to admit I am a sucker for shoes as well, I will buy every pair of clearnce shoes in my size, I don;t care what color or style. If they mark them down to the bar minimun I will buy them. i do the same with kids shoes. OK I confessed. I will be packing now as I know the shoe police will be knocking on the door soon to take me away. Maybe if I play stupid They may not notice the thousands of show boxes in my house. :biglaugh:

Oh my gosh, just when I thought I couldn't get any lower, I too, have a....shoe addiction! There I am out of the closet! Whew. Feels kinda good to get that off my chest. I have no idea why one needs a million pairs of black shoes, but I do. I too love clearance racks, I too don't care what color or style, a shoe is a shoe and clearanced out even better - I must admit I have even bought ones that were slightly too big, but they were soooo cute!! Oh thanks Donna, you helped me to come clean! But, now I fear I must heed the call of the Payless, which is right next to the Penney's Home Store in the little mall that is 35 min away....I have been trying to restrain my urges, since my mom and I are going to the Penney's next week to shop for.....boots for her for winter...I must have one pair of shoes, just one little bitty pair of shoes...I will buy first and justify later! LMAO!!!
Oh and I fell off the wagon I never got fully on, I hit Kmart tonight after work and stuck some towels in lay-away, and bought another set, but they were really cheap, not great ones, but figured they'd be easier to wrap my hair in then the big, soft, fluffy heavy ones....Sounds good at least doesn't it?? Hubby didn't buy it. Drag.
Oh yes, Jen, the root of all decorating evil is my mom-in-law....I really like the plan, we could have that stuff out and loaded up in no time! Heck, she's trying to get her garage cleaned out, so probably would help us move his stuff out gladly!! And the stuff in the garage they keep trying to get us to take, lol.
Oh there is no end to this. I am happy to know, I am not alone. We all have our addictions, and it's nice to have people who understand...hee hee even if we all encourage ourselves to buy buy buy!!! And when you run out of cash...charge it!! hee hee hee hee hee!!!!!!
Yes Sharon, see the pretty china....you gotta have some, just one small piece, but then, you just HAVE to have the other one by it, it would feel lonely.....
Babs, you are a genius, the shoe boxes would make PERFECT furniture, then all one has to do is buy some slip-covers....hmmmm slip covers.......sounds like fun, maybe I ought to check into them.... Baskets?? I love baskets too.....

I have learned how to turn those heavy shoe boxes inside out, which makes lovely packing boxes for mailing things --- or just storing them in my sewing room for whenever I might want to mail something. :) Have any of you found the Merrell brand clogs? I have some and they are wonderful!
And --- we are going to have a Kohl's very soon in our area --- can't wait to hit the sale counters.
I'll confess, I'm an out of the closet shopaholic! And my husband knows it. He's a wood turner and a tool-a-holic so he understands. ;)

Okay Donna...out with it. Just how does one go about turning shoe boxes inside out? Spill the beans, girl friend...
Closet shopaholic? I came out of the closet years ago. :D My signature says it all. So many stores...so little time. And they keep building more. :woohoo:
Yes Tracey...it would be so very lonely. They wouldn't be lonely ever again at my house. ;)
Donna,
You'll love Kohls! Never pay full price for anything there. Just wait a few days and it will be on sale!

Yippee! Yippee! Can't wait for Kohls. We went out for lunch today and saw the cement slab that will be their floor --- sure wish they'd hurry. I do love sales!
To turn a shoebox inside out --- it has to be one of those that has the fold-over ends --- first work the ends loose and flatten the box. Then fold each crease the opposite way it was and fold it back together. It only works on boxes like the ones that sport shoes, danskos, etc. come in. You end up with the print on the inside and a plain cardboard outside.

LMAO!!! This is too much, I don't know where to start first!
I am jealous of all who have a Kohl's -- my closest is 2 hours away....bummer. I want one now!! Wonder if I can buy one..... all the sheets and towels I could ever want...plus shoes, I would make them order just my sizes.... hee hee hee....
And I am so glad that Sharon asked on how to turn a shoebox inside out, apparently the picture in my head of that trick was waaaaaaaaaaay off, lol. Your way is much easier Donna!! :) LMAO! And I have to say, it takes a woman with a looooooot of shoe boxes to come up with that trick! ;)
Oh my, I am so sorry to be responsible for a new addict... And even a full blown one starting out on the hard stuff, oh my. Do be careful! And you are already hiding things, oh no....run, don't walk, and get help now! You still have time to save yourself!!! Unless....it is fun isn't it??? Ah, new bedding.....nice and comfy..... Hmmm, wonder if Penney's is still having that sale....be back in a bit! Don't wait up! Yeeehaaaaa! Show me the sheets!!!!!!

Ok- I too have a shoe addiction. Mine is Strappy high heeled sandles (even though it is hard to wear them with the back issues). and I LOVE LOVE LOVE black ones...they go with everything. My husband once asked...Why are women obsessed with shoes and the only thing I could come up with is that no matter what our feet never change size. Our weight may fluctuate but our feet, for the most part pretty much stay the same. I am also addicted to purses...usually Coach. I have run out of room in my closet for shoes and handbags. My other addiction is stuffed bears and Barbies (I know, I am 38-grow up) but I just love em.

I am a shoe nut, but there is one obsession that outdoes the shoe addiction --- and that is dal*****ns. I have at least 500 ceramic, crystal, wood, metal, stuffed, plates, slippers, earmuffs, you name it --- if it has a dal*****n on it, if I don't have it, I'll buy it! I even have a teapot with a dal*****n on it --- and the angel for the top of our Christmas tree has a dal*****n head, complete with halo.

I'm so glad to see someone else shares that passion with me. I need my bf to read your post LOL! Ohhhhh , I want the Christmas tree dalmation with the halo, where on earth did you find that??? And the teapot.....oh me.
I got a real old porcelin set from Ebay once, these were made in the 1950's, and they're gorgeous...I think I know what to ask for for Christmas now.
You're not nuts...if you are then I am too!!

11-10-2005, 06:16 PM
Oh Rhea, you said the same thing I have always said!! No matter what shoes are always good, they don't make your butt look fat, ever! And they always fit, unless your feet are puffed, but then you just wear a different styled pair, and presto!!!
Sandy, what kind of coffee maker? We just bought a new one on Monday, and I said the glowing-green circle that is the clock looks like something on the instrument panel of hubby's boat! He just had to have this one, I said it looked complicated, and the last thing I needed was to be confused by my coffee pot....sheesh...... And Sandy yes, that is the motto of the Housewares Addiction Society (we aren't anonymous, lol). The Shoe Addiction group meets across the hall, and for those with multiple addictions there are mulitiple meetings. Usually there is a 60 minute break in between meetings for potty breaks, lol. Sometimes meetings run long due to members excusing themselves for bathroom runs... LMAO!!
And Donna, when on the job site, it's safety first, ok? Don't forget your hard hat and steel-toed Birkenstocks!!! LOL!! Nah you aren't nutz, I am a cat figurine collector so I totally get it!! Oops, another addiction out of the closet!!! Oh no, there really is no hope for me...

Donna, I knew you had a dalmation, too. I've got pictures of my big ole baby boy on the photo album I posted. Do you have a picture of your sweetie? I love dalmations so much. They always have gotten a bad rap, that they;re hyper, etc, but once I took the time to train my dog and spent tons of time and love on him, he's a great friend and has gotten me through some very rough, very sick times in my life. He's 6 yrs old now, will be 7 on Jan 18th. I got him from a rescue place---he'd been abused and dropped off at the shelter at 10 weeks of age, and I got him at 12 weeks.
He's still afraid of lighters, if you lift a magazine or newspaper the wrong way or too fast, and loud noises scare him to death. I can't imagine what these people did to that little puppy. :(
So, I guess he's another passion/addiction of mine---that and kitty cats. I do have kittys all over the house too, live ones and all sorts of figurines.

oops, Tracey, I forgot to answer your question. It's a Mr. Coffee with settings for how strong ya want the coffee, how hot you want the burner, the delay to set up the pot for morning coffee, water filter, and the permanent, reusable filter--so no more paper filters, ever, etc.....and the dial is bright, glowing green. I'm proud to say that I only have one addiction...ebay. HOWEVER, I want everything on ebay! They have pages and pages of scrapbook supplies, home decor...oh my gosh, you name it, they have it! I've actually gotten some great sheet sets (new of course) from ebay for less than half of what they were at Pottery Barn and BB & Beyond. I also had hand me down towels and sheets, and after months of cutting the frayed towel edges off so they don't get tangled up with one another, I went shopping.
I also shop alot at TJ Maxx for towels and sheets. I save about 65% of retail.
I collect antique milk glass. I have a guest bedroom that is painted green (kind of a sage green) with black and white toile accessories. I have my milk glass collection in there and the room just seems so elegant, you can't have less than 400tc in there!
Oh the life of an addict....

11-12-2005, 03:27 AM
Oh Sandy!! That's the same one we got!!! LMAO! One more thing in common....way too funny!!!!! And even funnier is we described it the same way!! Like a marine vehicle, lol!!
Well, I have officially hit rock bottom -- I think, lol. Went to Home Depot last night and then..................WALMART - dangerously layed out, right next to eachother! Yahooooooooooo! And my (loving, but-not too-bright sweetie, LMAO) just HAD to walk down the towel isle (while I was looking at sheets, and that was after I decided I needed a new pillow to sleep on, lol) and picked one up and told me I just had to feel it, it was awesome..... DAMN him!!! These were GREAT they feel just like my faves from Penney's - the Chris Madden Spa Collection!!! And they are DIRT cheap! A bath towel is a whole 5 bucks I think!! Oh were they heavenly!!! I decided I needed them, but alas, he intervened....He did tell me (and this is ablsolutely the god's honest truth, I swear he even told his mom later, lol) that I got this crazed look in my eyes, and they glazed over...he swore I was on some kind of high.... well, I was! LOL He had me laughing so hard in McDonald's telling me this, I had people staring at me, lol.
Then, oh wonder of wonders, they had the COOLEST duvet cover set in one of the colors I wanted, a taupe. It was only 55 bucks, for the queen and it came with the shams!! The cover we got from Penney's as a wedding gift, did not. I had to complete the set and the shams were 25 bucks a piece!!! This was the whole shebang, and same quality and tc!!!! Again, he intervened. I tried so very hard to explain to him in McD's the specialness of this deal, it came with SHAMS!!!! So, now his favorite phrase is to say in a high-squeaky voice (apparently it's supposed to sound like me....) "but it comes with SHAMS!". Not funny.
Oh my I want them so bad I can taste it....must have the towels and the duvet set...must have them!!!! I need to find a way.... When he was talking to him mom, she asked if we got either/or, lol, he said no, and she was shocked. She said his DAD would have...LOL See, she understands the value of a nice towel and a duvet set with shams!!!!!!!!!!
I feel I am in my own private towel craving duvet set coveting hell.....
