I've been on Effexor XR for quite some time now. My sex drive has lowered and lowered over time. I just thought that I was tired or my body was sore so I didn't have the interest. My boyfriend does not like this at all. We used to be horn dogs all the time. Sex is not even really on my mind anymore.
Have any of you been on Effexor then went off because of this reason? Has anyone found a better anti-d? Don't get me wrong, I like Effexor, I've lost 20 lbs. and I've been able to stay awake all day!!!
Please respond if you can help advise me!!
Thanks :)
I am on Lexapro which is one of the newer SSRIs. It is supposed to be one of the ones with the fewest side effects. My sex drive was already really low - so I'm not a good one to report in on that side effect. However, I make sure my husband and I do "get together" often enough and I can say that once we get going I am into it and I can still orgasm just fine. ;)

My opinion after having plenty of bad side effects and low sex drive after anti depressants is to stay away from all of them and go with natural remedies, like light therapy (which I have yet to try). You're better off taking a chocolate bar or going out for ice cream than taking an anti depressant that would help you better. Antidepressants simply stopped me from feeling any emotions, unable to cry, unable to feel any emotions one way or the other to a great deal. Stay away from them they are bad news.

Wellbutrin in not supposed to affect sex drive or cause weight gain.

Wellbutrin works great for me. More energy, less appetite so no weight gain, no problems regarding sex drive, and best of all.... it doesn't make my IC worse and it actually helps my depression and energy level.
But we all react differently to antidepressants. Sometimes you have to try different ones under the guidance of a knowledgable Dr. (I've tried almost every antidprssant available and most made my IC worse or didn't help my depression).

Prozac made me blurred vision and so I had to go off that. Paxil was on a few years and not so bad, but difficulty walking and speech worse. Most psych meds made me gain weight like 30 pounds when I changed meds. It depends on the type of mental health issues the person has, the dosage, and the correct combination of medications. You do have to do what your psychiatrist tells you and you need to advise him or her of any possible problems such as side effects, and ask or tell him what else you are taking and if there is a problem, try to get off of it. With some there are withdrawals with getting off the meds, some there were not for me. LIGHT - getting outside, talking a walk for instance, turning lots of light on at night helps me the more sunshine the better. One day I'll get a light therapy lamp. Had went to the Domes once where they had lots of plants and they had some solar type heat a huge place, I had no problems at all there my depression went away, and that was when my problems were very very bad and there I had no problems.
