this may be a little long- but here goes-, I have have been diagnosed with IC for about 6 years and my local gyno has treated me for the most part with some success, I would have DMSO cocktails and hydros about every 6 months and then be ok for the most part for 4-5 months, my nightmare began in may 2005 ,I recieved my DMSO-no relief, it actually got worse, another in Sept. 2005- no relief, Now my Doc says he has done all he can and sends me to a "specialist" in Birmingham Al(where I live)- this guy is suppossed to be TOP NOTCH-very educated in IC- He and his Nurse Practitioner tried to kill me. She did a rescue instill with Sodium bicarb, marcaine, gentamyacine and solumedrol- sho inserted a 14 french rubber cath with no lubricant-no lidocaine, the pain i experianced was so severe I screamed and cried for 10 min.-after that i was still in extreme pain but it relented a little-i vioided after 20 min. and really hurt.-the nurse came back in and did a "bladder scan" and said i had no residual-i found that hard to believe since i have had residual for 5 years, but i my bladder was numb so i just had a faint"full" feeling- I asked for some type of pain meds to get me thru until i could get relief , the nurse told me"we do not give pain meds"-i was able to painfully walk out of the office and while standing at the elevator-my bladder spasamed and about 300ccs ran down my leg-in my shoe and soaked my pants.at this point i am crying uncontrolably and lying in my car, unable to drive due to pain and stress.after 20 min. in the car i was able to drive home and fall into bed- if anyone out there Knows a Doc within 100 miles of Birmingham Alabama-PLEASE post a name and # I NEED SOME TYPE OF RELEIF. Sorry to be so down, but you ladies seem like the only ones who understand this awful curse of IC-thanks, Melanie

Oh melanie bless your heart I just want to reach out and give you a big hug, and tell you everything will get better.
are you doing the IC diet? that helps so much for many icer even some icer go into remission with the diet. ( i however had to do installments with pain medicine )
in the mean time while your looking for a new uro. Ask the uro your seeing if they will give you a ref. to a pain clinic to help you.
maybe once you get your pain under control.
there is many diff. type of installments i use heparin and marcaine installments which worked best for me the other ones seem to kill my my bladder. I suffered so until My doctor and I found the right installment for my bladder.
Keep your chin up hon you will find the right treatments.
also you may need to go into the e.r they should (i can't promise they will all e.r don't know about IC or dont understand it) but they should give you pain control. You do have rights as a pain pat.
sending you hugs and prayers and best wishes.

I cannot imagine a medical professional inserting a catheter with no lubricant. I think I might write a letter to the Board of Nursing in your state reporting the incident. They won't do anything based on one letter, but if they have other complaints, they will definitely follow up.

I hope you feel better soon.

Glad you found a new doc! That is fantastic news, and it sounds like someone who will work WITH you instead of just "on" you!!! :)

I was just thinking that perhaps the gentamycin was irritating to you. I had the same experience with the same type of cocktail. I now do treatments at home without the gentamycin and don't have that horrific pain afterwards. Just a thought.
