I know that a side effect of Elavil (Endep) is a dry mouth.
Has anyone who has had this problem had lumps in the throat as a result of taking this drug?
I feel like there is something stuck in my throat. My GP thought it was just dried mucosa but now I can feel a lump externally in the same area.

Wow...I would get a second opinion just to be sure. Have you researched the drug online? I know often find out a lot more about side effects online than I ever get from a pharmacy.

I hope whatever it is you are ok.

In a previous post it was suggested to use Biotene Toothpaste for dry mouth. It helps me, I also buy the gum. My dry mouth is from Detrol.

I have appointments with an ENT specialist and rheumatologist on the 14th and 28th Nov but have been a bit nervous about waiting two weeks. I rang the GP yesterday who said it is probably just a swollen gland. My concern was that if it is something more sinister would it be ok to wait the two weeks. She said it would be alright.

But I know I'll worry until then. I don't know what else to do. It takes so long to see specialists here and I don't think going to the ER would help.
Katrina, I haven't researched the drug but will do so now. There are always strange side effects with drugs that are not in the norm of things so maybe that is the case here.
Thanks to you all for your replys it really helps.

Oh and thanks Barb. I found some sugarless lollies that help a lot with the dry mouth and carrying a waterbottle everywhere with me is essential.
My eyes are a bit dry as well and the GP gave me a script for drop but I haven't seen the need to use them as yet.

I've taken a tricyclic antidepressant for about 10 years for my IC, but lately my IC symptoms have gotten worse. So I've increased my ad, but that has made the dry-mouth problem really severe. I can be in the middle of talking to someone and BAM I can't peel my tongue from the roof of my mouth. I always have water nearby, and I'm ready to buy stock in the company that makes Ice Breakers, the only sugar-free mints that I can stand. It makes me feel really self-conscious, since dry mouth usually causes bad breath, and I'm in close contact with lots of people at work. I'm still trying to decide whether to jump back onto the IC merry-go-round and go back to instills or try some of the newer stuff I've read about here.

I would worry about the lumps too.. Maybe ween your self off them and if the problem goes away, you problem is solved.... you know your own body and this don't sound right.. Maybe call the pharmacy, they often know more info about meds then our doctors.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Tigger, I dare not go off the med. It is the only thing I have at the moment to stop the pain. It's only a week now till I see the ENT specialist.Trouble is now I have these coughing fits that are driving me mad especially at night, Guess I'll just have to hang in there until next monday.

I went to see the ENT specialist and after a barium test ( isn't that a wonderful experience!) he tells me there is nothing wrong Oh no! here we go again. He rambled on about a thing called Globus Syndrome which boils down to it being in my head!!!!!!!
Agh!!!!!!!!!!!! My bladder was all in my head and now so it seems is my throat...at least its getting closer.
Anyhoo, I see a rheumatologist next monday. My GPs initial thought was that it is Sjrogens Symdrome. So we will see next week.
