Well it took a few hours staring at it before I finally got 2 1/2 mg. of dye-free Elavil into my mouth after the Nortriptylene chest pain fiasco, but 2 1/2 hours later I can't tell I took anything which is great, however bladder is throbbing. But who's to say it's the Elavil vs. my everyday life. Ok my best recollection is when people stop it, it's more for side effects than because it made them worse bladder-wise but need to know I guess. Nortriptylene didn't hurt my bladder or maybe it did but given chest pain comparable to an MI and sweating profusely I may not have exactly noticed. So tell me if anyone actually had increased bladder pain from the Elavil itself. And did anyone have increased pain that stuck it out and had it get better. Usually if it's every day pain I void and get better for 10 mins. and if it's something I put in my mouth, it doesn't get better after a void. I just voided and I still hurt so lend me your experience please.

Dianne, I don't mean to be negative, but I have to say I had increased pain with both Elavil and Pamelor. I tried so many times. I tried scraping the dye off the pills, I tried taking them with prelief - nothing helped. It seemed that they just drove my bladder crazy. I had to pee every second I was on them - the only time I got any relief was when I voided, and then when they finally wore off.

I was really disappointed, too, because Elavil is one of the most effective drugs for IC pain - probably THE most effective non-narcotic drug - out there.

I'm so sorry. But I would try several times - don't give up the first time - you need to be certain.

Blessings, Lori

I could count on one hand what oral meds. I can tolerate so this is no surprise. I will probably not do a 2nd one tonight if this continues. I wish it would work because I don't want a spinal cord stimulator. If I have urethritis by bedtime then I will know for sure it was the Elavil.

Progress Report: (or lack of). After the 2 1/2 mg. of Elavil, I didn't feel differently but at 2 hours I started with incredible bladder pain that lasted for 8 hours. I decided to try again today just in case it was a fluke yesterday. At 2 hours here we go again. So I guess I'm done with Elavil. Now to get through the day.... Lyrica would be only other possible before spinal cord stim is all that's left.

Diane, I would be done with Elavil. It was listed on worst pills.org as one of the worst, and I had terrible experiences with it.

I can't take elavil, but it's not because it causes bladder pain --- what it did to me was make my hyper and raised my blood pressure to dangerous levels. My husband, on the other hand, takes a 10 mg dose every night and it helps with arthritis pain.

Elavil turned out to be my "miracle" drug. I started out at 50 mg and it took 3 months to work and I hated the side effects but I stuck it out. After 3 months I felt normal again. That was 6 years ago. I am now down to 5 mg and have been peeing 3 times a day since then. I dont know what it did exactly but thank God it helped.
