View Full Version : Flu Shot and Flare?

Hey all,

Has anyone gotten the flu shot yet this year? Since I work in a hospital setting, they stick all of us (unless contraindicated due to an allergy) to prevent outbreaks ... I had mine yesterday, and about an hour later my bladder began acting up, and it still is today. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience -- and if you think the flare is from the shot or if it's just a coincidence.

I know the shot is preserved in Thimerosol, and I've read that that can be a bladder irritant for some (so much so that some ICers can't use contact lens solution with thimerosol in it), so I am thinking perhaps the preservative has caused the flare.

I thought nothing of it at the time I got the shot -- I am asthmatic and usually get the flu shot, since flu and asthma don't mix well. I just can't remember if the same thing happened last year or not :bonk:

Thanks for any stories or input. :)

I haven't had the flu shot yet but I am asking for one when I go to the Dr. this afternoon. I am sorry you are in a flare . I hope you feel better soon.

We always get flu shots. All I ever get is a sore arm.

Well, my arm is sore... and I know I always get that. :) I guess it's probably just coincidence then that my bladder is acting up, because that's the only thing that's been different in the last few days...

Jen,

I am getting mine tomorrow. I have gotten them in the past but that was when my IC was at it's worse. Now that I'm in remission...I will let everybody know tomorrow how my bladder liked it.

Got mine about two weeks ago. I was fine afterwards. Not even a sore arm. :)

I just got mine and I hope I don't get a flare I have enough pain with my kidney infection.

I have not had my flu shot this yr but plan on it. I had no idea that contact cleaning solution had something in it to flare me up. I am definitely going to check into that

Since I had heart surgery, I get a flu shot, I'm either waiting for my doctors office to get theirs, or the office to offer it, either way it will cost me about $20.00. The only thing I get is maybe a sore arm. My husband just received his the other day, and he gets a mild case of the flu.

Hello, I have had flu shots a few times with no problems and I am usually allergic to some meds with side effects to them. For asthma conditions, try the pneumonia shot as I had that a few years ago and it seemed to help for at least awhile. I didn't get as many colds as usually when I had the flu shot. I used to get the flu shot free at work, I do not any longer as I can't work any more obviously.

I get the flu shot every year and it hasn't bothered me that I have noticed. Will have to watch, going next week for mine.

Hope all settled down soon for you !
