I am scheduelled to have this test (defocography) on the 4th and suspect it will be be terrible.

"Defecography involves taking an x-ray of the rectum and sigmoid (or lower) portion of the colon while you are emptying the barium from your bowel. In order to see details of the rectum, your rectum will be filled with barium. If you are a woman, your small bowel and vagina will also be fi9lled barium. For the test to be optimally performed, you need a clean and empty colon."

That description is from the hospital....I think this sound like torture...any thoughts?

It certainly doesn't sound like fun. I hope it isn't horrible for you.

I hope it won't be too bad. I am hoping that it won't be any more uncomfortable than an enema - it sounds a bit like that to me, like holding an enema and then going to the bathroom only they X-ray you while it is happening. Hopefully it won't be especially painful. These kinds of tests are never fun, it's always embarrassing when it involves the areas "down there" but we get through them. Please try to plan a treat for yourself (maybe a shopping trip, or buying a new book that you can read, etc.) for afterwards so that you have something to look forward to when it's all done. I find that often helps me get through a procedure I am dreading.

Well it is a 3 hour ride there and a 3 hour ride back so I will be planning sleep and rest...and bathroom trips. The info I read online is worse than what I have....I already know I need to call about the prep...although it doesn't matter much what they say I cannot do the prep and be awake for the test so it is not happening their way!

Info online says that they put the stuff in your bladder in some places.

Oh Katrina, it doesn't sound fun does it? I don't think it sounds painful exactly, though...maybe uncomfortable, and will make your bladder angry, but I'm not sure it's going to hurt.

I'm sorry you're going through so much! I am glad, however, that you are getting some help!! I was very worried about you a few days ago!!

Well thanks a bunch for the support. The prep sheet says let your doctor know if you have:
There is any chance you may be prenant...no
You have had a rectal surgery in the past...yes
You have history of chronic colitis...yes
You have renal kindney disease ... no
You have heart problems....yes
you have diabetes mellitus....no


If my doctor had spent a bit of time talking to me he would realize that the prep is impossible for me and hopefuly had given me a different one...but instead I have to call. Boy this doctor keeps getting on my nerves!

Ugh... that sounds like an awfully embarrassing test! :( I hope it isn't too bad for you :grouphug:
