One of my hobbies is photography, and after just learning how to "share" these things in message boards, I am going to test it out here! Here's a couple of my favorites I have taken...

This one is my Hubby on his boat:

http://static.flickr.com/30/52516293_9922856500_m.jpg

This one is my Cali girl who passed away this past March:

http://static.flickr.com/27/52516296_a5d5ff5e8f_m.jpg

Hugs!! More as I get them worked on and into the computer! LOL :biglaugh: Yikes, Flickr (the photo site I use) may have created a monster....

LOL, very easy Martha, if I can do it, shoot -- anyone can!! I have better luck with Flickr, for some reason easier for me. I have heard photobucket is supposed to be easy for newbies, but not this one! LOL!!! It's just going to the site, creating an account, and then uploading your pics from your computer. It will then create a url for your photo, and shazam you are good to go!! LOL I would LOVE to see some of your cards!!!!

Hugs!

hey, ps....hope I'm not butting in on your thread.....LOL! I just thought I'd sit for a minute and start posting some pictures of my lil ones, and the only picture I have small enough is the one of me...gotta do some resizing, which I dont think I have time to do right now.

I'm smiling, and I've not been a happy girl today!

traceann
10-17-2005, 09:20 AM
Oh heck no I do not consider it butting in at all!! I am looking forward to you getting them on here! Fun huh?? You should try Flickr, it's pretty darn cool. And if you have a Yahoo ID it's super easy, you just sign in with that and you are good to go. Ready to upload and store them there. Really neat.

Oh and thanks Sandy for the compliment!! The thing with photography that drives me crazy is you gotta take a lot of stinkers to get that "perfect shot", thank god for digital cameras, lmao!! The one of my hubby turned out much better than I ever planned on!! It's so "artsy" looking, lol. I am going to print it out, mat it and frame it for his mom and dad for Christmas. And my LilyBug was just a natural for taking pics of! My Missy Girl...ugh, you get down to take one and she comes running over for petting!! LMAO!!!!

Hugs and get them kiddies on here! I will have to post one of me that hubby took while goofing around with the digital...no fair, he doesn't even TRY and his come out good!! LOL, well, it's easy when you have me as the subject....NOT!! LMAO ;)

Flickr is a really cool, very simple website to post photos and learn a bit about photography. I post on there quite frequently and visit the site daily--http://www.flickr.com/photos/17065981@N00/

Another good website is Popular Photography magazine--popphoto.com.
The magazine was recently, and might still be, running a sale on subscriptions for $12/year.

What type of camera does everyone use? I bought a Canon G6 back in July and am loving it.

Happy shooting

LOL, Jen it's very easy! Check out the website and it will talk you through, then when you've hosted them there, when you are posting, you click the "mountain" button at the top of the message body area (where the other things are, like "bold", "italic" etc) and paste your link you got from uploading your pic to flickr (really like that site a lot) then click to enter it! 4 more days....

Hey Diana, I use a Olympus D-510. I have had it for a few years now, love it but ready for new, lol. My SLR non-digital is a Minolta, love that one too! Need some new lenses. I use to get Popular Photography and I believe it was called "American Photo" or something like that. Loved that mag!! This is all reminding me I still have like 17 rolls of film to develop...oh thank goodness for digital...ugh!!

Oh Marly, don't worry, I have soooo many cat pictures, it's unbelievable. At the most, I had 6 cats at one point...and 3 litter boxes...LOL!!!

Ok ladies, here's a couple of me, since Sandy put her gorgeous mug on this board...I gotta keep up with the "Jones's" LOL... Er, I should say the "Sandy's"!!

This one is from my Bday this past Feb., the "before" ugliness of colitis flare up, looking fairly healthy, lol
http://static.flickr.com/33/56418829_cc9ec04146_m.jpg

Here's me and Hubby on our Wedding day, I look goofy cause that was at the height of my undiagnosed colitis bouts and the dress I am wearing was too big by the time I got to wear it here, so looks kinda droopy....LOL Oh yeah, and don't mind the salad dressing stain on his shirt, the poor waitress was clearing plates, turned to fast and the leftover salad dressing ended up dressing his shirt...

:) hi guys, sandy for some reason I pictured you a blonde, don't know why. beautiful photo's tracey, I pictured you different too, don't we all do that?? you know what I mean, when you have never actually met or seen someone you chat with, I get this picture of what they might look like, I'm usually wrong though....
Anyway, tried to borrow a digital camera last night from a friend, but someone else has already borrowed it, but I got another friend who has a digital too, so I will try her, I would like to buy a digital camera, but other things have priority, maybe when I have the extra cash I will buy one. .. martha

Oh Janie! Beautiful!! You have inspired me! :) I need to get my butt in gear and get working again on my photos. I have a dream to decorate my walls with my artwork...I have NOTHING hanging on them now...better get cracking! Seeing yours has got a fire lit under me now!! LOL

Thanks ladies for the compliments too, lol **blushing**

:) hi you all, beautiful pictures Janie, I love the yellow daisies, ( I got a thing for yellow flowers) at least I think they are daisies? Tracey do you like black and white photo's? I think certain photo's look so much nicer in black and white. My walls are covered with pictures, I cannot stand bare walls, my husband used to get so upset, because I had once again changed the pictures on the wall, and there is all those holes from where I moved them. We justed painted our lounge room, so I'm trying really hard not to move anything this time, don't know if that is going to last though, probleby not, lol, .
I asked my other friend if I could borrow her digital, she said I could, but her son's girlfriend has it right now, but I will get it as soon as she is finished with it, so I will have to wait a little longer to put pictures of my cards on here, but they are coming I promise, ...martha

How cool to come back to find a section for Arts, Crafts & Hobbies! Thank you Martha for coming up with the suggestion, and thanks to you Jill for making it happen! I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time here!

Tracey, your photos are beautiful. Both the photo of your husband on the boat and the one of your cat make wonderful use of lighting!

I enjoyed seeing your work too Jane. Is that strictly photography or digital enhanced?

Though I spend a lot of time chasing wildlife with my camera, I'm amazed at those who can find art through a lense. So often I think "Oh, this shot is going to be great", only to be so disappointed with the results!

Funny you should say that Martha...I am a black and whit FANATIC, lol. I take all my shots, (most anyway) and turn them black and white. You are so right B&W enhances sooooo many photos, especially your human subjets, lol. It evens out skin tones and everyone looks fabulous...reminds me of Old Hollywood Glamour shots, oh I love those pictures...every one looked soooo glamourous, sigh... And I love to take some of my flower/nature shots and transform them too. Ask my hubby, I am a B&W nut!! LOL! ;) When I get them in I'll share some of my "transformations", so much fun!!!

Oh, and thank you Vicki! I am so glad I have as many shots of Cali as I do, since she's the one who passed away this past March, and was such an easy photo subject. I had some really great ones of her on a cd I accidentally wrote over the original table of contents and wiped out a year's worth of pictures I had taken of her, my other kitty and all my garden flowers I was snapping for a gardening scrapbook. Talk about wanting to cry! Then I had a disk in my camera with some really cute pics of Cali the week before she died, and the disk decided it was going to error on me, and lost all of those too....waaaaa!!!

And yeah, I have many on film that I thought looked great through the lens, only to find out otherwise!! I have shot whole rolls just to get one decent pic out of the whole bunch...thank goodness for digital!!! :)

:) thank you vicki, I am so glad Jill gave us this section, everybody benefits, and that's a good thing, it's good not to have to think of our bladders for a little while. ..Tracey, yes I agree, those glamourshots from the olden days were beautiful, I remember ava gardner, sophia loren, natalie wood, marilyn monroe, grace kelly, jane mansfield etc, they all looked gorgeous, and the men looked so handsome.
How sad that you have lost so many photo's of your cat, it is so hard when they pass, and all we have left are memories and photo's, my shi-tsu died last year, and we were devastated, we have photo's all over the place of her, and I cut a little bit of her hair to put with her photo, now we have a 16 month old maltese terrier called Lily, and she is a bundle of energy, sometimes I joke that she needs to be on valium lol, but I honestly could not imagine not having a pet, I always had pets,.. dogs, cats, birds, hamsters,.
dg, lovely photo's, did you take them?? ....martha

I hear you Martha, my animals are my little babies! Been through so much with me, always there when I have felt yucky, etc. I too can not imagine being with out one... I love animals! :)Which is funny, cause I have my cat Missy (Cali's sister) on my lap as I try to type, lol. Critters! ;)

Oh yes, Thank you Jill once again for this section! You know when I am here, it's all I am thinking about! Nice!!! Too engrossed in my hobby, and love it! Makes me think of what I can do that I love, and blocks out all other stuff! Yippy!!!! :)

There is a photo of Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn that I LOVE. It's so unbelievable...I will have to find it somewhere. I love those old photos. I used to get a subscription to American Photography and I saved an issue where they highlighted the old Hollywood type pictures, it's the only issue I ever saved!! LOL!!

Off to search for that picture on the net somewhere.....

Hugs!!!!

Vicki,Those pictures I shared the links to were digitally enhanced with Paint Shop Pro (a program similar to Photo shop) but I am getting more and more into straight digital photography. I'll have to share some of my recent photos one of these days.

Yes, this forum is great. I realized the other day how much less my IC bothers me when I'm excited about my hobby. when I am taking photos I really do forget my bladder sometimes.

Hey Diana, I use Flickr (now trying out Webshots also) to "host" my pics, then add the url Flickr creates for it, in the "insert image" box that pops up when the button is clicked on. That's how I got my full size pics in. I think the web addy is:

The "cat attack" photos--fortunately that wasnt me, it was the mother inlaw. Her cat for some reason turned on her when she was trying to get him back into the house. She went to her Dr and he immediately sent her to the emergency room because there was so much damage he didnt have the resources in his office to help her. She ended up with numerous stitches and lots of blood loss. Believe it or not she still has the cat (this happened about 5 years ago). I personally would have turned that cat into stir fry. She got the cat when it was less than 2 weeks old (she found it in the middle of a road) and nursed it to health and decided to keep it; so it was really strange that the cat would turn on its owner like that some 1-2 years later.

I have been away tooooooo long. It was only a couple of weeks that I was caught up in my friends party arrangements but look what I have missed!

I have peed myself reading this thread. If awards were given out here (and maybe they should be) dg you get one for persistence.
I had so much to catch up on that I had to make notes as I went. True!

Tracey you aren't what I pictured either. Guess I just hoped that everyone else was old and dumpy looking like me..pretty sad hey. Any photo I post here will be at least 20years old. If I can print out the photos of all you lovely people, I am going to put a photo board up above my computer. I know you are real but sometimes I feel like its just my computer and me. (you're all just little bytes inside the box).

My SLR is an ancient Pentax Spotmatic. I love my spottie but at 40yrs old it
is getting pretty hard to find parts for it. The last lightmeter was sourced from the US. My daughter is doing photograpy at secondary school and used Mr Spottie for her assignments. It is still up there with the fancy new cameras at the school.

Martha my digital is a Kodak easyshare, only 2 megapixels but its fine for the timebeing. I got it free through my Commonwealth bank awards program. My 50 birthday present to myself. It might be a way for you to get one. Some of the awards programs are pretty good I believe.

Look at the time! The ironing mountain has reached biblical proportions. I should fire up the iron and get to it...........nah I'm on to the next thread

:) Rosalie, I'm with you, If I am going to post a photo of myself it is going to be an old one, like when I was about 12 years younger, I'm not very photo genic, I really look bad in most photo's, most of them I have my eyes shut, or I have hit the bottle too much, lol, so I will only post the best photo I have, us oldies,oh sorry, mature ladies have to stick together haha.
My son has a account with the commonwealth bank, I may get him to look into that award system.

DG - Grab your link from flickr.

1.) If you are at your start page there, click on the photo you want to use and it will take you to a page with a larger version of your photo.

2.) From there click "all sizes" from the choices above the photo.

3.) When that new page opens it will give you two choices you can use for posting your photo somewhere else. (You have to be logged into your account for this feature.) Copy the FIRST link.

4.) Then when you reply HERE using the "Go Advanced" reply box, click on that "insert image" icon (mountain looking thing) and paste the link into the box that comes up and then click OK. That should work.

Click on that icon and a box will appear in the upper left hand side of your screen. Paste that link into that box, click "OK", and then post and it will appear:

Oh Kim, how nice of you to get my photo up for me. Its a bit scary seeing my fizgig staring out for all the world to see but I'm so very proud of my two beautiful kids that I will put with it.

Martha, not having a digital camera won't get you out of this. You have already given away that you have a scanner. Just scan any photo of you and your mob. They need to be less than 5mbs(is that right?) for Flickr to upload so just scan at a lower dpi if necessary.
You can do the same with your cards.

PS Kim, I went in again. When I click on the icon I don't get any box on the screen as you suggested. ?????????

Yeah.. Martha your cards are gorgeous!
Aren't we just the clever bunch for mastering this business of getting images up? Just shows how well this string works when we can teach each other new tricks.
There will be no stopping us now.

I have tried to use the foil "Happy Birthday" greetings etc. How on earth do you get them off the backing and on the card without stretching them?

And there I am left mouth agape. I have to take notes and draw myself little pictures.

MarthaB

:) yes I think I will do the same, I am going to be in charge, and he can teach me very slowly, ...he can be so inpatient, he is probleby thinking ''lets get mum of the computer really quick, so I can get online with my friends'' the little bugger, I usually only get till about 1 pm on the computer, because he comes home from school, granted it is in his bedroom, but hey I pay for half the internet fee, so I should be entitled to half the time, I'm to soft with him, so everybody keeps telling me, I love it when he has to work at mcDonalds in the afternoon, that means I get some more uninterupted time on the computer lol, ..martha

:) thanks for your flattering comment tracey, yep I am 47 and believe me I do look it too, aging can be so cruel, but anyway I can honestly say I am not a vain person, there are days I don't even bother to look in the mirror, I tell you a funny story, last sunday a friend of mine came over for a visit, anyway we got talking about the loungeroom we have just painted, and how I wanted to buy new pictures, and she said ''why don't you buy one of those large mirrors with the guilded brass frame, I told her I had been thinking of that, but it will have to hang pretty high, so I don't have to look at myself every time I walk past, we don't need Halloween every day of the year, lol :biglaugh: :biglaugh: anyway we got a laugh out of it,

Martha, I think you are gorgeous and have a beautiful family. You are now on my photo board. I love the backdrop, its so Brissie. Did you say what part of Brisbane you are in?
We used to travel to Qld regularly cause hubbys a bananabender but haven't been for about 4years. It got hard as the kids schooling became more intense.

I agree with you on the mirror thing. 20 years ago I desperately wanted one over the fireplace to make the room look bigger alas..no more. Now there is a sketch of a nude that I did when I was in uni, I tell people its me...wishfull sigh......

Yep Tracy the hair is the first to change.I used to have long blonde hair down my back but over the years is got darker and shorter. But now its getting lighter again (underneath the bottle colour that is!)

dg, your rose photo is very artistic. Do you have a macro lens? Roses are my favourite flower. Yesterday I was given a bunch of long stemmed white roses by a very nice young man. Brought back sweet memories. My sons friend gave them to me for doing him a favour.

MarthaB
10-26-2005, 01:31 PM
:) hi, thanks Rosalie, I live in wynnum, I love it here, we have been here since 1988, before that we lived in east brisbane, and before that in annerley, and before that holland, lol, but seriously wynnum is a bit like a country town, where everyone knows each other, when we lived in east brisbane, we didn't know anybody, but here it's totally different, we are close to the water, and we have a lovely park we used to go to a lot when the kids were little, we have the shopping centres close by, the trainstation is at the end of my street, so it is also easy to go the city, the highschool where my son goes to is at the other end of my street, when I stand on the footpath I can see the school.
I don't know if you have heard of wynnum, it used to be wynnam, it's an abriginal word for something, not sure what.
Diana what happened to your photo, It's gone!!!
Anyway I hope to see more photo's here on the board from all the others so we know what you guys look like, and so Rosalie can add to her collection, by the way, how do you cut and paste rosalie, never done that before,..
martha

Rosalie
10-26-2005, 02:40 PM
We have friends in Annerley and Davids aunt lives there too. You are just a bit south of my brother in Caboulture...if you need to buy a new ford, he has the dealership there. Probably won't sell to you any cheaper but he is a good bloke to deal with.

When you want to cut(or copy) and paste a picture, move the curser onto the picture, right click, a drop down box will appear. Click on copy. Then move to where you want the picture. Right click again and click on paste..Voila!
If you want to resize the picture in the new application, click on the picture and resizing handles should appear. Grab the bottom left and drag it to the size you want.

I think my photo got deleted when my pc crashed the other day. I'm going to have to find that pic and upload it again.

Oh,and yeah, I have a macro setting on my camera. That rose bush blooms constantly during the summer/spring and everytime we have a few warm days during the fall/winter. The bush is about 7 feet tall. We have a smaller one, about 2 feet tall that blooms the same way.

Gotta agree with Tracey, -a bunch of hot ladies here! Martha, you haven't changed all that much in those 12 years!

I'm with you on that aging can be cruel part. I don't mind the lines on my face that keep getting a bit deeper with each year as much as I dislike watching my body/health deteriorate! Sore joints, trick knee, stiffness, etc. I'm still 20 in my mind but trapped in a 48 year old body!

Will have to see if I can get a link to a picture of me up tomorrow!

I cannot wait to turn on the computer in the morning to see what's happening, of course it is afternoon in the US by then, but that doesn't matter, there is still plenty of people on line then.

Fantastic, what a bevy of beauties we are! Thanks Vicki.

I was just being a bit of a sook yesterday. I went to the docs a couple of weeks ago about dry eyes and mouth and what feels like something caught in my throat. She thought it might be Sjogrens disease, I can handle that, I know someone with it. Have to wait until 14th and 28th Nov to see two different specialists. Its just that a few days ago I found a lump in my neck and since then it has started to hurt.
I shouldn't worry cause my body likes growing extra bits that I don't need and they have always been benign.
I don't want to tell Campbell and Hilary (they are my closest confidants) they don't need that stuff but hubby just walked off and shut the door behind him and has said nothing since. Suppose I just wanted to hear someone say it will be alright.. Oh bugger now I'm blubbering

LMAO, Sandy, I think Paxil is more than enough to be weaning off of, lol!!! I was accused of being "hysterical" last night because he said he'd help me clear out the old stuff from the cupboards in the morning, then when afternoon came around, it was deemed that I was "nagging" --- "I only get one day to relax, and I gotta do this, and I gotta do that whaaa whaaaa whaaaaa" So, I said fine. I drug a kitchen chair into the kitchen and proceed to "clean out" the cabinets by throwing things over my shoulder and on to the floor...to tell you the truth, it was quite FUN!! LOL But, apparently that made me "hysterical"....whatever.....ugh....

LOL, thanks gang, yeah we have fun, nope, don't get seasick at all. I actually like it when it's got big rolling waves out there, like being on a rollercoaster, lol. One time we were dealing with 5ft rollers (big in a 27ft boat!) and hubby had to hang on to me (stood behind me)while I was trying to reel in a fish!! LOL It was way too funny. Yeah I keep hearing the "we need a bigger boat" every spring...ugh, then I remind him all of the expenses that go with this one, and I don't hear anymore of that kind of talk!! ;) Oh I agree, as much fun as it is reeling them in, I hate putting them in "the box" (the cooler), it's hard on me!!

Rosalie, I use both Flickr and Webshots. Mostly too because of the "limit" at Flickr. And yep, every month you get a "refill", lol. So, you can start uploading again!! Webshots is just as easy to me, so give it a shot!! ;)

OH MY, :biglaugh: I didn't even notice it was a HEARSE dg, that's hilarious!!! I love it! How creepy-crazy is that!! What fun! I thought it was a Blazer, think I need new glasses.........

Hugs!!!!

Hey, am I hearing the sounds of some trying to fix the kiddos up?? LOL!!!! Might be a very good plan indeed!!! ;)

Rosalie
11-02-2005, 11:18 AM
OK now I'm really confused. :hmm: Why would you have a hearse up on big wheels like that? Is it for dead people with really tall mourners? Or a monster hearse for monsters?

Whats wrong with a little matchmaking Tracey? Its not as if they are going to listen to us anyway. :biglaugh:
Do you lose the images you have already put on flickr when you get your new upload limit?

Martha, she's got the dress (well we have the material - picked it up off layby!) and shoes- I'll make sure she doesn't wear the cons. Just think of the fun we would have after we packed them off to the formal. :woohoo:
Hillz is having hers towards the end of Nov when is Timothy's?

MarthaB
11-02-2005, 12:02 PM
:) Hi Rosalie, Tim is having his formal on the 16th of november, at the Rydges southbank hotel, I'm sure you have heard of southbank, that's where the expo 88 used to be, he is really looking forward to this, just wish he would ask a girl, he keeps telling me he will, but I don't think he has the nerve, did you know that Hillary and Tim would be very compatable astrological wise, she's a libra and he is a gemini, both air signs, perfect :biglaugh: haha, martha

Rosalie
11-02-2005, 12:42 PM
Is Timothy into music? Or better a musician? At the moment she has a penchant for bass players but tomorrow who knows what?
If we are going to do this right, I'd better check some other stuff. Who are his favourite bands? And what sort of stuff does he like to do?
Hillz favs at the moment are The Distillers, Rancid, Greenday, Jimmy Eat World, Courtney Love and Hole, now, let me who else keeps awake at night? Oh yes. Bodyjar, AFI, Little Birdy, Misfits etc

Oh bugger, I've just realized that she will still be doing final exams. She doesn't finish up till Sat 19th Nov with her grade six AMEB!

Well girls, to be perfectly honest--my wedding photo was from 1997--as you can see from the pic with Lindsey on his shoulders hubby hasn't changed one iota. I on the other hand will have to find a decent close up that at least makes me reasonable svelte. Since Lindsey and the illnesses, they are scarce.

Nice pics Martha.Do you do the cross stitches that are printed onto the aida cloth or are they counted cross stitch?
And what is the gorgoeus purple flower. Is it a Jacaranda?

MarthaB
11-07-2005, 06:39 PM
:) thanks Tracey, they did take awhile to make, but I didn't mind, it was something I really wanted to do, I do some cross stich each day, I download lots of patterns from the net, and I have about 300 colours of dmc cotton.
I suppose you would only need black for stick men haha,
martha

MarthaB
11-07-2005, 06:52 PM
:) Hi,Rosalie, this is counted cross stich, I don't like the printed aida cloth, these 2 cross stich patterns came from the fox collection, the company is here in australia, and they have some beautiful things, usually I just buy half a metre of aida cloth, and use the patterns I download from the net, I have heaps of patterns, so it will keep me busy for awhile.
The purple flower you mentioned is a ''geisha girl'' , beautiful isn't it? it's growing right next to a pink bouganvillia, (spelt wrong) and the contrast of those two colours is really nice. I'm glad it's nearly summer, everything is starting to flower, and we also had some nice rain lately, that makes a lot of difference.

I learned on printed, then got brave and taught myself counted. That's my winter activity, can sit in my chair watch TV and stitch away...lol. I too have tons of floss, I figure I want to have enough so that if I decide I want to work on a project, I can start right away, and not worry about having to run out an buy any. I have only done one project for myself, that I am really proud of. Took me forever to do, but I love it. It's funny, I had bought the magazine for the pattern like in 1993, lol, but didn't get around to starting it until 2001 something or other, lol. I will have to dig it up and take a pic of it. It's not framed or anything yet, I have to get that done..... Ok, now getting revved up for stitching! ARGH!!! I have so many things I want to do, and not enough hours in the day! GRRR! LMAO!!!! :)

Hugs!

MarthaB
11-08-2005, 12:51 PM
:) yes I know what you mean Tracey, It's soooo annoying if you have to run out to get a colour, I have just about every one, and I keep a list of the ones that need refilling, I have a box full of finished cross stitch pieces, ready to go on the cards, my husband always says you don't need to do anymore, you got plenty, but I don't think I have ever enough, I see a new pattern, and I have to have it, at the moment I love the ''tatty bears'' they are so cute, yep definately not enough hours in the day, between cleaning and cooking, and all the rest of it, there just isn't enough time, I think one day should last 48 hours not 24, we get so much more done,
martha

traceann
11-08-2005, 04:58 PM
I like your idea! Yes, a 48 hour day!! LOL Ugh, somehow I think I would manage to even fill up that time with more chores, boo. I always thougth it'd be great to make the weekends Mon-Fri, and the work week Sat-Sun. And still get paid for a full 5 day week, lol!!

I agree, it's not about how many you have, it's the creating them that counts!! I haven't mounted and framed anything yet, lol. Is it easy to do????

Hugs!

MarthaB
11-08-2005, 07:20 PM
:) hi Tracey, framing can be difficult, my hubbie used to frame everything for me, is you hubbie good with tools? I think you could probleby google ''making picture frames'' and see what comes up, and you can just start with a small piece, that way you don't waste wood.
martha

Rosalie
11-09-2005, 10:59 AM
I started with the long stitch pieces years ago and had my mum doing a couple. She died before she could finish her last one which was a pair to one I had done. I brought it home but it was a few years before I could touch it.I had a good weep every time I looked at it.
Eventually I was able to work on it and both my children, even my son, did a part to complete the work. Both pieces hang side by side in my hallway.
Sometimes, when I pass mum's piece I run my fingers over it and feel a connection with her.

Counted cross stitch for me, is just to difficult. I continually lose my place and put stitches where they aught not be!
It can be very expensive having your works professionally framed.A friend of mine is a picture framer but she must use extremely expensive materials because even with her discount, I cannot afford her. My hubby has built a couple of frames but I like them straight, so now I check out Kmart or some of the discount places.

MarthaB
11-09-2005, 11:33 AM
:) Hi Rosalie, I know what you mean, I lost my mum in 1993, she was only 59, she made a tablecloth for me, and it is very precious, and she also knitted some outfits for the kids when they were babies.
Cross stitch can be frustrating, I look at it like a '' jigsaw puzzle with cotton'', it's like putting all the pieces in the right place.
Also I never work on the original pattern, I copy the sheet, and enlarge it, and then fill each piece with a feltpen as you go, that way you know exactly where you are, and you don't ruin the original pattern, it works for me every time, and I have been doing cross stitch since I was 15, have a go at it, and try to do it the way I explained and you may be surprised., just start of with a small piece, you could even download a small pattern from the net, just google '' free cross stitch patterns'' or if you want to I could pm you with a site, what sort of cross stitch do like? animals or flowers? just let me know if you want to give it a try.
I know I ramble on about cross stitch, but I love doing it, maybe I should go to a AA meeting for cross stitch addicts, :woohoo:
martha

Rosalie
11-09-2005, 11:39 AM
Martha, I like the idea of crossstitching so much that I even bought a small program. With it, I can scan photos or import images from anywhere and convert them into a cross stitch pattern. It is a DMC one so it will even print which flosses you need.

You know? the white rabbit from Alice in wonderland
Crazy phrases, I just make them up as I go along long! Like just about everything else I do. Planning isn't in the scorpio mind at all. My mum used to call me rip, S -H-one-T ( I know the real thing won't print) and bust!

Actually, a lot of my sayings come from my maternal grandmother...Now there was a DRAGON for you...and I mean dragon in the most positive way. She could make you hop, skip and jump alright!

And from my paternal grandmother came the gift of the gab. But I'll never be as good as her...she could talk you up and down the street before you knew you'd even left home. Mum reckoned she could talk the leg off a wooden horse.... and we had the three legged horse to prove it. LOL

Yes Tracey I've had a busy weekend crafting. My daughters formal is next week and she wants a new dress. Well she has seen a Collette Dinnigan .....Around $2000 Argh!
She wants me to copy it without a pattern :hmm:
Combining two patterns, I am having a go with some cheap material first.

And, I've finally started my Australian/Canadian wedding quilt. What a slacker! The newlyweds are already back in Oz and are returning to the US in the new year.
We are all so proud of my nephew as he will be playing the PGA tour next year playing with the likes of Tiger Woods no less. The Herald Sun did a write up on him last week. At my sister-in-laws birthday bash yesterday he was just the same old David playing with the kids and dishing up cheek with the rest of them.
I don't know if any of you are golfing fans but keep an eye out for David McKenzie....I used to change his nappy! :lmao:

MarthaB
11-13-2005, 11:38 AM
:) Hi Rosalie, My husband and son both love golf, they play a game of golf as much as they can, I tell hubbie to keep an eye out for David; WOW to play with Tiger Woods is a real honour. Hillary has a good sense of style, collette Dinnigan has beautiful dresses, but 2 grand for a dress is a bit steep isn't it?? well unless you're a movie star and can afford it, but she's a very lucky girl that she has a mother who can sew, and goes to so much trouble to make a beautiful dress, I don't think there are a lot of mothers who are willing or able to do that for one night. Is it the kind of dress she could wear again at another function?? Tamara only wore her formal dress once, and now it's just hanging here collecting dust for the last 5 years, maybe I should sell it, at least I get a few bucks for it.
I would really like to see a photo of Hillary in that dress when she has her formal.
martha

Rosalie
11-13-2005, 12:46 PM
Hillz sense of style is a bit "out there". We had a family gathering yesterday and there she was - pink and grey leopard skin print shirt, short skirt made from cut off jeans edged in hot pink lace, black with large pink spots knee high socks, scuffed black doc martin ankle boots(from the op shop) one with an orange lace, the other with a black and white scull and cross boned lace. You just gotta love it!

Last years formal dress also has only had one wear. Same thing...she had a dress in her head that she wanted to wear. We scoured Melbourne but couldn't come up with anything near it. So we had a go at making it. Turned out pretty good and there wasn't another one the formal.

I just tried to get a photo of last years up. Flickr say I've used my monthly upload limit. I thought there was mention of another site but I can't seem to find it.

Finally sorted out the webshots page. Here is a picture of Hilarys formal dress, with Hillz attached, from last year.
http://community.webshots.com/user/gypsyrose52
Tonight is her formal and the new dress just needs a few last stitches and voila!. She is so excited. This morning we put on the fake nails, then its the salon for hair and make up, photos at six at her friends house where they will be picked up in a double decker bus! Formal at Albert Park after which the bus picks them up again and on to the after party in Maribyrnong.
Lucky me gets to stay at home and pick them up sometime before 5am!
I just can't wait to see the rigmarole when she gets married!!!!

I hope all of you who are celebrating Thanksgiving have a wonderful day. It sounds like a lot of fun and food. What date is it exactly?

PS Just loaded photos from digital camera and found that Hillz had taken a shot of current dress. It is now on the link above.
The dresses skirt hasn't been attached at this stage. We were just getting an idea of how it would look.

Explain to me exactly what a "formal" is, please.

Rosalie
11-24-2005, 12:06 AM
A "formal" is an end of school year party which start in year 10. The students hire a venue and invite guests. They dress up in what used to be formal long gowns and the boys in dinner suits. However, these days they are more likely to wear cocktail dresses and the boys in ordinary suits or just neat casual.
I have some pictures which I will upload ASAP.

What do you call the end of school year dance?

PS Here we go.
http://community.webshots.com/user/gypsyrose52

The dress turned out pretty good. However, Hilarys hair is not what I would have chosen...but what would I know!
There is also a shot of the party bus as it left. Double decker filled with excited 17 and 18year olds and a reasonable amount of grog to boot. Hmmm...I gave her THE talk several times over...I can only hope that she was listening. I guess we'll know at about 3.30am tomorrow morning when I pick her up.

Thank you ladies for the complements. Hillz wore the green this year and got many comments on her appearance. I don't think my photos do her justice.
Fortunately my son went to pick up her and her friend Emma, who is staying over, from the after party at 4am. Bless his heart!
I still wasn't able to sleep until they were all home safely. There was a major thunder storm going on when he left to collect them.
So we all had tea and talked for an hour or so on how the whole shebang had gone. Sounds like they had a wondeful time..a great way tp start off the summer holidays!

Now Tracey let me see...I think a rainbow coloured little number would be appropriate for you! Do you have any particular style in mind?

Diana asked what a "formal" was and I've been thinking that it is probably akin to the American "prom". Would that be right?

Tigger, I still can't get my photos directly into the post so how on earth did you get the slideshow of your dogs? It is very impressive!

dg2901
11-24-2005, 06:37 PM
Thanks for the explanation for a formal. Here in the US the big dance/celebration is the Senior (12th grade) prom. Unless youre invited as a date, underclassmen arent allowed. Some high schools have a Junior prom (11th grade), though the same thing applies--if youre not a junior or invited as a date youre not allowed. Some schools also have a ring dance, though in this area (Southeastern Virginia) ring dances have pretty much faded away (ring dances are a dance/celebration of when the juniors get their class rings).

While we are on the subject of school, Diana, can you explain your education system. As I have said before, much of what we know about America is through films and TV and I have heard of junior and senior high.
Our education system varies from state to state here but still basically the same divisions. In Victoria, children usually go to kindergarten at around four. The main schooling starts with preps (preparatory grade) at five. Grade 1 to 6 is primary school and years 7 to 12, secondary.
Tertiary education is either onto university for a 3 or 4 year degree ( more for medical degrees) or students can enter other institutions for a diploma.

Its similar here in the states. Children can start pre-school around age 3-4(doesnt count as regular school.just kind of prepares the kid for being away from home and gives them structure). Children start school, kindergarten, at age 5. Grade's K-5 are considered elementary school. Grades 6-8 are middle/junior high school, though some states dont start junior high until 7th. Grades 9-12 are high school--9th=Freshman, 10th=Sophomore, 11th=Junior, 12th-Senior. After graduation from high school kids can continue on to junior college(s)-usually a 2 year degree (Associates Degree), can go to trade schools--these are generally 1-2 year programs, or can go on to a university-4 years college(s). From there education is basically endless meaning you can continue your post-grad education as you see fit--Masters degree/Doctorate degree. To get into college straight from graduating high school there is an application process and most colleges require atleast a C+ average and decent scores on the SAT test (Scholastic Aptitude Test..scores range from 200-1600+). To get into medical school student must maintain atleast a B average (forgot to mention our grading scale from best grade to worse is A, B, C, D, E, F, I (I=incomplete), and score highly on the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test).

Hope this helped with the understanding of the US school system..haha

Thanks Diana, I find it all very interesting as I am part American...well sort of.
Mt great grandfather was an American who emigrated to Australia. So that counts doesn't it.
I would love to find out a bit more about John Cutting but geneology always seem ssoooooooooooo daunting and I have no idea where to start. Any family members who could help have gone to god and I only know what I remember from stories my mum told me of her grandfather.
He was an unsung hero in Melbournes history. Being a diver, he was called out to a horrible accident when a tunnel collapsed. It was being built under Melbournes Yarra River. The story goes that he left his sickbed to try to save the trapped workers. Sadly, they were already dead when he got to them. He died of pneumonia as a consequence of his efforts.

:) My God you guys, seems like I missed a lot these last few days, anyway my son had his formal and I will put his formal pictures up here very soon, they turned out really good, I was only going to buy a few, but of course I ended up buying the whole lot.
looks like a nice turkey Diana, I'm looking forward to having some on Christmas day.
Rosalie, I didn't know you have a American background? It's sad that you can't find out anything about your family history, have you tried the web? maybe they have a site that you could try.
My daughters boyfriend of five years David has a american background too, his mum is American, but she got adopted out when she was little, and moved to Australia when she was very young.
Tracey I hope you are behaving yourself, LOL, only kidding hehe, that rainbow coloured dress rosalie mentioned sounds just right for you, again Cindy Lauper enters my mind LOL.

:woohoo: Great to see you back Martha. You have been missed. Can't wait to see Tims photos. You never know, like I said in my email, I reckon we have a connection here, we might end up inlaws? ;)
Did he ever ask a girl to go? Hillz didn't take a bloke just her girlfriend who had left the school.
Yep, Traceys dress is on the drawingboard. I'm just waiting till she comes for a fitting. Martha, you'd better come down to check it out when she arrives.

And you are right, I should try to find out more about my great-grandfather. :hmm: Now you're the great internet researcher Martha. I need your help.
Geneology is so daunting and it can be expensive getting birth and death records. I should get motivated. I like my American connection and get very annoyed when I hear people knocking the yanks(hope I'm not being offensive here!) Its just the POMS I can't stand! :biglaugh:

Now Diane, that's one yummy looking bird. Martha's and my invitation must have gotten lost in the mail! Next picture back up a bit. I like having a stickynose at whats going on in the background. I was trying to check out your kitchen but couldn't see much.

The background consists of a fifth of Skyy Vodka, an almost empty 5lb back of Nestle chocolate chips, and a coffee pot..haha..

Rosalie
12-04-2005, 10:35 AM
Does the Vodka come before or after the turkey?
Hmmm.. Turkey. vodka, chocolate and coffee...sounds great..still awaiting my invitation. It a bit far to go home so can I stay the night? Got any vegemite for me to have for breakfast?

dg2901
12-04-2005, 11:45 AM
haha..the vodka is for anytime..haha...i'm addicted (bad choice of wording) to white apple juice martinis...yum and more yum!..haha..i was going thru a fifth every 4 days there for a while...i had to put a halt to that..haha...so this particular bottle of vodka has been around for about a month and i dont think its even been opened (makes mental note to check on that).
and youre more than welcomed to come and enjoy some coffee, vodka, and while that turkey is long gone, i could always make another..hahaha...and of course you can stay the night..i dont have any extra bedrooms however the futon is quite comfy to sleep on.

Rosalie
12-04-2005, 11:49 AM
Excellent, I like sleeping on futons. A friend of mine in the bush has one and I sleep very well on it.
I have heard the expression a "fifth" but just how much is that? Most spirits here sell in bottles of 750mls. And I'm old enough to remember pints and gallons. So how much is it compared to a pint?

dg2901
12-04-2005, 12:37 PM
750mls is the same as a fifth
whats your mixed drink of choice?
I've also got some very tasty Starbucks coffee liqueur, tequila, brandy, irish cream, cacacha (from brazil), vanilla rum, sake, and beer....just let me know what you fancy

Rosalie

I knew you and I were going to get along.
Scotch is my preferred poison with water, ice, dry ginger, cola, or air is great with me. But most things that fit into a glass will do. Except for Oozo! phattooey! Hate the stuff.
OH yes and I have a little trouble with Bundaberg rum...short version? 24odd years ago my future brother-in-law introduced me to Bundy shots! The smell still brings back vivid and horrid memories...never been that drunk again...never will!
Friday I was out doing some chrissy shopping and came accross these 1 1/2 litre bottles of pina colata and mudslide mixers....just add the appropriate grog!
Hmmmm says I, think I need a couple of those!
The cocktail cabinet is looking quite well stocked these days - scotch, including some very expensive and wonderful 25yr old scotch hubby gave me for my birthday, brandy, gin, tia maria, khalua and baileys. Roll on Christmas and the New Year and the asprin!

dg2901
12-04-2005, 02:35 PM
I gotta ask, before I start doing my own online research, what exactly is Oozo?
I laughed out loud when I read that you will even take a scotch mixed with air?..hahaha!..hilarious!...do you pure air or will a little pollution mixed in do?..haha (I live near the shipyards and various high pollution areas..ick)..haha....have you cracked open the "just add your favorite mixer of choice" mixes yet?..
Oh, by the way, I ended up going into the kitchen and opening (yes, it wasnt opened yet) that bottle of vodka and made me an apple/peach/mango martini..i'm not half-baked, no thanks to you!..hehe

Rosalie
12-04-2005, 03:39 PM
Yes, any sort of air will do. The polluted stuff is a bit chewier than the pure but hey, I'm not one to get picky when it comes to grog.
Haven't gotten into the pina colatas or mudslides as yet. I thought of them for the Christmas break and if I open them now I'll just have to go back and buy more. Now that doesn't bother me but they might have run out.
It's 1.37pm here and just a little early for a drink, even for me, otherwise I might have joined you.
I've never had a martini.. how sad..think I shall just have to remedy that. What is your recipe? I also have some vermouth in the cupboard.

MarthaB
12-04-2005, 09:42 PM
:) Diana ouzo is a greek liquer, and it taste a bit like licorice, it's foul I don't like it either. Rosalie you never had Martini?? I did years ago, I got so drunk, and sick I have never forgotten it, and tequela oh my God I think I had a hangover for 3 days straight.
I don't like the smell of rum, my hubbie loves Bundy rum, that's okay as long as he doesn't breathe on me :biglaugh: to be honest he drinks just about everything that has alcohol in it, except wine.
I personally like gin, with Indian tonic, and a slice of lemon, exept the lemon is out now, and it's really good ice cold yum!

Thanks Martha, I forgot to answer Diane's question. I agree with you about the Ouzo! Blah!

I forgot about the wine too. I don't mind a drop of the grape stuff too. You'd think I was at the grog all the time... I like a drink occassionally...any occassion will do...Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday..

Oh my goodness... I miss all sorts of things when I am gone! I missed out on the booze discussion!!! ARGH!! I too love scotch, have liked it since I was a kid -- I'd sneek a taste from my dad's glass when he had a cocktail... I love BEER, lol. Good beery beer too, lol. Like Guinness, etc...yummy....

Ok, being a good little Greek girl, I suppose liking ouzo is genetic, I do like the stuff, but after a serious "episode" with Sambuca, haven't touched the stuff in ages... same goes for rum, and tequila. LOL. At the rate I was going, wasn't going to be many things left to drink..... (Ah young and stupid - know what I mean?) Now I really like gin and tonic, never used to before... oooh and a really girly drink -- Sloe Gin Fizzes, yummy!!!! Like a big Sweet Tart!! LOL!!!!

Ok, back to my water...... (oh and of course I was behaving -- kind of, was with mum-in-law and dad-in-law since last Thursday....)

Ouzo sounds similar to Jagermeister--a licorice-ishy thick liquor..ewwww!..i cant stand the stuff however my husband enjoys it. He mixes it with Red Bull...ack!
My "recipe" for martinis is 1.5 shots of vodka to 2 shots of mixer of choice. Add ice, shake well, strain into martini glass--drink up!..haha..The one I made last night was with an apple/peach/mango juice and it wasnt very good. I have to say that mixing it with white grape juice is the best.

Oh, i forgot to mention that I also have 5 bottles of wine waiting to be uncorked. I have a bottle of Ice Wine chilling at the moment so I guess that'll be opened in a little while. I bought the 2005 Beujolais Nuveau last week--havent tried it yet---has anyone here tried it?

Rosalie
12-05-2005, 03:32 PM
Ouzo isn't thick and not a liquor. Its a spirit..colourless and deadly!
I've heard of Ice wine there was something on the telly a while back about how its made. Sounds great.
We stick pretty much to the Australian wines. They are cheaper not having import duties on them. And might I add, they are mighty good...fair dinkum! Try some!

When you say "Mixer" of your choice, do you mean another spirit like vermouth?

dg2901
12-05-2005, 04:29 PM
Mixer meaning whatever juice, nectar, flavored beverage that you choose to mix the vodka with. For example I use some form of juice to mix with the vodka (last night i used the apple/peach/mango juice).

I've tried a couple of Australian Syrah/Siraz wines. They were pretty good. I'm not a big red wine drinker though. I like the sweeter wines.
haha, speaking of sweet, i just went an uncorked the Eisewien--talk about sweet!..whoa!........The ice wines are kind of on the pricey side due to that way the grapes are harvested. Thats the only type of wine I'll pay the hefty price tag for; most wines you'll find the cheaper priced are the better wines. The only other time I've splurged is for a bottle of Dom Perignon-we bought a bottle to take to my brothers house 3 years ago. I cant say it was worth the hefty price tag.

:) Diana, my husband likes Jagermeister as well, I don't like it, I believe it's german. I think I stick with Gin and tonic, and I like wine as well, I like this wine called seaview grand cuvee, it's not too sweet, and not too dry, and bubbly, yummy, and the price is good too, about $9.00 bucks a bottle. I also have tried more expensive bottles of wine, but I really cannot tell much difference, I think we just pay for the label, like everything else.

Nice pictures Martha, Tim looks like you! Hmmm..nice piercings? Come with your blessing or not?
Hillz did her own Ouch!

I'm with you on the seaview cuvee. Before we got old and grumpy, David and I religiously had a bottle of bubbly with fish and chips every friday night to celebrate the weekend. I think that how Campbell got here!

:) thanks Rosalie, no I didn't mind the earrings, the only one I objected to was the one he wanted near his temple, I thought that was too dangerous, so he got a tongue ring instead, you got good eye sight! I could hardly see the ones on the photo's I just posted,
I cannot believe Hillary did her own, that has got to hurt, tough cookie your girl.
Yes I like the seaview a bit too much sometimes, I really had to cut down, because I was drinking a bottle just about every day, it's so relaxing, every afternoon we would sit on the backdeck, have a couple of drinks, well that was my intention anyway, a couple of drinks would turn into the whole bottle.

Diana I think it is, I did google it, and it said various vineyards, South Australia, so it must be then.
You must try some if you can get it in the US, they have 3 kinds, seaview brut, which is a dry wine, and seaview grand cuvee, it's a blend between dry and sweet, I like that one the best, and then there is seaview sparkling shiraz, it's a sparkling red wine, with cherry and red licorice flavours.
Martha
