:) hi, I have gained a bit of weight since having bladderproblems, I can't really walk very far because I get so uncomfortable, also it gets so hot here during the day (australia) and walking at night is unsafe, so I was thinking of buying a treadmill, I do not really like any kind of exercise, but I always enjoyed walking, so I thought with a treadmill, I have the convenience of staying indoors out of the heat, and still control how much walking I want to or can do, did any of you lose any weight with a treadmill ?? I do not eat all that much, so I don't think I have to be on some kind of diet, it's just that with not much movement, my metabolism has really slowed down, and I want to do something about it, before it gets out of hand. thanks martha

I use the treadmill every day! AT first I went at a slow pace and normal incline. Nowadays I am able to increase the pace and incline comfortably for at least 1/2-3/4 of an hour. I have my T.V. in front of me so I don't get bored! With the cold weather coming here in New England, I rely on it for daily exercise. I hope it works for you. liz

Hi there,
Before you buy anything, any way you can try out different treadmills? Though it doesn't bother everyone, for some reason, the treadmill bothers my bladder. I am fine, though, on the elliptical trainer and on the rowing machine. Walking on land & yoga are also ok for me.

I sure hear you on the weight gain, I slammed on 30 pounds in one year of inactivity. I have, though, by watching what I eat & using the elliptical, rowing machine, walking & yoga, lost 12 pounds since June. 20 more to go!

I like Dr. Phil's weight loss book, it makes a lot of sense to me. Have you read it?

Wishing you success!

:) hi Kadi, no I have not read dr Phils weight loss book, I'm not sure if we can get it here in australia, but I will have a look, we can get Oprah's books here from her bookclub, so there is a good chance we can get dr Phil's book too, yes I could try to see if a treadmill would suit me, some of the larger stores here what sell fitness equipment usually have a lot of equipment for customers to use, it's like a' try before you buy thing' so I could get that checked out, I don't really want to spend a lot of money for something what is going to collect dust, thanks martha

The treadmill and exercise bike (recumbant) are the only two forms of exercise I can do. Twice I have tried to resume my step aerobics tapes and twice I have started the mother of all flares. These flares have both lasted about two weeks each and are painful. I have found that exercise flares are far worse then food flares. I have never flared from walking on the treadmill or riding the recumbant bike. Three years ago after saving for a year I bought a very expensive treadmill ($3,000.00) that is health club quality. I have had previous treadmills that were $750.00 or less and never lasted more then a year, this one is still going strong.

I haven't tried walking on a treadmill since I was diagnosed, but I do walk inside my house 5 days a week for 20 minutes each time. That works okay for me. I do it mostly for cardiac fitness, not weight loss, but I would think that it would help in weight loss as you decrease your food and fat intake. I have also ridden a stationary bike, but only temporarily for a knee problem. It was fine too. Praying that you find what works well for you. Blessings of hope and peace to you!

Before my IC problems I walked everywhere and ran. Now, oh my. Hard task. I'd just get going and I'd "have to go" or bladder spasams would start.

I know live out in the country and we have 50 acres of land. Going any distance became impossible for me. So my hubby made a "track" for me. It is 1/2 a mile. My parents live just beside us and it runs into their property as well. So I do as many laps as I can do and I have to "rest stations" when I need them. It is so great. Winter may be a different story. Would love to get a treadmill some day.

:) hi Jen, if I do get a stairmaster I think I will start very slow, and gradually build up, this morning after walking a fair bit around the house doing chores, I found I started to get uncomfortable, a bit of burning, especially in the groin and inner thigh, I was doing alright before I started the chores, so I just gave it break for a little while, the thing is I really need to exercise, I am putting on a little bit to much weight for my liking, clothes don't really look good, but anyway like I said I just start of slow, and see how I go, take care martha

I love the treadmill. It has been a life saver for me. If I am having a flare day, I don't go near it. If I am only semi flaring or having a good day, I get on it for as long as I can tolerate it (usually about 20-30 minutes). I go slow and I am fine with it. If you go fast or to fast for your bladder, you will know it right away. The important thing is to get moving somehow. I remember my trainer once saying (Used to have one but that was some time back) that the best thing you can buy is a good solid treadmill. Don't buy into the fads as they come and go but a treadmill is something just about everyone can use (Its better on your knees then many other types of equipment) and its easier for people to get on and use. I can't think of anything faster to help the weight come off. Eating to a point where you are starving is never good and it never works for long. Exercising not only lifts the spirit and makes you feel good, but I swear it gives you never you never had before. It boosts that alot. Good luck to you. :)

I bought a very good Proform. It is wonderful! It was delivered at no charge and has been excellent these past 4 years. I love it. I made payments on it for 12 months.

Hi Martha...

When I was a member of a gym I did the treadmill everyday. As the IC got worse I found I was running to the bathroom all the time, thus my workout wasn't effective at all. I was either in the bathroom on sitting down because of a spasam or something so eventually the doctors suggested I didn't go. Made since. I love to walk and my "track" helps alot. This way I can go at my own speed and if I need to stop for a potty I can. I've put on a few pounds last few months myself and dealing with it, no fun at all.

Hey Martha,
My parents have a set up where they have a treadmill in the extra room with a TV and DVD player as well as a fan. I used it while I was there this summer.

Hugs,
Barb :grouphug:
