I just got diagnosed with IC last week. I have been having the symptoms for at least a year but never knew what was wrong. I just got married in Aug and lost my virginity. It was the most painful thing Ihave ever experience and it hasnt gotten better.

It hurts when he is putting it in like hell. My doctor gave me something called Urelle today.

I was just wondering if anybody had any suggestions for me. This is something that really bothers me and makes me depressed. Because of pain i usually am scared to make love to my new husband!!

Please Help!!

There's a section in the Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook that should be helpful to you. One thing that can help is to use lots and lots of lubricant, even if you feel you don't need it. It can take lots of open communication and experimenting, but hopefully you'll be able to work this out.

My husband and I have always had this problem, too. I really can't offer much advice, as I haven't figured out a way to prevent the pain either. Some positions are less painful, but I wouldn't say pain free. It's wierd, though-some days are completely pain free and great, while other days are so painful, I hurt into the next day even after stopping before we've finished. I feel so bad for my husband sometimes! He always feels like it's his fault I am hurting, because its what he did that caused pain. I hope this gets better for you and your husband!

I am so sorry. I know exactly what you are talking about. It sounds like you have vulvodynia as well as IC. I suffer from this condition too. Unfortunately I have been dealing with this for over 4 years now. I use Lidocaine gel 2 % and KY Silk E to help with the pain, and we schedule our relations for those nights I think it might be okay...of course this takes most of the fun out of it...but it helps. As michaelsmommy said sometimes we have no problems and other times its awful, it doesn't make much sense. I think hormones play a role too b/c we can usually pick a week out of the month that things are better. I had a hysto last year but I still have my ovaries and supposedly they are working fine...although I do not have much of a sex drive anymore. I do not know if it b/c of my hormone levels or ifs its due to the pain facter.

You are so lucky you can use the lidocaine gel! I am allergic to lidocaine, so no help to me! I found that out when I had my first child, and they tried to use lidocaine to put in my IV, and then to numb me for stitches to repair a tear. Now I know to stay away from that stuff! I agree with you on the lube for sure though. We go through a lot of that!

It does sound like vulvodynia. I have VV in addition to IC. I'm also sensitive to latex, which can make things even worse if you are using condoms.

It can also be pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). This often goes along with IC and means that the pelvic muscles are not functioning properly; usually they are too tight. I have this, and what helps sometimes is to take a hot bath beforehand (bonus if hubby gets in with you) and to take a muscle relaxant before sex to relax the area. Also Donna is right, lots of lubricant does wonders. In addition, because I often have urethral pain after sex, I do a heparin/lidocaine/bicarb instill beforehand to numb the area a bit.

When your hubby is about to enter you, try to relax your pelvic muscles as much as possible. I know that's hard because you're afraid of pain, but try to do it .. it can really help ease penetration.
