how much would you take if you have used a catheter as a preventative?
1 tablet?

My doctor told me to take one tablet at night and one the next day - that is a preventative after intercourse but I imagine it would be similar dose for self cathing.

Mine gave me Macrobid for this purppose but I thought Cipro would be a better choice for this purpose. Anyone else given Macrobid instead of Cipro for having intercourse?

Thanks Janie :)
I just looked it up and it is the generic for Macrobid so I aguess I am in good company. Macrobid is actually my favorite antibiotic as it makes me feel a lot better then the others seem to do but I didn't know if it would be effective taken only once or twice for sex. It must be since we both got it prescribed by two different doctors. Works for me.

Sorry, I had a brain misfire there for a minute....my clue should have been that your post is under antibiotics! So sorry :)
I too was given macrobid to use after sex. I don't use it often now, but about a year ago I HAD to take it every single time.
Sorry I misunderstood you.
Hugs, Sandy

Hey Sandy, did it do the trick in just one dose? I don't know why my mind wants to believe only Cipro would be best for this but then again, I could be having brain fart here...lol....

It did seem to prevent infections then....at that time I was being hospitalized about every 1-2 months it seems for sex related infections...I'd give it a try :)
I take one 250mg Levaquin right after sex and it has been working for a year and a half now.

My doctor wanted me on the nitrofurantoin (macrobid) because she said that it was not as bad about causing yeast infections as some other antibiotics.

Oh wow Sandy. I felt so badly for you hearing that you had to be hospitalized for those infections...yikes. Sounds like you went to hell and back there :(
Thanks for telling me that Janie. Makes me feel better about taking the Macrobid (Yeast infections can seriously mess with IC).

There was a time that I was on Cipro prophylactically. One right before intercourse...or for those spontaneous moments.....right after! There wre times that I would take it the morning after too. After a while we swtiched to Bactrim which I believe the uro told me was less likely to cause yeast infections.
I was never given Macrobid or Macrodantin as a prophylactic antibiotic although when I had infections it was one of the only ones that worked to clear up infections. I had become resistant to a lot of the antibiotics for certain types of infections. the Nitrofurantoins are also less likely to cause yeast infections.
As far as the catheter........ I remember having in office cystos and the dr giving me one tablet of Levaquin.
I guess this just confuses you more. Through the years they've tried different antibiotics on me both prophylactically and for infection. I think as long as you take something that you don't react to....it would be a good idea to take something....especially if you are prone to infections...........whew.........a lot to take in! I hope things work out for you.
