I'm having my first cystoscopy on Friday, I'm a little nervous. My doc knows about IC, he has a few patients with it. He said it might hurt and that if it gets too unbearable he'll put me under. Has anyone here had to go under for it and is there any after affects?

I had cystoscopy in the office today so he could see what was causing my urethra pain. He then tried to see how much my bladder would hold - which wasn't much as I am currently irritated and inflammed.

I have also had cystoscopy with hydrodistention last Oct 2004 in which I was under general anethesia due to the pain of him trying to expand the bladder to check for pinpoint bleeding. This is how I was diagnosed with IC.

Either way I was irritated and sore - but manageable.

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for pain meds. If you are being checked for diagnosis of IC - I would recommend just going under general and letting them do a thorough investigation.

I had the cysto with hydro under anethseia in the hospital last week. I had a cysto in office about a year ago and they really couldn't see much. Iwas able to have in foccie cystos...years ago without pain or anesthesa but as my dsiease progressed the cystos became painful. They had to immeditaly give me painkillers.
I would take an ativan or something like that to relax and also a painkiller right bvefore the procedure!

Good luck...and let us know what he sees.

It helps if you can relax. If I concentrate on breathing and on relaxing, a cysto isn't horrible.

I have never had a cystoscopy in the doctor's office. I have just had the cysto with hydrodistention in the hospital under general anesthesia, which is how I was diagnosed with IC. Sorry I can't help much here, but I've heard that relaxing your pelvis and stomach can help with the in-office kind, and that the in-office cystos do not last very long, just a few minutes. Good luck :grouphug:

Hello, I've had a cysto done twice (once by my former uro and once by my current one) and was not put out on either occasion. Both doctors numbed my urethra with Zylocaine and proceeded with the cysto. For me a cysto is uncomfortable, but I just focused on pleasant thoughts and before I knew it, it was over.

it went well, thank you all for your support. I have the worse case of IC that my uro has seen in a while. I was put on Elmiron and the diet. Hopefully that will take some pain away. Thank you all again.
