Hi, ladies!

Help me, please, to understand about retention. How I can feel it, what are the symptoms. I use sometimes the Ditropann XL 5mg. in bed time. It seems to me that I void normal, but sometimes I need to push myself a little to void last urine. If it's what I'm thinking about, should I don't use this medicine anymore? It's really don't hard to push my urine a little and I feel my bladder empty after it. But I'm confuse. :bonk: I told to uro about it, he told if I will feel that I can not void when I need to do this, Dtropan is not good for this. If it is a little, I can continue to use this medicine.
And, it is very interesting about how many times the person normally should void. I know that normally it's 6-8 time per day and 1-2 time per night. What are IC symptoms about it. Can person who have IC hold the urine for long time. I mean 3-4 hours. I can feel that I want to void, but it is not a big problem to hold it for much longer as 3-4 hours. And should person void 2 cups of urine, as Donna wrote(it's how much urine our bladder can hold normally) all the time or sometimes less and sometimes more?
Thank you!

It's a good idea to look through the IC handbook for alot of your basic concerns http://www.ic-network.com/handbook/

Yep, antispasmotic drugs can cause retention. In that case you have 2 options (1)to discontinue the drug (2)to try self cathing for retention.
Pushing is not a good idea since it's bothersome to the IC bladder. You can try messaging your urethra opening, while urinating, to help you void.
Everyone with IC is different and IC in general can act differently at times so there is times when you wont have to void, as much, and times (during flares) when you will have to void a lot. I could be wrong, but I doubt anyone with IC could hold more than 400cc's without being in immense pain or/and peeing themselves ;)

Well one sign of retention is that you may still feel like you have to go about as bad as you did before you went. (although there are other causes for that symptom) It take you a while to be able to go (like quite a bit of concentration or effort)
You may want a different antispasmodic.
If you feel you have retention focus on relaxing your pelvic musscles...and excercise them at times. When you go try messaging your urethra. Don't push! There are just way to many problems with that...relax!
How much your bladder can hold is individual even amoung ICers. The less acidic your urine is the less the amount in your bladder will make you feel like you have to go.

Hi Oxana,
I'm new too, I just got diagnosed and just started Elmiron. I do not really have the frequency problem. I have the pressure like I have to go, but I am able to hold it and I know I don't have to go - especially if I just went. I have other symptoms too, like pain and burning and spasms sometimes

So anyway you can have IC and still be able to hold urine for a long time. I think there is a lot of variation in everyone's symptoms

By the way , your English is really good!

Please don't strain when you urinate. If you feel you are retaining a lot of urine, talk to your doctor so they can check on it. If you are only squeezing out a tiny bit, it could be that what you are straining to squeeze out is the urine that is constantly being sent to the bladder via the kidneys.
