9/22/05 UPDATE - THE BILL SUCCESSFULLY PASSED THROUGH THE SENATE! The final vote on the Ensign-Byrd amendment was 68-29 in favor of ending horse slaughter by withholding funds for federal inspectors in horse slaughterhouses and at the borders! The House of Representatives passed the same amendment in June voting overwhelmingly in support of the Sweeny-Spratt-Rahall-Whitfield amendment (269-158).

Yes!!!! - Jill :)

Many of you know that animal rights and protection are near and dear to my heart. I gave up my career in pharmacology because of animal abuse that I witnessed in drug labs. I'm just an animal lover of all sizes and shapes. One thing that really infuriates me is horse slaughter. Did you know that more than 60,000 horses a year are slaughtered for meat, which is then sent abroad. As a former horse owner, I'm appalled that we would do this.

Luckily, there is a new bill in the Senate which is going to be voted on TOMORROW!!!! Here's what you can do!

1. Call your Senator. Contact your two U.S. Senators NOW and ask them to support the Ensign-Byrd (pronounced "EN-SIN-BIRD") Agriculture Appropriations Amendment to ban horse slaughter. The Senate will vote on this as soon as this Tuesday (Sep 20)! See "Make the Call!" for information.

To reach your Senator, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at:
(202) 224-3121

Not sure what to say? It's simple! Here's a sample phone script for when you call:

"My name is [your name] and I'm calling from [your city and state]. I'm calling to urge Senator [your Senator's name] to vote YES on the upcoming Ensign-Byrd agriculture amendment to stop horse slaughter. Thank you."

I just called my Senators office... and it was a breeze!!!

Please help if you find this cause meaningful.

OMG Jill- I am heading out to make the call right now!! I have been just apalled also about what has happened to the animals in hurricane Katrina. I have donated money to just about every group that is there helping animals. Some people might say why help animals when people need help but animals SHOULD have just as many rights as we do, as they are also part of this world and an important part. Animals can't make decisions for themselves and usually can not defend themselves and as we humans destroy more and more of THEIR habitat, they have no where to go and will increasingly rely on us for everything. It is so sad,I can barely think about this subject without starting to cry.
Anyway ,thank you for bringing this to my attention!
Sarah

I was raised with a native american (well... with a swedish bent) approach to animals... and that every life has meaning and is important. That to take a life is very serious and shouldn't be taken lightly (except the occasional flea from my cats). When I think about the millions of animals eaten each day in this country, it makes me shiver. But, well, since I eat very little meat... that's my thing. Thanks for your support!

I was the same way with the Hurricane Katrina donations. I donated to HSUS, Houston SPCA and the United Animal Nations. Have to say that I'm most impressed with the latter one. They've got vets on the ground and doing daily diaries of their work. I wish I had done more with them!

Animal LOVER here TOO!!
I'm with you all the way with the support of animals of ALL kinds. That makes me cry too, to hear about what they are doing with those horses, and I just love the SPCA in all areas, for the job they do to protect our furry/feathered friends. We foster and adopt animals without homes.
It just totally breaks my heart when I see the abuse of any animal. There is NO REASON what so ever for this kind of action.
COUNT ME IN!
